What you can expect

Clamber up a high mountain pass in a rugged 4x4 vehicle during a guided tour to Sani Pass and the enclave of Lesotho. This full-day experience includes lunch along an alpine passage, a visit to a traditional Sotho village, and a chance to spot wildlife during the return journey to Durban.

Your tour begins with hotel pickup as the birds announce the break of day. From Durban, head west to the Drakensberg Escarpment, a formidable mountain range that marks the boundary between KwaZulu-Natal Province and the Kingdom of Lesotho. Along the way, your guide shares facts and figures about Lesotho, which achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1966.

By mid-morning, begin an alpine ascent in your off-road vehicle. Cruise a scenic byway to the town of Underberg at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment. Then, climb into the clouds on a drive along Sani Pass, which reaches an altitude of 9,429 feet (2,874 m) and features a long winding passage along a former mule track, where the mountains blaze with wildflowers in summer.

At the summit, see all the way into Lesotho, and then take time to savor a light lunch at a high-elevation pub before crossing the border and connecting with members of a Sotho mountain community. During the return to Durban, keep your eyes peeled for uncommon bird species like the bearded vulture and the orange-breasted rockjumper.
