Disappointed in hotel condition.

Pros: The location was good, and the staff were great.
Cons: General condition.
Location: On Michigan Ave. We went to Shedd Aquarium, and double decker bus tour.
Elevators were in and out of service, vending machines were sparse and not all worked. Bathroom had exposed open ended piping, and bathroom door wouldn't close. The staff were attentive, courteous, and helpful.

Dirty,outdated,and they elevators weren't working

Overall bad experience and the staff didn't apologize or accommodate any of the visitors for the poor service and the elevators not working

Construction zone

I liked the mid-century style of the hotel even though it was run down. However, they are building a hi-rise condo that connects to the Essex hotel so beware of heavy construction noise and vibrations. If that wasn't bad enough the Hilton next door threw a block party with amplified sound for a convention. Drunken karoke blaring through our room on the 9th floor at 9:30 at night isn't my idea of a fun stay. We asked the Essex to change our room and they could not accommodate us even though they own several other properties in the area. The Essex plans to keep renting rooms through the construction so beware.

Soon to be torn down??

Pros: It was cheap and close to where friends were staying and places we wanted to see.

We were told they are building a new hotel next to this one. It seems that the staff is just waiting for that and letting the current one fall apart because it will be torn down. We don't know that for sure though.The shower drain was pluggged and then the pipes started leaking causing our floor to be very wet. We were told they would clean and dry it while we were gone. It was just as wet when we got back that evening 10 hours later. When we asked for towels to walk on we had to wait for 30 minutes then the next morning my shower was interrupted by staff telling me I had to stop immediately because it was leaking in the room below. The concierge was the nicest person there and very willing to help however possible. The rest of the staff seemed overworked and let us know it in how short and snippy they were with any question we asked.

Great location, reasonable value, limited amenitie

Pros: location
Cons: Rooms around the elevator should be a last resort - nobody wants that. Fold out couch could use a padded mattress cover or foam layer or something -
Location: museums and park
We needed a room with a fold out couch to accommodate our family of 5. Fold out couch was ridiculously uncomfortable - only the 6 year old was willing to give it a try. Our room cramped room somehow managed to wrap around the elevators so we listened to them go up and down all night long. The parking situation was unclear. The location of the hotel was great however, so if you are a family of 4 or less you can take advantage of this value so close to the museums and park. No onsite food options, so we had to venture out on foot in the cold for meals.

Very upset

Pros: The staff very nice and helpful. Room was clean.
Cons: Notify customer of any changes in motel This motel is an older motel. But appears they are adding a much larger section to it.
Location: Motel is close to all fun in a Chicago.
Stayed in this motel 2 years ago, was happy, came back. But Travelocity did not inform us it was under construction. The pool n bar was tore out. Had grandkids with us, had plans to use the pool that night. :( .very upsetting for our trip. Beware, and call n check with your motel for all facilities are up n running.

Nice location.

Pros: Its location and friendly staff.
Cons: The pool was not in service.
Location: Great location with parks, the lake, museums, good restaurants and shopping.
The Essex Inn is located on South Michigan Ave. thus within easy walking distance to the museums and the aquarium. The Bean and parks along Lake Shore Drive are also worth the time to experience. Thus as is in any real estate - location, location, location is the key. The staff at the Essex were excellent and very helpful. Parking in the area and at the hotel is very convenient. The room rates were very reasonable.

hotel staff horrible

We purchased a room with a king bed for one night and when we arrived at the hotel .. the front desk manager gave us our key to the room without greeting us nor looking at us in the face! We went upstairs to our room and it was a small bed so we go back to front desk and the guy tells us that that's the only room available. That they over booked and that was all they could offer us. We did get a $31.00 refund back for this issue but then we got charged $202.00 on our credit card. Absolutely absurd!
