The staff were very polite and helpful, they provided an outstanding service. The hotel was in a great location, just a five minute stroll to the metro station. The room was very nice, we would definitely go again and would recommend this place to all.

one minute to Piazza Bra

Hotel San Luca is beautifully located, just one minute off of the main tourist street, and adjacent to Piazza Bra. Our room was smallish, but nicely designed. Breakfast was excellent quality and with numerous choices.

will not recommend this hotel.

So firstly, the staff are pretty good, but thats where the good review ends. The room was ok size. The bathroom was awful & smelled like cigarettes. The TINY shower had mold & mildew throughout....very gross. The bed was so uncomfortable that by the second morning my hip on my left side was literally bruised. The air conditioner did not work so we had to keep the window & terrace door open all night which would have been fine except we were right above a street that was very noisy ONLY at night. The walls of the room were covered in stained fabric that also smelled much like the bathroom. There is a bus stop right on the side of the hotel but we never actually saw a bus stop there & had to walk about 15 minutes to get to the metro daily....mostly uphill.

Reasonably priced hotel in quiet location

Hotel Derby is about 10 min walk away from the Garbatella metro on line B, which means 3-4 stops from the centre of the tourist area. It's in a quiet mainly residential location near a couple of universities to the south of the city. It's not a top notch hotel but the prices reflect that. Some of the rooms and facilities such as showers are "compact" but we had a twin room which was perfectly adequate. What was best was the genuine helpfulness and good natures of the front-of-house staff in providing maps, information and advice. There are a few local eateries - pizza, pasta, mixture. If you don't mind a short commute to and for each day, and you don't need or want a top-of-the-line hotel and price, then this is as good as any in our opinion.

Although it's a bit off the beaten track (though not too far a walk from the subway), I was glad to be in a place in a part of Rome with more of a feel of the locals about it. I had a very warm welcome from staff, particularly one gentleman who was very helpful with all my questions on arrival. I was in a single which was fairly small but had the added bonus of a balcony which faced the setting sun so that was lovely after a day on my feet seeing the sights. The local pizzeria was very reasonably priced (10 euro for a very good large pizza and a half bottle of wine) with excellent food and friendly, attentive staff and clearly not a tourist spot as such.

You get what you pay for

The hotel isn't amazing but it is clean and a good price. To be honest I was really disappointed in my choice at first but then it grew on me by the end and I ended up having an enjoyable stay. It's not located in any of the central neighborhoods but it's very close to a metro station and so it's very easy to get around and see everything. There are very few restaurants within the hotel vicinity (so I always ate while I was out sightseeing before going back to the hotel for the night which worked out okay). If you are staying there alone make sure you request a room with a balcony. I did but I guess there was a mix up with my reservation and I originally got the most depressing closet-sized room (which I refused because I was staying there for 6 nights and they were able to give me a better room). Breakfast is very basic (if the hotel is reading this please invest in a toaster for breakfast, it would make a huge difference) but at least you can get a decent cappuccino. If I was travelling to Rome on a budget I would stay here again.

Exploring Rome

The best part of being at The Derby was all the help I got from Georgio! He spoke excellent English & was able to guide me on the places I wanted to see & how to get there. The rest of the staff was very friendly & helpful. There is a bus stop across the street /good restaurants close by/subway stop in walking distance.

People here are very nice, they are very helpful in a great neighborhood. Everybody is very helpful, with a great room, breakfast and environment. We will definitely comeback to this place. The price for the quality is very good. Very clean too.

Lovely, small hotel, older style yet up to date

We stayed here to be near friends. The hotel staff were wonderful. The breakfast is good- not fancy but good. The room was quite nice in a slightly older or more Roman style. The bathrooms were reasonable sized, if the shower was a bit on the small side (corner euro stall). The breakfast area plus outdoor patio is a plus. Rate to value ratio is very high on this hotel.

Great hotel in overrated city

Very good hotel! Nice relaxing neighborhood with several great restaurants around (which are rare to find in a tourist part of Rome), yet not too far from the historic center. Hotel staff is extremely nice and helpful.

Good hotel, friendly staff, but a bit far

I had a lovely stay at the Hotel Derby. The staff were incredibly friendly and eager to make my stay a pleasant one, offering directions and assistance wherever asked. The included breakfast was also quite nice and typical of most of the Italian hotels I've been too (good coffee, pastries and some cereals). The room was a good size and was quite clean and quiet at night. The age of the hotel shows through a bit and the room and bathroom could use a bit of an upgrade but nothing so major as to detract from the experience. My only gripe about this hotel is how far it was from the city of Rome itself. The address is firmly located in a suburb and is a 10 minute walk to the nearest metro station which you must take 3 stops to the Colosseum and then a further bus ride on to Piazza Navona etc. also about a 40 min journey to the Vatican from the hotel. Not as bad if like me you have plenty of time to explore Rome at a leisurely pace, but if you're trying to see a lot in a short period of time this hotel's location may prove to be a challenge. All in all a very lovely stay and I would recommend the hotel.

A great value hotel with excellent service.

The dark staff make this hotel a gem for the traveller. They are eager to help and clearly in love with their work. The hotel is reasonably priced in a neighbourhood 10 minutes from the subway which is four stops from the Coliseum, The rooms are well kept and maintained. The local neighbourhood has a wide choice of restaurants with moderate prices. The prices of the room were very reasonable for Rome.

Grazioso hotel senza troppi fronzoli

Camere un po' piccole, ma ben organizzate. C'è tutto quello che serve (cassetta di sicurezza, tv, asciugacapelli, doccia-shampoo). Camere abbastanza pulite. L'hotel è a 10 m da una buona trattoria tipica (Ar grottino der traslocatore) e a 300m dalla fermata metro B Garbatella
