What you can expect
Get to know Lithuania's second city with a day trip to see its historic cobbled alleys, grand Baroque churches, and the largest rivers in the country. Your time in Kaunas lets you explore the landmarks, see exquisite artifacts, and get a fresh appreciation for its collection of venerable sights.
After the ride across the countryside from your hotel, you get a look at the well-preserved Old Town as your assistant shows you the oldest stone castle in Lithuania. Kaunas Castle has stood by the banks of the Neris since the city's founding in the 14th century, and now hosts a museum where you can see a diverse collection of paintings, ceramics, and sculptures.
Not far away, you can see the tower of Kaunas Town Hall, called the “White Swan” thanks to its white walls and elegant spire. Visit the House of Perkunas, a former office for Hanseatic merchants known for its Gothic design, and then admire the Baroque architecture of the Pazaislis Monastery. The Ninth Fort museum, which contains collections of genocide and holocaust, executed during Soviet's and Hitler's occupation is also visited on this trip. Your assistant shares stories of the landmarks dating back to the city's medieval period through World War II and the decades of Soviet rule before you start the return trip to Vilnius.
