And let\u2019s be honest, I think you\u2019d be hard pressed to find a single thing not to love about the area. The warm turquoise waters and pristine beaches, the friendly and welcoming culture, the unassuming luxury and abundance of coconut drinks\u2026 Sorry, what was I saying?<\/p>\n<p>Oh yes \u2013 the Riviera Maya is truly one of my all-time favorite destinations, and I\u2019ll be headed back December 19 \u2013 22 to spend a few days soaking up the sunshine. (Happy holidays to me, indeed!) I\u2019ll be sharing my travels via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/roaminggnome\">Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/roaminggnome\">Instagram<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/Riviera-Maya-Hotels-Barcelo-Maya-Tropical-All-Inclusive.h1348114.Hotel-Information\">you could always join me<\/a>, if you\u2019re so inclined!<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145457\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0001_iStock-477939949.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145457\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0001_iStock-477939949.jpg\" alt=\"A Winter Getaway with the Roaming Gnome - Mayan Ruins\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a>\n<p>I\u2019m headed to the Barcel\u00f3 Maya Grand Resort, which is actually a beautiful complex made up of five distinct properties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Barcel\u00f3 Maya Palace<\/li>\n<li>Barcel\u00f3 Maya Tropical<\/li>\n<li>Barcel\u00f3 Maya Colonial<\/li>\n<li>Barcel\u00f3 Maya Caribe<\/li>\n<li>Barcel\u00f3 Maya Beach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While I\u2019m in the Riviera Maya, I also plan to visit the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/Riviera-Maya-Hotels-Occidental-At-Xcaret-Destination-All-Inclusive.h882765.Hotel-Information\"> Occidental at Xcaret Destination All-Inclusive in Playa del Carmen<\/a>, just to keep things interesting. I\u2019ve planned out my itinerary by day, but I would love to hear your recommendations for my visit \u2013 you can share them in the comments below!<\/p>\n<h2>December 19<\/h2>\n<p>After taking an evening flight on the 18th, I plan on and turning in fairly quickly so I\u2019ll be well rested for the intense relaxation I\u2019ll be enjoying. After a leisurely breakfast at whichever of the many on-property restaurants catches my fancy, I\u2019ll be off!<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145504\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0004_iStock-106578494.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18528 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145504\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0004_iStock-106578494.jpg\" alt=\"A Winter Getaway with the Roaming Gnome - Beach Scene\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ll start this trip off right with a trip to the beach \u2013 sun, sand, and tropical drink in hand!<br \/>\nAfter lunch, I\u2019ll spend the early afternoon sunbathing in the private pool attached to my Swim-Up Premium Suite.<\/li>\n<li>Thoroughly rested, I\u2019ll hit the beach for some volleyball, then make some new friends with a fun round of bowling.<\/li>\n<li>Before dinner \u2013 I\u2019ll take a peek at the resort mall and gift shops \u2013 I hear the B-Fashion Store has everything I might need to get dressed up for a night on the town.<\/li>\n<li>Dinner at Tokyo Restaurant \u2013 with world-class cuisine everywhere you turn, this was a tough pick, but this spot came very highly recommended!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>December 20<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ll be up early again to explore the property and the many attractions it offers, including:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145502\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0003_iStock-184854261.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145502\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0003_iStock-184854261.jpg\" alt=\"A Winter Getaway with the Roaming Gnome - Resort Pool\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Pirate\u2019s Island Water Park to try my hand at surfing! I can\u2019t say that hanging ten is my strongest suit, but I\u2019m willing to give it a shot. In the event that catching a wave isn\u2019t in the cards \u2013 I\u2019ll catch a ride down one of the many waterslides.<\/li>\n<li>Spa for a dip in the hydrotherapy circuit, then get my heart pumping with an afternoon workout at the fitness center.<\/li>\n<li>Massage by the adults-only pool at Barcelo Maya Palace.<\/li>\n<li>Attending a wedding at Playa Azul. Now that\u2019s the way to get hitched \u2013 if I ever were to find a wanderer as wise and adventurous as myself, you can bet we\u2019d tie the knot here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>December 21<\/h2>\n<p>After the wedding festivities (I can\u2019t help but overdo it with one too many rounds of the Cha Cha Slide) I\u2019m planning on taking it pretty easy today:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145454\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0000_iStock-513583096.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18524 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145454\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0000_iStock-513583096.jpg\" alt=\"A Winter Getaway with the Roaming Gnome - Iguana at the Mayan Ruins in the Riviera Maya\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>First up \u2013 a visit to the Beach Club for a dip in the ocean-view, adults-only pool, followed by a snooze in a hamaca over the white sand of the cove. (Obviously, I\u2019ll want to pace myself &#8211; no sense in wearing myself out!)<\/li>\n<li>I think I\u2019ll order room service while I relax, enjoy the view from my room, and rest before the afternoon\u2019s activities.<\/li>\n<li>Getting some fresh air and exercise in the afternoon with at least 9 holes of golf at the perfectly-sized mini golf course.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll head out for an invigorating hike to explore the Mayan Ruins &#8211; there&#8217;s a splendid view of the ocean for those who trek to the top!<\/li>\n<li>When I return to the property, I\u2019ll swing by the playground for a spell \u2013 you never know when the urge to conquer a slide will strike.<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ll grab a casual dinner at the SportBar, before I head to the Maya Show \u2013 where I hear they\u2019ve got a special welcome ceremony planned!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>December 22<\/h2>\n<p>For my final day here in paradise, I\u2019ll be up early again to experience all I can before I head off on my next adventure. Today, I\u2019ll take the Trajinera Ride to Xcaret Park, at the Occidental at Xcaret Destination All-Inclusive in Playa del Carmen.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145500\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0002_iStock-476879912.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18526\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20161213145500\/RG-Barcelo-Images-_0002_iStock-476879912.jpg\" alt=\"A Winter Getaway with the Roaming Gnome - The Monkey Area\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ll hit up the Flamencos Pool jacuzzi to start my day at Xcaret Park, followed by lunch at the Snack Restaurant.<\/li>\n<li>Check out the view from the balcony in a Deluxe Room, then monkey about with the local wildlife in the Monkey Area.<\/li>\n<li>One more quick gym session to work off some of the world-class cuisine I\u2019ve treated myself too (as they say, balance in all things!)<\/li>\n<li>A last celebratory beverage to cap off a wonderful vacation before I check out in the afternoon and head to the airport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope my little getaway will inspire you to wander off to your own paradise sometime this winter.
