Nice apartment in a not-so-nice neighborhood
We loved the apartment, and going into Manhattan was quite easy using the train system at Mount Vernon East. Be careful though, this is NOT the same as the metro, you won't be able to use the capped weekly metro fee on your metrocard, so it ends up being a little expensive (8 to 12 dollars per person per one-way ticket, depending on the time of the day - off-peak vs peak hours). There is a metro station 25 minutes away, Wakefield, but it takes forever (20 stops) to get to Manhattan. So we took the train. But mostly, our biggest caveat is that the neighborhood is a bit sketchy, starting in the early evening. We arrived on a Sunday at 6pm and it honestly felt unsafe. And my husband and I backpacked in many places, so we're not sheltered or anything. But on that Sunday evening, walking 25 minutes from Wakefield (the metro station), we came across plenty of lunatics, some drug addicts, some random youths revving their motorcycle engines and circling the neighborhood, and several police cars with sirens blaring. It was bad enough that my 8 y.o felt really uncomfortable and had nightmares. The sidewalks are littered with random trash, although some streets are better than others. Now, during the day, it feels a-okay, but I definitely wouldn't walk this neighborhood alone past 6pm and wouldn't recommend being out at night at all.
