I\u2019m getting a jump-start on my New Year\u2019s Resolutions (specifically the ones about traveling more and worrying less) and heading to West Virginia for a few days of beautiful scenery, local charm, and of course, snow!<\/p>\n<p>My plan is to take in as much of the above as I possibly can, so I\u2019ve started an itinerary to help me experience as much of West Virginia as possible during my stay. Check out where I\u2019m headed, and if you have suggestions, I\u2019d love to hear them in the comments below. Of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/Destinations-In-West-Virginia.d250.Hotel-Destinations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can always plan to join me<\/a> if you\u2019re up for some fun in the winter wonderland of West Virginia!<\/p>\n<h2>January 9 &#8211; Charleston, West Virginia:<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WV-Roaming-Gnome-Itinerary-Images_Rotunda.jpg\" alt=\"Capitol Rotunda - Charleston, West Virginia\" width=\"1280\" height=\"768\" \/>\n<p>When I land in Charleston, I\u2019m heading straight for some of the most iconic visitor destinations before I venture onwards in the evening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ll head to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theclaycenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Clay Center<\/a> to check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theclaycenter.org\/discovery-museum\/exhibits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyTown<\/a> exhibit that opened in November. Here, I\u2019ll get a gnome-sized overview of the city of Charleston before I continue my exploration of the city.<\/li>\n<li>Once I\u2019ve gotten my bearings, I\u2019ll wander over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainstage.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mountain Stage<\/a> to meet up with my old friend, Larry Groce, and hear some local tunes.<\/li>\n<li>By now, surely I\u2019ll be ready for a bite to eat, so I\u2019ll head to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitolmarket.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capitol Market<\/a> to sample the local flavors.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m planning to finish out my day in Charleston with a stop at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvculture.org\/agency\/capitol.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capitol building<\/a>, to snap a few pics of that gorgeous, gilded rotunda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>January 10 &#8211; Glade Springs area, West Virginia:<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WV-Roaming-Gnome-Itinerary-Images_Winterplace.jpg\" alt=\"Winterplace, West Virginia\" width=\"1280\" height=\"768\" \/>\n<p>After a refreshing night\u2019s sleep in Glade Springs, I have an action-packed day planned:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m heading out for my first taste of fresh powder with some tubing at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winterplace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winterplace<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>After my time outdoors, I\u2019m thinking I\u2019ll enjoy warming up at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamarackwv.com\/what-we-are\/experience-tamarack.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tamarack<\/a>, and watch the artisan glass blowers work.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll get a bit more exercise (indoors, this time!) with a bit of rock climbing at the <a href=\"http:\/\/outsideingym.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outside In Gym<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>With all of the athletic activity, I\u2019m going to take a break to relax and recharge at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gladesprings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glade Springs Spa Orange<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Fully refreshed, I\u2019ll round out my day with dinner and a visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/weatheredgroundbrewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Weathered Ground Brewery<\/a> to replenish the calories I burned with some of the liquid variety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>January 11 &#8211; Lewisburg and Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia:<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WV-Roaming-Gnome-Itinerary-Images_SnowshoeMountain.jpg\" alt=\"Snowshoe Mountain Resort, West Virginia\" width=\"1280\" height=\"768\" \/>\n<p>I\u2019ll be setting off early this morning, as I\u2019ve planned quite a few activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First stop will be some snowshoeing at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/mnf\/recarea\/?recid=9913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cranberry Glades<\/a> Botanical Area.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m sure I will have worked up quite an appetite, so I\u2019ve planned to stop for a meal at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elkriverinnandrestaurant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Restaurant at Elk River Inn<\/a>. It came highly recommended, so I\u2019m going to be sure to come hungry!<\/li>\n<li>The rest of the afternoon will be spent at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. I\u2019ll start with a dip in the heated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowshoemtn.com\/things-to-do\/activities\/split-rock-pools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Split Rock Pool<\/a>, then head out for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snowshoemtn.com\/things-to-do\/activities\/snowmobile-tours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">snowmobiling<\/a> and maybe finish the day with some snowboarding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>January 12 &#8211; Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls, West Virginia:<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15849\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WV-Roaming-Gnome-Itinerary-Images_BlackwaterFalls.jpg\" alt=\"Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia\" width=\"1280\" height=\"768\" \/>\n<p>I\u2019m planning for another beautiful day spent outdoors, since there\u2019s no shortage of ways to experience winter in West Virginia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A nice, peaceful <a href=\"http:\/\/canaanresort.com\/winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ice skating<\/a> session at Canaan Valley Resort State Park to kick off my adventures!<\/li>\n<li>Next, I\u2019ll spend some time hiking in the backcountry of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timberlineresort.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timberline Resort<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll head to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackwaterfalls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blackwater Falls State Park<\/a> \u2013 I hear it\u2019s the absolute best place to do some sledding!<\/li>\n<li>Planning on finishing out the day at <a href=\"http:\/\/whitegrass.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Grass<\/a> with some skiing, and my personal favorite part of skiing, apr\u00e8s-ski!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>January 13 &#8211; Shepherdstown and Lost River, West Virginia:<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/WV-Roaming-Gnome-Itinerary-Images_ShepherdstownHistoric.jpg\" alt=\"Shepherdstown Historic District - Shepherdstown, West Virginia\" width=\"1280\" height=\"768\" \/>\n<p>After all the excitement of the last few days, I\u2019m planning on taking my last day in West Virginia at a slightly more relaxed pace:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First up \u2013 a visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/shepherdstown.info\/eat\/press-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Press Room<\/a> for some signature nibbles and drinks.<\/li>\n<li>Next, a tour of some of the local landmarks, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guesthouselostriver.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guest House Lost River,<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/historicshepherdstown.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shepherdstown Historic District<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stirrup-queens.com\/2010\/02\/little-house-on-the-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little House<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019m thinking I\u2019ll grab something to eat (and drink!) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lostriverbrewing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lost River Brewing<\/a> sometime before I head to the airport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy New Year, my friends!
