The Graeber Summary:

Summary:
Downtown Austin | Historical 19th century Mansion | 4600 Sq. Ft. | Sleeps 12

Swim inside this architectural wonder. If you’ve been to 6th Street, you’ve probably walked right past this hidden gem without even knowing it. Don’t make that mistake again. Stay in this insane trailblazer of a mansion, that mixes 1880s stonewalls with 1960s renovations.

The Space:
If these walls could talk, they couldn’t tell you everyone who’s partied in this historic landmark, but they would tell you the story of how this place came to be. The first incarnation of this two-story stone structure was a popular 19th-century watering hole owned by an Irish immigrant. The Shamrock Saloon served the growing young city for many years while the Texas State Capitol was being built just a few blocks away. Architect, David Graeber bought 410 E 6th Street in 1968 as a run-down, falling in, a non-habitable shell of a structure. Graeber was not interested in restoring it back into a saloon though, he had a dream of a downtown, city-dwelling lifestyle for himself and his family.

In the late 70's, Graeber completed a strikingly modern interior adding clean, mod lines and numerous skylights to give the house a vibe connected to its downtown setting. Many of the interior spaces are just as he created them 4 decades ago. It is a time capsule with references to times and lives lived over 130 years in this one location.

Entering here, you see why the home and it’s a contemporary style of mid-1980s aesthetic was quickly dubbed, “time capsule mod.” We like to refer to it as Andy Warhol meets Davy Crockett. A picture window in the reading room is perfect for people watching the street scene outside. While floating bookshelves provide plenty of storage.

Fitting for an architect, the living room plays with interesting angles and details. Graeber built lollypop-shaped wall alcoves that extend to the second story. The red Elgin tile floors, artwork, mahogany staircase, and mahogany slats that rim the second floor pop against the white of the room’s white plaster over stone walls. Graeber built a rectangular fireplace alcove that wraps around multiple corners and reaches the Library.

Toward the back of the living room sits the first kitchen, which is U-shaped with a red glass tile backsplash, cream counters, and glass shelves that wrap around the room.

Upstairs in the master wing, we have two suites. Originally we suspect The Graeber used this suite as a sitting room with a fireplace set into a white brick wall, but we’ve added a bed for more sleeping space. The master suite looks down on Sixth Street a well-planned insulation and windows dim the sound of the street.

The master bathroom features a walk-in deep soaking tub with a shower. Black tiles and white-and-blue speckled tiles ring the tub. A large glass block window provides plenty of light and privacy from the second-story windows across Sixth Street. An L-shaped counter with a sink sits under an L-shaped mirror.

On the other side of the second floor, the guest suite looks out onto the pool area on one side and the living room on the other side. Shutters can be drawn for privacy.

The guest house and pool addition were added in 1985 which added 1,478 square feet. Graeber gave his imagination free reign in designing the addition. It includes an indoor swimming pool surrounded by travertine tile flooring. Above the pool area, is a suspended gourmet kitchen and dining area. Its rectangular shape giving way to a series of semicircles that form a dramatic balcony. Upstairs is a cozy living area and guest bedroom and full bath comfortably furnished with furniture to relax and sleep.

David Graeber said it best in an article about his family life at 410 E. 6th Street in The Austin American-Statesman: "Our life has been immeasurably enriched by living here." And when you stay here, your trip to Austin will be all the more unforgettable.

Wonderful

We had a blast staying at the Graeber! Such a unique experience. We walked around during the day and swam at night since the kids are too young for the nightlife. It was a wonderful way to give them an urban experience while feeling safe in the large fascinating home.

Great space

The house was really cool. And the bedding was really comfy. We had an issue with the dryer and the management company sent someone out to fix it right away. They were very responsive and communicative throughout the process. They clearly communicated the space was historic, eclectic, and amidst the loud and lively bars. We were not aware it was right around the corner from a homeless shelter that provided meals so there were some interesting and lively sights and sounds. All and all, everyone thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Awesome location, fun place

Great location right in the thick of dirty 6th and much more expansive than the listing pictures show made for a great spot for a bachelor's party. Don't count on going to bed early because the loud music from bars next door rattle the walls until 2am, but if you're staying here you're probably out at those bars anyway.

A+ location, unique space in the middle of Austin

The location is amazing - right in the middle of 6th street. Only word of caution is it's loud, but they do a great job of warning you of this before you finalize booking. If you're looking for a great spot right in the middle of it all, this is it. But you're right next door to bars and nightlife. Expect to stay up until they close and the music stops. Great spot for a large group to stay and enjoy Austin. We walked everywhere .

JUST RENT IT!!!!

I rented the house for my friends, family and I to celebrate my birthday and I can 100% say that words and even pictures will never do this place the right amount of justice. The house was ASTONISHING! The art and architecture were breathtaking! We had such an amazing time. The communication was also on point. Everyone who I spoke to was extremely nice and accommodating. I will be renting The Graeber House again very soon and HIGHLY recommend it! So worth it!

Unique place in the middle of the party!

This place is very cool as far as location and if you want to stay up all night partying and have a place to come that is a quick walk. It is loud...really loud so for partying this is the spot. For a quite nite of rest before 2am then you better pick another location. Great spaces and all the little things in the unit make it fun and easy. Love this place would stay again if we went to party all night!

Noisy to sleep but solvable!

The front door (internal- wood) does not close all of the way, so it feels unsafe and lets ALL of the noise in!

ATX Holiday

We spent a great week at The Graeber House in Downtown, Austin. Our kids had a great time playing in the pool. Everything we suspected about the house from the info posted online was correct. We were able to deal with the neighborhood noise at night. Something to consider if quiet sleep at night is a must for you. Our flight was canceled the morning of our departure. We were able to catch a different flight that put us in after midnight. Our contact at the Graeber made all the adjustments needed to get us in the house at that late hour. All communications throughout the week were quick and sealmless. We felt like we were well taken care of and for that we're very grateful. We hope to return to The Graeber.

Christmas at Graeber house

My 4 adult children and I had a wonderful time at this property.!! They were working from home, there was plenty of private spaces for them to take meetings and plenty of room to have fun. Although it was sometimes a bit noisy staying downtown was a great experience. The people at lodgewell were fabulous. They did everything to make our stay comfortable..

Unique Home Unique Location !

You will find nothing like this home in Austin, and we have a lot of cool places to stay! Located on "dirty 6th" you step outside into the Austin music and party scene. Inside is a tranquil space with beautiful art and incredible lighting from skylights. But it is loud. They warn you that it's loud. You sign off that it's loud--and they mean it. Besides the music from the neighboring bars, after closing time, Austin cleans up after itself... and has street cleaners (think leaf blowers) after the partiers leave. BUT - they provide ear plugs and you can sleep late to enjoy this incredible space. They have Sonos throughout home - you put on your own music in the evening and control via several speakers - it's awesome! communication was great - service was great! And for being right on 6th, I was worried passer byers would try to get in ... people don't even notice the gate (which has a coded locked). I had more people try to walk into a unique homefront in Alpine Tx, than we did down here. :-)
