First of all this hotel is in a great location, close to subway, walking distance to restaurants and shopping, clean and safe. The hotel itself is disappointing. We stayed 5 nights and witnessed at least 3 ppl not including us have complaints. They checked us in on floor 2 that first night, we immediately asked for a higher floor which was declined. The room was tiny, wallpaper peeling, floor carpet lifting, dark - no true window to let in sunlight. At around 5am the following morning there was a constant banging from the lower roof overlooking our room, not to mention the noise from the AC, the next morning the work started around 3am so of course another restless night. We complained, staff claimed no one else complaining but they offered resort fee discount (yes there is a resort fee - but pool was closed and rooftop was overhyped and overpriced). They moved us to floor 6, while we now had a window to let light in we felt were in a room with a jet engine - the AC was sooo loud you could not sleep even if you tried. The room had a phone with no buttons!, peeling wallpaper, a really battered chair and a bathroom that could barely fit one person. Empire Hotel needs to do better, replace or fix items. They have the potential but clearly not spending money on repairs, why are the fixtures rusting?! We could not wait to leave that room, such a disappointment to an otherwise great NYC trip. This hotel is not a 4 or 3 star, maybe in its heyday. Don’t waste your time or money here.

We had a bad room the first night but they got us a much better one the next without problem. Only thing was the air conditioner was very loud. Otherwise everything was smooth. Location can’t be beat. Staff very attentive.
