The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
The view of Peniscola from the Villa Atalaya is truly breathtaking. The outdoor amenities were very nice and used extensively by our group with one big exception…..THE POOL. Because we were coming mid April, I had confirmed the pool was heated before we booked. During our stay the weather was cool at 17/18 Celsius. The pool was barely heated. We asked repeatedly to warm up the pool, but by the time we left it was colder than when we arrived. I was given conflicting answers that the temperature had been turned up, that it must not be working, and that’s as high as it goes. Our party of 13 was unable to enjoy one of the prime amenities of the Villa we were expecting to use. For a property advertised as a luxury property, the beds and linens were subpar. When we mentioned we could feel the springs from the mattresses, the owner sent pictures of a luxurious hotel mattress label implying these were at the villa. I took pictures of the mattress labels proving otherwise. Providing better mattresses and bedding would make for a better luxury experience. Overall the interiors were filled with cheap furniture and it felt like we were staying in a frat house. Our host Antonio’s wife did a lovely job of providing breakfast each morning, and he tried to navigate through the problems, but I suspect his hands were tied because of the owner. The villa seems to have solid bookings ahead, but if you are a discerning traveler seeking luxurious accommodations then think twice before booking.
