It is now known for design, innovation, and for being one of Europe&#8217;s &#8220;greenest&#8221; cities, where more than half of the city&#8217;s residents commute by bike on a daily basis. But more than that, it also has some of the best restaurants and shopping in Europe as well. Copenhagen is the perfect destination to start for a whirlwind tour through the Nordic countries, as you make your way to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointsandtravel.com\/magical-48-hours-oslo-norway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norway<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointsandtravel.com\/walking-to-sweden-finlands-kvarken-archipelago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweden<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointsandtravel.com\/finding-peace-in-western-finland-maakalla-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Finland<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointsandtravel.com\/travel-blog-iceland-excursions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iceland <\/a>. I had seen pictures of it for years, flipping through travel magazines and wondered what it would be like to visit. This is the place you see on all the postcards of Copenhagen. It\u2019s a colorful, historic canal filled with anchored boats and lined with&nbsp;17th-century townhouses. It was once an international commercial port, where now the homes lining the water on both sides sit above restaurants and shops. The oldest known house here dates back to the late 1600\u2019s. They say house #9 is the oldest and that Hans Christian Andersen lived in #20, #67 and #18!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Little Mermaid Statue<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_16028\" style=\"width: 552px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723142955\/Snip20160723_33.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16028\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723142955\/Snip20160723_33.png\" alt=\"near Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark, Things to do in Copenhagen, Denmark\" width=\"542\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Calvin Smith, Creative Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was curious about the little mermaid statue and which house it was that Hans Christian Anderson had lived in while writing his famous book with the same name (ends up it was #67 in Nyhavn, where he also wrote <em><\/em>). Ok, so maybe it is a bit touristy, but still, when you grow up with a fairytale, you can\u2019t wait to see the little mermaid come to life! And you can\u2019t go all the way to Copenhagen and not stop by for a quick visit to see this bronze statue! It is along the river walking north of the Nyhavn houses.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bispebjerg Cemetery<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_16029\" style=\"width: 868px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723143543\/Snip20160723_36.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16029\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723143543\/Snip20160723_36.png\" alt=\"Bispebjerg Cemetery, Copenhagen, Denmark, Things to do in Copenhagen, Denmark\" width=\"858\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by hunbille on Creative Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One thing you must not miss is a visit to the Bispebjerg Cemetery. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointsandtravel.com\/new-orleans-cemetery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cemetery<\/a>. (I think it is genetic!). And even though in the states, most cemeteries are just that \u2013 cemeteries. Here in Copenhagen, they are more like parks, where you will find locals walking, jogging, and biking their way on the paths.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Rosenburg Castle and Gardens<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_16030\" style=\"width: 866px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723143850\/Snip20160723_37.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16030\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723143850\/Snip20160723_37.png\" alt=\"Rosenburg Castle, Copenhagen, Denmark, Things to do in Copenhagen, Denmark\" width=\"856\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosenburg Castle, Photo by Ciska van Geer, Creative Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I spent a large amount of my time in Copenhagen wandering around the side streets via my rented bicycle, but also went on a walking tour of the area\u2019s historic city center. Starting along the park, I went to the Rosenborg Castle, which was built in the early 17<sup>th<\/sup> century and holds the crown jewels and massive royal art collection. There is also a fabulous King\u2019s Garden area that surrounds the castle.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palace<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_16031\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723144551\/Snip20160723_40.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16031\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16031\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsinspire\/20160723144551\/Snip20160723_40.png\" alt=\"Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen, Denmark, Things to do in Copenhagen, Denmark\" width=\"960\" height=\"524\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christiansborg Palace, Photo by Tore S\u00e6tre, Creative Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You can also visit the Amalienborg Palace, which has four identical buildings, where you can see the changing of the guard every day at noon. There are expensive fashion houses, as well as local Danish designers who sell amazing products. It has two huge shopping malls and it\u2019s almost a mile long!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bl\u00e5g\u00e5rdsgade<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This area of Copenhagen is full of live music, local bars and a chilled out atmosphere and is a great place to spend a Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Want more inspiration?
