What you can expect
The Kunsthalle Bremen is one of the oldest and most beautiful museums in Europe.
Founded as early as 1823, the Kunstverein in Bremen is still the private sponsor of the Kunsthalle Bremen to this day – which is unique in the German museum landscape. More than 10,000 members testify to its deep roots in the city and the region.
Under the title Remix, the Kunsthalle presents a varied overview of 700 years of art history: From the Italian Renaissance to the Dürer period and Dutch painting of the Golden Age, the spectrum extends to contemporary art with works such as “Pixelwald Wisera” by Pipilotti Rist. Historical works meet contemporary works, well-known artists meet unknown artists, and regionally and internationally significant works enter into a stimulating dialogue. Themed rooms deal with faith, war, nature, world trade, colonialism, and globalization – issues that have been affecting people for a long time. Works of art from six centuries reflect their unbroken relevance.
There is a special focus on the paintings of French and German Impressionism. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the Kunsthalle Bremen was one of the first German museums to champion the paintings of Manet, Monet, and van Gogh and also acquired numerous works by Liebermann, Corinth, and Slevogt.
Excellent works from the Worpswede artists' colony are just as strongly represented here as an outstanding collection of paintings by the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker. Other highlights include classical modernism with Expressionism and Max Beckmann.
The collection extends to the present day with impressive examples of Informel and the Zero movement. Media art plays a special role here: the Kunsthalle Bremen is known for its fascinating installations by John Cage, Nam June Paik, and James Turrell.
The Kupferstichkabinett (Copper Engraving Room) is an atmospheric Art Nouveau room. With over 200,000 sheets of hand drawings and prints, it houses one of the largest and most important collections in Europe. It covers the entire spectrum of art on paper: from watercolors by Dürer to Baroque drawings to extensive collections by Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, computer graphics, and Japanese woodcuts.
The Kunsthalle offers a varied program of exhibitions, in particular spectacular and highly acclaimed special exhibitions dedicated to important artists from Impressionism to the latest art production.
