Butrint, a Unesco World Heritage site.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony (800 BC), a Roman city (44 BC) and a bishopric (5th centrury). Following a period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, then a brief occupation by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The archaeological site is a repository of ruins representing each period in the city’s development and that entity is unique. Moreover the ruines are situated in a beautiful natural setting.
The photo shows the famous baptistery, a major ruin from the 6th century and an ancient Roman monument adapted to the cultural needs of Christianity. Its floor has a an exceptional and well-preserved mosaic pavement, but usually it’s covered with sand (for protection). #Culture #LocalSecrets #History

One of the over 700,000 bunkers built in Albania during the forty year leadership of Enver Hoxha.

This particular one is on the Vivari Channel close to Butrint National Park and is almost hidden now amongst the shrubs and pretty yellow wildflowers.
