This tour of traditional Basque Country takes you through historic and artistic city of Elorrio, the medieval town of Oñati, and the Franciscan Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu. Along the way, learn about the incredible architecture and culture that surrounds the region.
Head out of Bilbao after pickup from your hotel, heading through the scenic Durango region toward Elorrio. Upon arriving in the town, which was founded in 1356, step out for a guided tour of its incredibly artistic buildings and architecture. Designated as a Center of Historical and Artistic Importance in 1964, Elorrio features 69 stone coats of arms embedded in its mansions' walls and an abundance of houses made of carved stonework.
From Elorrio, continue on to Oñati, a medieval village in the Gipuzkoa province. The town is home to a number of monuments, including the oldest university in Basque Country, the University of Oñati. While in the village, visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu, a Franciscan shrine located in the site where the Virgin of Arantzazu appeared to the shepherd Rodrigo de Balanzategui in 1468. Admire the incredible architecture of the place and learn of its history before heading back to Bilbao.
