I love old historic hotels and the rooms are updated and nice. They hold firm to a 3:00 PM check in no matter what and the slightly surly receptionist didn’t make it any more enjoyable.

Very old and dirty hotel. The carpet was filthy and required socks at all times. The only real choice for parking was valet parking. When I checked in I asked if retrieval of car would be a problem at 4:30am and was told no problem but to call down to desk 10 minutes before I needed car. I called for 30 minutes and no answer, I went down to desk and no one was there. I rang bell on desk repeatedly and still nothing.......I was worried about missing my flight and turning in rental car. Finally at 4:50am a woman came out of the bathroom and went to go get my car........THIS IS NOT A HOTEL I COULD EVER RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.

It was a beautiful hotel, right in the heart of Monterey. Within walking distance to a lot of things to do as well. We stayed in a historic room, which was beautiful, with a great view of downtown Monterey!

It is a beautiful old world hotel.

The hotel is a wonderful example of early 1900 architecture located in downtown Monterey. It's location makes getting to every event easy. The staff was very kind and helpful.

Get Away

Pros: Location
Cons: Chair in the room
Very nice stay the room was older, but nice. It would have been nicer if it had at least one chair in it. Location was ideal as it was close to all of our needs.

Excellent Stay

Pros: Comfortable room
Cons: As mentioned above, more staff at breakfast would be helpful
Location: Close to Fisherman's wharf and Cannery Row. Both really within walking distance. We went to the 17 mile drive and spent some time in Big Sur.
The room was nice and comfortable. The staff was excellent. Parking was an issue, but the valet service was reasonable. One recommendation would be to double the staff for breakfast, particularly on weekends. Many people had to wait around for food.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review and rate us. We are so happy that you enjoyed the room, our location and the breakfast. Also, we are thrilled that you found our staff to be excellent and I will be sharing this with them. Thank you! Lastly, I will be addressing the additional staffing needs regarding breakfast with the supervisor today and ensure that this does not happen again. Our apologies if you or anyone else had to wait for food our drink during our breakfast. This is not acceptable and we will take care of it immediately. Thanks for your candid feedback and kind words, once again. Warm regards,

Good hotel stay marred by one problem.

Pros: Last century elegance.
Cons: Fix the elevator!
Location: Located downtown close to Fisherman's Warf and all those scrumptious restaurants. Not far to Cannery Row.
My wife is handicapped, and the elevator next to our room was out of service. There was a second elevator in an addition next to the original hotel, but there were two sets of stairs that had to be managed to use it. One set had a stair lift that had to be operated by hotel staff. The second set required toting her scooter up and down by hand. When I asked the hotel staff what they intended to do about the elevator, they said the owners did not intend to do anything. The fix was too expensive. It was a sad letdown for what was otherwise a very pleasant stay.

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry to hear that your stay was marred by the original elevator being unavailable for use. We are currently in the process of moving our main entrance to Calle Principal to ensure that those needing the elevator will be able to access it easily without the short flight of stairs. Unfortunately, until we are able to do so, we are making do with what we have available. The original elevator is unable to be fixed whatsoever, and has had its cables cut, as it does not meet modern standards in terms of size (it is very small). If you decide to come and visit again in the future, please let us know that way we may ensure we place you in the ADA accessible rooms nearer to the working elevator. Thank you again for staying with us!
