Romantic Home in Medieval Village Where 'Chocolat' was Filmed

Step back in time for a relaxing romantic retreat in an authentic medieval village unchanged for centuries. Situated in the Burgundy wine district, Flavigny Sur Ozerain was chosen as the site for the movie 'Chocolat' for it's old world charm and sense of timelessness. Previously an artist's loft, this barn has been converted into a simple yet surprisingly contemporary home, ancient on the exterior with all of the modern conveniences inside. Come stroll the quiet streets of the walled hilltop village, listen to the church bells mark the time, and experience a life before all of the hustle of today's rat race!

3 hours drive southeast of Paris(an hour and twenty minutes on the TGV!) and an hour northwest of Dijon, between Beaune and Chablis, this home can offer a serene escape or act as the perfect springboard to the delights of Burgundy and the Cote D'Or. With the Restaurant de L'Abbaye, La Grange, and the Creperie Les Ursulines right in town, one needn't leave the village's serenity, but with Alesia's ruins and fabulous restaurant Le Cheval Blanc, Semur en Auxois's vibrant medieval shopping district, the Abbaye Fontenay, and Saulieu nearby there are many temptations to explore.

Come explore the joy of life in the French countryside, and discover what you love most about this enchanting destination!

This hilltop warren of stone houses without any adjacent modern town is a step back in time. This home in the heart of it is ancient and modern at once. Steps from the bakery and two restaurants (reservations recommended) we enjoyed them all. Nearby towns offer many more. choices and the roman/Gaul site of Julius Caesar's victory subjugating Vercingatorix and all of Gaul in 54 BC. Alesia. You need a car but the driving is extraordinary in itself. Wonderful Hosts made us feel at home. Heartfelt thanks to them.

Le Cadeau Francais

We very much enjoyed our stay in this authentic and rustic cottage in Flavigny. There was everything there which we could possibly need for a comfortable holiday. Flavigny itself is a beautiful village full of charm. However, there is not a huge amount to do when the weather is cold and wet as it was for us. Rather limited too for dining out unless you travel further afield. Our hosts were very friendly and welcoming and we thank them so much for letting us spend a relaxing week in their cadeau français.

A frequent traveller this was easily one of the standout properties that I have ever stayed at. The location is wonderful and the home is picture perfect for some relaxation and a home base to tour the Bourgogne region. For food aficionados- the kitchen is well laid out and fully stocked with all that you need in hardware and service

Flavigny is a quaint medieval village, very quiet. The accommodation is as described, rustic charm.

The accommodation is very rustic and charming, beautiful garden and terrace to enjoy summer evenings. The owners did give us a pre warning that it may not be suitable for young kids (age 4) as there is an open loft and we need to watch the kids. So we didn’t leave them unsupervised. The kitchen is of high quality, very well stocked. The owners are very responsive to all questions and gave us detailed recommendations. It’s a bit tricky to drive to the property to offload bags with a bigger vehicle but we managed to park at a property nearby to do the packing and unpacking and then used the public parking lot to park our car which is 10 minutes away. Overall lovely stay, make sure to pack your mosquito spray in summer!

A Perfect Country Cottage

Flavigny is a delightful, small, quiet, picturesque place to spend a relaxing and introspective vacation with periodic sight seeing through sumptuous farm country where it appears almost anything is grown, including of course, the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grap. Our vacation cottage was cozy and comfortable with great light from lots of east/west windows, thick stone walls that kept the cottage cool from the hot summer sun, all the conveniences and amenities that a person would want, a cozy deck above a private garden to enjoy morning coffee or an evening apéritif, and lots of room to spread out with private spaces to enjoy moments of personal privacy for yoga, reading, drawing, etc.

Absolutely lovely

This is simply a beautiful house in a lovely village filled with friendly people. And I’m not exaggerating! We don’t speak French fluently but the Flavignons/Flavignettes (?) did not mind at all and with hands & feet as we say in Holland, communication worked just fine. We hope to return here in the future and stay a little longer than the first time. We feel lucky for finding it on this website! The Saunders family are very friendly and go out of their way in helping you from the other side of the planet, also they emailed us during our stay informing us of events in the village, really very kind! You will not be disappointed when you are lucky enough to book this property.

Drinks on the terrace and the kitchen make cooking an enjoyable experience. The town is very picturesque with great country walks. We had the most perfect stay and would love to return.

Perfection

The property matched the description but exceeded our expectations. It was more beautiful than the photos and more functional than the text described. We only wish we could have stayed longer. Can’t wait to go back. We fell in love with the town and this gift of a home. Don’t miss the local winery, Domaine Vignoble Flavigny-Anesia.

Charming quiet get away

The town is in a charming medieval town built around an abbey. The surrounding areas are all farms with the friendliest cows and horses you will ever encounter. The home is beautiful and large with all the modern amenities. If you are looking for a quiet getaway this is the place. It is very close to Beume and Dijon, and a lot of historic places to explore. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Wonderful stay in Flavigny

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Saunders' home in Flavigny. Their place was charming, well-equipped and very clean. The Saunders were also helpful in answering our questions and in suggesting good restaurants and places to visit. We loved having the experience of living in a medieval village in France and of having easy access to so many beautiful sights in the surrounding areas. Thanks for a great vacation in Burgundy!

Enchanting, Artistic and thoughtfully preserved and restored getaway

The house is located in a quiet medieval village. Its character and history are inspiring and beautiful. It has rustic charm with modern amenities. The photos can't depict the reality of the high vaulted ceilings and preserved ancient beam structure that awes you when entering the front door. My husband and I felt that the house was perfect for the two of us. We used it as a base camp to travel the nearby vineyards, countryside, neighboring villages and Chateaus. After a day of exploration we enjoyed returning to the tranquility of the house and garden. Restaurants in the immediate area are few. We either cooked our meals in or drove to nearby restaurants and the drives are magnificent. The owners are very conscientious of your well being while staying at their home and went out of their way to make sure we were happy and comfortable. We highly recommend this experience if you're looking for an adventure in a medieval village without roughing it.

Beautiful village and great history

We enjoyed the "quaintness" and village feel. Didn't expect the history of Caesar and the Gaul's or the nearby Abby. Plan for more time to explore the Burgundy region.

Lovely French home

This home is a lovely space for 2 people or 3 with a child. It is in a lovely French medieval town in the country side and has many visitors. Aside from walking around the quaint town there is really not much to do if you're looking for shops, restaurants, museums etc. Great if you're looking for time out from hectic travel. We took 2 trips - one to the Dijon area and one to Beaune. I was sick so it was the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. The owners were responsive at every turn. (Sorry about the keys!)The neighbors told us about the heart of the town and its people which made the place even more special.

Experience life in a small medieval French town

The stay at this apartment allows you the chance to live in the middle of a quaint town with all the amenities one might need. We had everything we needed regarding beds, shower supplies, cooking utensils, and recreation. Mary Kate was very responsive to our questions and needs, and very understanding. Renting from them was easy and worry free. Unique things about the property include large open spaces for relaxing, eating, and cooking. We never felt cramped. There is no tv, which is perfect in a small town like this. The upstairs shower is in the open, so not much privacy from friends and family who are upstairs, but there is also the downstairs full bath, which is all we needed. The kitchen has everything you could need, and the induction stovetop is amazing. Plenty of dishes, cooking ware, storage space, etc. There is the nearby Benedictine Abbey, where you can pray and attend mass with the monks. a few restaurants in town, beautiful views and paths around town, and nearby historical sites. Thank you very much, and I hope we can manage a visit again before leaving Europe for good.

Charming Home in Medieval French Village

Arriving late afternoon, we were at once welcomed by local villagers. This made an immediate impression on us as we settled in. The home is well-appointed and comfortable, and exudes old world charm. Every modern convenience blends with the beautiful rustic decor (inside and out). The home is in close proximity to fine dining, wine country, castles and bicycling the Burgundy canal among other activities. We can't wait to go back!

Beautiful vacation home in Flavigny sur Ozerain

We had a wonderful stay at Le Cadeau Francais in the heart of Flavigny sur Ozerain, a village that is even more attractive and charming than revealed by the many available photos. The house is simply beautiful, with rustic elements (exposed beams and stonework) combined with impressive original artwork and deft decorative touches. We spent one rainy day just reading and watching the fire in the fireplace/wood-stove (though we took a walk in the drizzle - the town is fabulous even on a rainy day) and it was great. If we ever get back to this area we'll definitely try to stay here again.

Beautiful Flavigney, convenient to explore

We really enjoyed our 3 week visit to Flavigney and the surrounding areas. The leaves were just changing, the weather was absolutely beautiful and the stay was memorable. There was plenty of room for the 3 of us to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and charm of the area and accommodations. The 3 restaurants in town were comfortable and served delicious food. A great place to walk and enjoy the charm of the village. There is a small grocery store in the village and a short drive into Semur there is a new large Intermarche for shopping. It is about an hours drive from Beaume and Dijon, in addition to other medieval villages that are well worth visiting. The property had a small washer and dryer for our use and was clean and well maintained.
