It\u2019s that time of year again, there\u2019s a perfect nip in the air, decorations are up, and it\u2019s finally appropriate to watch our favorite holiday movies (that we may or may not watch year-round anyway). To help get us further in the spirit, we\u2019ve asked men\u2019s lifestyle and travel blogger Joe Miragliotta of JoesDaily.com to tell us about the exciting Christmas and holiday markets that can be found all across the country.<\/em><\/p>\n

I have to say, when I looked into just how long Christmas markets (or Christkindlsmarkts) had been around, I was pretty shocked. As it turns out, the first appeared in Germany over 400 years ago, with winter markets dating back significantly further. While taking a tour of the markets in Germany\u2014honestly, Europe in general\u2014is high up on my bucket list, I\u2019m realistic enough to know that\u2019s not something that will be happening soon. That said, I also don\u2019t plan on waiting until that happens to experience that special magic. Thankfully, it turns out there are actually plenty of options scattered around our own country. Check out the list below to see if there\u2019s one near you!<\/p>\n

1. Christkindlmarket – Chicago, IL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\"Chicago\n

If you\u2019re going to be in the Chicago<\/a> area between November 16th and December 24th this year, the Christkindlmarket<\/a> is where you want to be. With locations in the Loop, Wrigleyville, and even Naperville, you have your options in the way of convenience. Depending on which you find yourself at, expect to see dozens of vendors offering everything from handblown ornaments and cuckoo clocks to strudel and Gl\u00fcwein. For those venturing to Daley Plaza on Sundays between 2-4 p.m., you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of their very own Christkind, a \u201cfairy-like being dressed in gold and white robes with a crown upon her golden locks\u201d\u2014the giver of gifts in most German-speaking countries.<\/p>\n

2. Christkindlmarkt – Bethlehem, PA<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Unsurprisingly, one of the best and biggest markets in the country is located in a town called Bethlehem<\/a>. Those from the Keystone State are surely already familiar with the extravaganza that is the Christkindlmarkt<\/a> but, for those of us outside of Pennyslvania, know that it\u2019s amazing enough to earn the town the nickname of \u201cChristmas City.\u201d In addition to goods from over 150 incredible artisans from all over the nation, visitors can also look forward to live Christmas music, ice carving, and glassblowing demonstrations. If you\u2019re looking for a little something extra, you can even have breakfast with St. Nicholas, pending the purchase of an additional ticket. The market runs through the weekend before Christmas, so you still have plenty of time to plan your trip and snag some unique gifts and experiences from one of the most exciting Christkindlmarkts around!<\/p>\n

Dates: Weekends (and Thursdays in Dec) November 16th – December 23rd
\nLocation: E 1st St, Bethlehem, PA 18015
\nAdmission: ~$10 for adults and ~$6 for children<\/p>\n

3. Downtown Holiday Market, Washington DC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\"Downtown\n

For a more Americanized\u2014but still completely awesome\u2014take, there\u2019s the Downtown Holiday Market<\/a> in Washington DC<\/a>. Art, clothing, sweets, and antiques are just a small sample of the variety of wares that can be found there. While this market happens to be open every day of the week, exhibitors\u2019 participation varies. So, if you had a special one in mind, be sure to check ahead of time to confirm they\u2019ll be there. Of course, should you get your wires crossed, there\u2019s always the Smithsonian right behind you (also, all of the other spectacular shops). You really can\u2019t lose.<\/p>\n

Dates: November 23rd – December 23rd
\nLocation: Downtown Washington DC (F Street sidewalk in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum & National Portrait Gallery)
\nAdmission: Free<\/p>\n

4. Christkindlmarkt – Denver, CO
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n\"Denver\n

While the Denver Christkindlmarkt<\/a> isn\u2019t the biggest around, it still has plenty to offer in the way of winter holiday vibes. Live, traditional music (with dancing encouraged!) can be found every day throughout its run. When you get hungry, Central and Eastern European drink and fare, from schnapps to Kn\u00f6del, are basically everywhere you turn. And, as for shopping, between textiles from Tibet and Ecuador, nutcrackers and nesting dolls from Germany and Ukraine (respectively), and Christmas trees and handblown ornaments from right around the corner, you basically have the world within arms reach. The Denver<\/a> Christkindlmarkt runs every day of the week from mid-November through the weekend before Christmas.<\/p>\n

5. Columbus Circle Holiday Market – New York, NY
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n\"Urbanspace\n

While the fantastic shop windows can be plenty of reason to visit New York<\/a> during December all on their own, anyone not making their way to the Columbus Circle Holiday Market<\/a> immediately after they\u2019ve taken a gander is certainly doing themselves a disservice.  Similar to the one in DC, this market hosts over 150 vendors of the more modern variety. Still, there\u2019s plenty of traditional food to be had. So you can grab yourself a li\u00e8ge waffle and happily get all of your holiday shopping done in one place. Assuming you can still easily walk around when you\u2019re finished, why not take advantage of your locale and go for a stroll around Central Park? Of course, if you can only make it to a bench, those are definitely nice too.<\/p>\n

Dates: November 28th – December 24th
\nLocation: Columbus Circle, 59th Street and Central Park West
\nAdmission: Free<\/p>\n

6. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair – San Francisco, CA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\"Great\n

Making their mark on the Christmas market scene is The Great Dickens Christmas Fair<\/a> in San Francisco<\/a>. Instead of pulling their inspiration from the classic German roots, they take you back to the enchanting atmosphere of Victorian London. While $30 for admission might seem a bit steep compared to others on this list, keep in mind that there\u2019s an entire fair included with this market. From bustled gowns to pewter cups, every shop is chockfull of what one might expect to find while walking the streets of nineteenth-century Britain. Lovers of English food will be happy to know the staples\u2014like roasted chestnuts, tea and scones, bangers and mash, and meat pies\u2014are all readily available. Anyone wanting to take a more passive approach to their experience won\u2019t be disappointed either. Their variety of shows range from musical numbers and Scottish & Irish dancers to scenes from Dickens\u2019 A Christmas Carol and cancan performances. They might be one of the only ones around doing the Victorian thing, but they\u2019re certainly doing it right.<\/p>\n

Dates: Weekends November 17th – December 23rd
\nLocation: Cow Palace Exhibition Halls, San Francisco
\nAdmission: $30 for adults, $14 kids 5-12, kids 5 and under free<\/p>\n

7. Helen, GA<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If a temporary conglomeration of booths isn\u2019t quite enough to scratch need-to-get-to-Europe itch, how does an entire Bavarian-style town right here in the US sound? Lucky for you, that\u2019s exactly what you\u2019ll find in Helen<\/a>, Georgia. Cobblestone streets, gorgeous arched bridges, Gothic half-timbered buildings, and even a windmill make up the town of less than 600. While they do host a Christkindlmarkt during the first two weekends of December, they have plenty of other things going on that month that are sure to fill you with the Christmas spirit.
