For this “Under the Radar Destination” edition, Travelocity spoke with the well-traveled Selena Reyes. Selena, while Texan by birth, has a soft spot for a city that couldn’t be much further from the Lone Star State – Portland, Maine.<\/p>\n

How did you come to be an expert on Portland, Maine?
\n<\/strong>During summer breaks when I lived in Philadelphia, my family used to take trips up the east coast, ending at our favorite vacation spot, Portland, Maine.<\/p>\n

Why is Portland so special to you?<\/strong>
\nThis place became a staple in my childhood, some of my favorite memories happened here.<\/p>\n

Where in town would you go to celebrate a special occasion?<\/strong>
\nI share my summer birthday with my twin brother.  The one thing we can agree on is where to eat to celebrate our special day. Every year we were in Portland we would go to our favorite restaurant, Five Fifty Five<\/a>.  Its an old fire station that was converted into a restaurant for special occasions.  It embodies a more quiet atmosphere, but serves up a twist on American classics.  My love for lobster mac & cheese began here.<\/p>\n

What is a great small, local eatery that only locals know about?<\/strong>
\nThe coffee shop  Arabica <\/a> is one of the many quaint, cool coffee shops that you will stumble upon while on your stay in Portland.  This one however is special.  Not only do they put maple syrup in some of their specialized lattes, but they also created the Moo drink.  This drink is basically steamed milk, available by itself or with any of their delicious flavored syrups, the possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n

What local venues are the best place to catch some live music? <\/strong>
\nWhen staying anywhere in Maine, spending time on the waterfront should be at the top of your list.  You can listen to your favorite band while enjoying looking out onto the water filled with sailboats.  The Maine State Pier in Portland, allows you to do just that.  Attend concerts on a venue built on a pier for an unforgettable experience.<\/p>\n

If a visitor wanted to do some true local shopping in Portland (i.e. local products not available nationally) where should they go?<\/strong>
\nShopping in downtown Portland is a unique experience.  With tons of one of a kind shops you\u2019re likely to find something special to commemorate your trip.  Home to the Maine Potters Market, you can choose from a variety of fine pottery handmade in Maine.  Another local and special favorite is sold at Sea Bags<\/a>, where you can buy tote bags or wallets all made from recycled Maine sea sails.  Customers can even design their own for a more unique accessory.<\/p>\n

If a beer or wine aficionado came to town, where would you send them to sample locally made “beverages”?<\/strong>
\nIf you\u2019re in Portland and love a good brew, you must go to Liquid Riot Bottling Company<\/a>. Enjoy a housemade beers & spirits in a hip while enjoying some unique dishes served up from their kitchen.  With over 25 beers to choose from you will leave here with your beer tooth satisfied.<\/p>\n

Are there any historical spots\/museums\/etc, that would help visitors to learn more about Portland?<\/strong>
\nThe Portland Museum of Art houses more than 17,000 objects items of the decorative and fine arts dating from the 18th century to the present.  It is located in the downtown area known as The Arts District, and is the largest and oldest public art institution in the U.S. state of Maine.  Local tip:<\/em> it is actually free on Friday nights from 5-9pm.<\/p>\n

If a visitor wanted to get a feel for the Portland area, are there any tours, walks, excursions that you would recommend?<\/strong>
\nThe Downeast Duck Adventure<\/a> is probably the most fun you will have on your trip.  It is a fully-narrated 60-minute adventure through Portland, Maine and yes, you will get wet!  You get to ride into the waters of Casco Bay to view Portland’s working waterfront, Calendar Islands and marine wildlife.<\/p>\n

Other than what you have listed above, what is a special place that you would take a friend visiting Portland for the first time?<\/strong>
\nThis first time must incorporates food, a local favorite and a Maine specialty.  For any person visiting Portland for the first time I strongly suggest you go to The Holy Donut<\/a>.  The base ingredient is Maine potatoes.  Yes, potatoes.  They are some of the most delicious donuts I have ever had.  You can custom make your own donut with the choice of cake and glaze.  The must try flavor? The bacon-cheddar filled donut.<\/p>\n
