Unique in that the hotel is in a former prison and you see this all around the hotel. Superb hotel, never stayed in a Malmaison before and definitely will again. Staff go above & beyond just excellent & cannot fault it.

5* Prison experience

Fantastic place to stay!!!! Great staff but the fact it used to be a prison added a fun feel to the experience.

I had an absolutely unforgettable stay at Malmaison Oxford in Cell Room 128, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! This boutique hotel, set in a beautifully converted Victorian prison, blends historic charm with modern luxury in the most captivating way. Room 128, a cozy yet stylish space, was a perfect mix of quirky and comfortable. The original cell features, like the heavy door and stone walls, gave it a unique vibe, while the plush king-size bed, mood lighting, and sleek en-suite with a powerful shower made it feel indulgent. It was spotlessly clean, quiet, and the ideal retreat after exploring Oxford’s nearby sights. The highlight of my stay, though, was the bar experience, thanks to the incredibly talented mixologist, Sam. His creativity and passion for cocktails were unmatched! Sam crafted us some of the most delicious and inventive drinks from the extensive cocktail menu, each one a masterpiece. He was friendly, engaging, and took the time to chat about his craft, making the evening feel special. The staff were warm and attentive throughout. The hotel’s location in the Castle Quarter is unbeatable—steps from Oxford’s shops, and restaurants. My stay in Cell Room 128 was a perfect blend of history, luxury, and exceptional service, elevated by Sam’s mixology magic. Unique experience waking up in jail on my birthday......for me anyway!!! Five stars all the way.

One-of-a-kind hotel

Wonderful setting for a hotel. The room was comfortable and quiet and the staff was excellent. We had a very nice dinner in the restaurant that exceeded our expectations

Love this Hotel. Recommend getting a cell on 'A block' upper levels. There's something very cool about exiting your room onto the prison landing with all the cells lined up. Very nicely appointed rooms, a nice bar and restaurant. Breakfast was top notch. Town and station are minutes away on foot. Be sure to check out the original cell on the ground floor or visit the old jail museum next door.

First, the property is incredibly neat! Offering a cool hotel experience. The other positive is they are incredibly quick at responding to messages I had about getting logistics of my stay ( I had a car and needed to store my luggage as I had an early tour). Check in was sort of a disaster- the lady checked us in and had a room already ready which was great! But she handed me my room key and didn’t tell me where to go. This hotel is not laid out normally or intuitively. I had to ask two maids but still didn’t understand where to go. I had to walk back to the front deck and ask the lady to walk me where I needed to go. Also at check in- she quickly said I had breakfast and dinner included- had no clue I booked that. When my other party checked in later that day- the lady very kindly explained how the dinner worked and set us up. If that hadn’t happened, we probably would have never used it. If you are doing to stay here- just go ahead and upgrade. The AC only worked in the nice part. Our room was hot, which I’m fine with no AC but the windows don’t open- so it was rather stuffy. I’m glad my stay was only one night- if you want a short, unique experience- definitely consider this hotel. If you are staying longer- upgrade to the nicer room or choose another hotel. Just my opinion. The food was good- for both breakfast and dinner!

Top notch - can’t fault - a few petty niggles that aren’t worth mentioning, but otherwise make this place your relaxing home whilst in Oxford - so very family oriented too - we’re happy to return! M & M Scott

Nice and interesting hotel at a competitive cost - friendly staff - room was clean and smart but a bit warm and fan/air con didn’t work - breakfast display was good but not special (didn’t have any cooked options though so can’t comment on those) - I would go back but as I say, it didn’t feel as special as it could have done

Characterful Hotel in Perfect Sightseeing location

I stayed in room 116 and it was perfect for me. Very quiet, but spacious, in the "main body" of the hotel, close enough to reception and the restaurant. Some of the rooms are in offshoot extensions to the main building and just lack the same character. The downfall I would say to this hotel was the customer service and service at the bar. On both Friday and Saturday night it wasn't particularly busy, but generally there were only 1 or 2 people working on the bar at it's busiest time. The bar staff were very pleasant, but we were given a voucher for 3 cocktails (I verified this) on behalf of reception but the bar staff only allowed cheaper drinks, odd! They called reception but it was a change of staff since they provided the voucher. The voucher was given by the hotel as a friend had called up to get us drinks. 100% perfect location to explore the hotel.

The hotel was very comfortable and the staff without exception were very polite, welcoming, and extremely helpful. Our only disappointment was that the shower was very difficult to control. It was not possible to adequately blend hot and cold water, so that it was either scalding hot or icy cold. Surely there should be a mixer tap.

The Malmaison oxford is so far one of our best stays we have had in the uk! The hotel is a stunning renovation from a prison to a hotel that my now fiance just loved. The interior is stunning and classy with such helpful staff that took our car and parked it when we arrived, making us feel like Royalty. The Junior suite was breath taking with so much space, large bed, large tv, comfy and stylish seating and a large double shower to top it off. although we didn't eat in the hotel we did visit the bar and had a delicious salted caramel cocktail which was beyond amazing and deserves recognition. only tiniest downside is the entrance to the hotel that looked a lot like a pathway rather then a drive way to a hotel. which caused us to drive down a bus only lane on the first approach. other then that we had a fantastic time and wished we stayed longer to fully experience the hotel and everything oxford had to offer. we will be back next time!
