What you can expect

Paddle through vast wetlands, encounter local wildlife, and investigate a well-preserved plantation during a day in Louisiana's countryside. After an adventurous kayaking tour of the pristine Manchac Swamp, delve into the troubled history of slavery on the Mississippi at the grand Whitney Plantation.

Catch up with your guide in the French Quarter, and then leave the hustle and bustle of NOLA behind for Louisiana's wild wetlands. Once you arrive at Manchac Swamp, you get a brief orientation before grabbing your paddle and gliding out into its still, peaceful waters. As you navigate dense cypress forests, your guide educates you about the unique ecosystem, and points out the alligators, birds, and small animals that call the swamp home.

Just when your stomach begins to rumble, head back to land to refuel with some local Cajun cuisine at your own expense. From here, you travel to the banks of the Mississippi River to the Whitney Plantation, a sprawling estate with a French Creole-style main house and rows of majestic oak trees.

As you explore the extensive grounds, peruse museum exhibits, memorial artwork, restored buildings, and first-person slave narratives that reveal the realities of life for the plantation's slave inhabitants. Afterward, take time to reflect on the history of slavery in the American South during the drive back to the city.
