Negative Neighborhood Experience
Let’s start with the positive aspects of our stay. It’s a beautiful remodeled space with comfy beds and full kitchen. It does feel a bit different since the building was formally used as a commercial space, so the kitchen and dining area sit in front of big windows that look out to the street and the main door is a glass door like the ones you see in commercial spaces. This space is also dog-friendly so we were able to bring our fur baby with us.
We were house hunting in other parts of Jacksonville, so we were not staying or exploring in the surrounding areas much. We would come back after dark and didn’t feel safe due to random guys just hanging outside. My husband asked them if they were staying in the building and they said no and weren’t very approachable.
In the day time you can observe that this neighborhood is on its way to be gentrified. I lived on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, so I have a point of reference. There are some houses that are completely abandoned and others that look like they’re falling apart. There are a handful of houses that have been remodeled.
We cut our stay short the day after we lost our dog for 6 hours. It was a nightmare. Not only is losing a pet heart wrenching, but looking for her in an area you’re not familiar with is even more stressful. During our search for our dog, we ended up in an area where there was a police car and we wanted them to know we were looking for our dog. The officer was more concerned with us being in the area and said it wasn’t safe and we should just go back. It was getting dark so we called it quits after that. I have to say it was a miracle that our dog actually came back to the place a few hours later and immediately we decided to leave.
We booked this place by how nice the photos looked. They only describe this area as ‘historical’ and it’s misleading because it’s a rough neighborhood. The worst part was that the owner did not refund the last night that we didn’t stay there. I reached out to let them know we left early because we didn’t feel safe in the neighborhood (I didn’t go into the stressful details of losing our dog). Their response was that our neighborhood experience was our opinion so they could not honor a refund. As a business owner myself, I would never charge a client for work that wasn’t rendered regardless of the circumstances. This is an overall experience, not just the living space. A refund was due for lack of representation of the area.
