But be encouraged, that you can take your digital SLR camera out of \u201cauto\u201d mode and capture beautiful night-time images too.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s my <strong>5 best night photography tips for beginners<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4985-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4985-2.jpg\" alt=\"travelocity_IMG_4985-2\" width=\"960\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4985-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4985-2-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><em>Self portrait in Times Square, New York.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1) Use a tripod<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is an essential tool for night photography. In order to capture the sharpest image possible with the least amount of noise (low ISO), exposure time will have to be longer than regular daylight photography. And that means your camera should be as still as possible.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4969-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4969-2.jpg\" alt=\"travelocity_IMG_4969-2\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4969-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_4969-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a>\n<p>I currently use a Vanguard Alta Pro 254CT tripod (<a href=\"http:\/\/travelwithbender.com\/resources\/photography-gear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see all my photography gear<\/a>), which works a charm but Vanguard also offers a travel-friendly VEO series which is smaller and lighter. Sturdy and solid are key. RAW is a lossless format which means you\u2019ll be able to obtain more detail later in post-processing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cpn.canon-europe.com\/content\/education\/infobank\/image_compression\/how_to_set_raw_jpeg.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Canon<\/em><\/a><em> users: Go to \u201csettings\u201d menu then click \u201cquality\u201d and choose \u201cRAW\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imaging.nikon.com\/lineup\/dslr\/basics\/26\/01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Nikon<\/em><\/a><em> users: Go to \u201cshooting\u201d menu then click \u201cimage quality\u201d and choose RAW, then go to \u201cimage size\u201d and choose \u201clarge\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>TIP:<\/strong> I use Adobe Lightroom for post-processing, which is the most popular software among photographers, for very good reason. So look for the \u201cAF\/MF\u201d switch on the side of your lens and move it to \u201cMF\u201d. Now you can turn the focus ring until the desired portion of the scene is in focus.<\/p>\n<p>Because your subject may be far away or dimly lit, it\u2019s best to use \u201clive view\u201d mode (your camera\u2019s LCD screen) to see more detail. Modern DSLRs will allow you to zoom in multiple times, which is the key to capturing tack sharp night photos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cpn.canon-europe.com\/content\/education\/infobank\/digital_camera_features\/live_view.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Canon<\/em><\/a><em> users: more details on \u201clive view\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imaging.nikon.com\/support\/digitutor\/d5300\/functions\/liveview_magnify.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Nikon<\/em><\/a><em> users: more details on \u201cpreview zoom\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_0762-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_0762-2.jpg\" alt=\"travelocity_IMG_0762-2\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_0762-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_0762-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><em>CN Tower in Toronto, Canada.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4) Turn off image&nbsp;<\/strong>stabilization<\/h3>\n<p>If your lens supports \u201cvibration control\u201d or \u201cimage stabilization\u201d (same thing with different name, depending on the manufacturer), then turn it off when using a tripod. While it can be very handy for hand-held shooting, it will only add subtle vibrations and blur to your final image when using a tripod.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_5044-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_5044-2.jpg\" alt=\"travelocity_IMG_5044-2\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_5044-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/inspire\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/travelocity_IMG_5044-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><em>Handheld panning in Times Square, New York.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5) Use remote release or built-in timer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pressing the shutter button on your camera will produce vibration, and vibration is the enemy of a tack sharp night photo. There are two ways to avoid this \u2013 buy a remote release or the free option, use the camera\u2019s built-in timer.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of cameras support 2- and 10-second timers and exposures of up to 30 seconds. However, if you want to go longer, then switch the dial to \u201cbulb\u201d (B) mode. The catch is that you either need to hold onto the shutter button the entire time (and risk adding vibration) or use a remote release.
