This hotel is outdated, doesn’t have well informed staff, foul smelling, and roach infested. Upon entering this hotel you will notice that it is blazing hot. We noticed the thermostat was set at 85 and even for late march where winter is still hanging on, that was way too hot. We reserved two rooms yet the front desk could only find one. After many frustrating minutes they miraculously found our second room. We go upstairs to our two, tiny, should be city view (but is not) rooms to find that one room smells absolutely disgusting, putrid even. So much so that we immediately go back to the front desk to ask for another room, and they obliged. One of rooms had stained bedding and a chunk of porcelain missing from the bathroom sink, neither room had good lighting and I could only assume that’s to disguise nasty things hiding and lurking around. We found a dead roach and a live roach crawling around in our room. This sent us over the edge and we immediately checked out but not before the front desk asked us to send our pictures of the roach to housekeeping. I’ve noticed in other reviews people mentioning roaches so I do not think this is an isolated incident nor do I think they are doing anything to mitigate the issue. Keep away from this hotel.

Many at front desk were rude and curt. Keenan was the one salvation who showed compassion. Rust was noticeable in rooms and suite had a long clanking bang from heater beginning at 3:am

This is an old hotel and it has the same problems most old NYC hotels have, but the staff is trying. First, my room was cold and the window couldn't shut. They gave me a space heater. That helped. Secondly, my window view looked out at hotel equipment and a high rise 20 ttaway.. No option there but to change rooms. Next, the bathroom was so small you had to be in it on top of the toilet to close the door. The safe security code in the room became invalid after a few days. Room service doesn't appreciate those who sleep late. They'll just skip your room, even if you take down your "Do Not Disturb" sign. The bottom line with this hotel: the best thing about it is location. Otherwise, it's a constant struggle with a staff that has seen your problems before and is trying to deal with it.

We had the best time at the Hotel Empire! The staff was extremely accommodating, welcoming and helpful. They also held our bags for hours until we could check in; big plus in our eyes! The rooms were excellent and the rooftop bar was an added bonus! Would stay again and highly recommend others giving it a try as well!

Rooms are terrible. The first room they put me in had paper thin walls and you could hear the weights of the elevators scraping up and down every time the elevator moved. The noise was so unbearable that I asked to move to another room. Room number two had the sound of a jackhammer outside the window. Apparently it is part of the heating system, some sort of motor or fan that is not working correctly and sounds like construction equipment, but the windows are paper thin, so it’s like somebody is doing construction in the room. I went down and they moved me to a third room, and this one, no jackhammer, but when the heating system was on, it was loud, there was some sort of banging sound from it, and the sound of water pressure building up and then releasing. Irregular and loud enough that it meant, I could not sleep. The only solution is to leave the heat on during the day, and then turn it totally off at night, so that there are no crazy noises coming from the machine and you can sleep. So I had four nights of terrible sleep. The walls are nicked, the carpet stained the bathroom old. The entire building is tired and rundown with the exception of the lobby and the rooftop bar both of which are OK. The rooms are cheap, which is good because they feel really, really cheap, which I guess makes sense. But it could be so much better than it is.

Classic NYC hotel. Weird rooms and hallways that confuse you. Every floor is another opportunity to take a selfie. Rooftop restaurant you can’t find. Great food, great people. Great NYC experience.

The rooms need some freshening up,, that’s for sure, especially the bathroom and shower. People have commented on how small the rooms are which is true but it’s NYC so not that surprising. This is a room to sleep and shower in and that’s it, not much space for more than that. The one real complaint is that it was ridiculously hot in the room. The heat was never on and I put the AC on a bunch of times, but if I left for a few hours and came back, it was hot again. Bottom line for the price it was fine to get some rest.
