Island adventures await in the Bahamas! We\u2019ve partnered with international travel blogger Angie Orth from Angie Away<\/a> as she shares one of her favorite excursion experiences in The Exuma Cays. <\/em><\/p>\n

Not much went right during our wedding in The Bahamas<\/a>, but I\u2019m happy to say the honeymoon was lovely and without any <\/em> movie-worthy drama. We had our hearts set on St. Lucia<\/a> or the British Virgin Islands<\/a>, but the flights from (MHH) Marsh Harbour, Bahamas<\/a>, to those further Caribbean airports would\u2019ve dragged us through Miami airport for a couple of extra days \u2026 and I\u2019m pretty sure no marriage should start out in the chaos of MIA.<\/p>\n\"Honeymoon--450x600\"<\/a>\n

We ended up choosing a foolproof mega-resort on Exuma, another Bahamian island. Though it\u2019s not typically our style to hole up at an all-inclusive, it ended up being a really good, albeit expensive, decision.<\/p>\n

During our six nights, we rested as much as we could though I was surprised at how hard it is to just flip off the wedding stress switch. Considering I\u2019d been the most overwhelmed I\u2019d ever been in my entire life, it was challenging to let it all go and just be carefree and mentally stable. Even after a couple of days sitting around the pool, we grew restless \u2013 we just aren\u2019t the types to let grass grow under our feet, ya know?<\/i> \u2013 so we escaped the grounds and went out with Four C\u2019s<\/strong> Adventures<\/strong><\/a>, one of the island\u2019s most trusted tour operators.<\/p>\n

Trusted outside the all-inclusive resort world,<\/i> that is. You won\u2019t hear about Four C\u2019s if you\u2019re staying at the biggest hotel on the island, because they offer their own internal tours. Our butler, who was wonderful in all respects and acquiesced to our every whim, was not allowed to call Four C\u2019s to confirm our excursion. I share this so if you are staying at an all-inclusive on Exuma, you\u2019ll know that it\u2019s absolutely ok (and recommended!) to go off property for tours \u2013 especially if you want to see the REAL swimming pigs of Exuma.<\/p>\n

The mega-resort tour takes guests to see pigs, but I did some digging and found out that they aren\u2019t ones that are now the focus of the Travel & Leisure ad campaign<\/a>. Booking a day trip with Captain Pat and Four C\u2019s is the best way to make sure you see the real famous pigs of Big Major Cay \u2013 not imitation pork!<\/p>\n\"honeymoon-450x600\"<\/a>\n

The full-day trip with Four C\u2019s Adventures is the ideal way to experience a large swath of the Exuma Cays<\/a>, an archipelago of 365 stunning islands covering 130 turquoise miles. The day\u2019s itinerary will vary based on weather and tides, but on this high-speed water safari, you\u2019ll likely walk on a 2-mile long sandbar, snorkel in world famous Thunderball Grotto near Staniel Cay, view a sunken drug plane, feed endangered Bahamian Rock iguanas on Leaf Cay, find starfish as big as your head, feed the REAL swimming pigs and snorkel with pet nurse sharks and schools of bonefish.<\/p>\n

Only in Exuma does a real life wild animal safari get you close enough to feed & touch many of the creatures! At $160 per person for the 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. tour, it\u2019s a great value.<\/p>\n

My Top 5 Highlights from the Four C\u2019s Adventure Tour<\/h2>\n

1. Thunderball Grotto Near Staniel Cay<\/b><\/h3>\n\"Screen-Shot-2015-11-17-at-1.34.40-PM-600x302\"<\/a>\n

It looks like a hunk of limestone, but inside this unassuming island is a hollowed out cavern, perfect for snorkeling \u2013 and espionage? In the 60s, James Bond Thunderball<\/i>was filmed here, and that\u2019s where the grotto gets its name.<\/p>\n\"Screen-Shot-2015-11-17-at-1.35.25-PM-600x362\"<\/a>\n

There were a few dozen folks on our tour, so I recommend being the first person off the boat and in the grotto if you want to have a moment of peace and quiet inside. Otherwise, plan to share it with all your new boat friends!<\/p>\n

2. Swimming Pigs on Big Major Cay<\/b><\/h3>\n\"honeymoon-2-480x600\"<\/a>\n

You never know if the pigs will make an appearance \u2013 they are wild animals with a mind of their own, after all, but as their popularity has grown over the years, so has their fan base. Boats motor up to the beach and the piggies swim right out to meet the adoring crowds.<\/p>\n\"honeymoon-4-450x600\"<\/a>\n

Don\u2019t show up without food though \u2013 that\u2019s just the height of rudeness. Though to be honest, these guys have really chunked up since the last time I visited. It doesn\u2019t seem like too many people forget to bring snacks.<\/p>\n\"DCIM355GOPRO\"<\/a>\n

3. The Friendly Sharks of Compass Cay<\/b><\/h3>\n\"honeymoon-5-600x600\"<\/a>\n

It\u2019ll cost you $10 to disembark from your Four C\u2019s vessel at Compass Cay Marina, but it\u2019s worth it to snorkel with a few dozen docile nurse sharks and hundreds of other fish.<\/p>\n\"honeymoon-7-450x600\"<\/a>\n

It\u2019s one of the most memorable moments of the safari, so don\u2019t wimp out because of a fear of sharks. There literally couldn\u2019t be nicer, more domesticated creatures in the sea!<\/p>\n\"DCIM355GOPRO\"<\/a>\n

4. Rock Iguanas on Leaf Cay<\/b><\/h3>\n\"honeymoon11-600x450\"<\/a>\n

Leaf Cay was once owned by Nicolas Cage, but now it\u2019s just home to heaps of endangered Caribbean Rock Iguanas.<\/p>\n\"honeymoon-12-600x600\"<\/a>\n

Like all the critters you\u2019ll encounter on safari with Four C\u2019s, the rock iguanas are surprisingly friendly. They\u2019ll just march right up and wait for you to share some grapes.<\/p>\n

5. Homes & Private Islands of the Rich & Famous  <\/b><\/h3>\n

Faith Hill & Tim McGraw, David Copperfield and heaps of fancy CEOs and European business magnates have purchased islands in the Exuma Cays, and Four C\u2019s captains make sure you get as close as you can to their fancy vacation homes without being too nosy.<\/p>\n

Once you zip by their private beaches and enormous bungalows, you\u2019ll be formulating a plan to sell all your worldly assets to buy a rock of your own after your Four C\u2019s safari \u2013 it\u2019s just that breathtaking.<\/p>\n\"honeymoon-9-450x600\"<\/a>\n

Tips for Exploring Exuma with 4C\u2019s<\/b><\/h3>\n

  1. If you can swing it, do the private tour, not the group one.<\/strong> Back when I worked in The Bahamas often as a publicist, we were able to charter Four C\u2019s to take us out and I confess, there is a big difference. I could barely snap a pig photo without another tourist getting in the shot, and there wasn\u2019t as much flexibility to stop and find starfish or stingrays. Plus on a private tour, you get the added bonus of having fresh conch salad whipped up for you right on the beach \u2013 something you just can\u2019t do when you have a boat full of people.<\/li>\n
  2. If you don\u2019t take the private tour, bring cash<\/strong> \u2013 if you don\u2019t, you won\u2019t be able to disembark at Compass Cay to swim with the sharks and you\u2019ll miss out on lunch at Lorraine\u2019s in Black Point. (Actually Lorraine\u2019s does take credit cards, but cash is nice to have and makes the transaction quicker.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
