Everyone knows the west coast of Mexico is beautiful, but did you also know Cabo restaurants offer some of the best food in the world? We asked Kelly Stilwell of Food, Fun & Faraway Places to share her favorite Cabo spots for food enthusiasts, so you can start making your plans now for tasting your way through this city by the sea.
Cabo San Lucas is a resort city boasting turquoise seas and white sand beaches, but few visitors know it’s actually a gastronomic mecca, with incredibly fresh seafood and creative local ingredients. Of course, you’ll find an abundance of Mexican dishes, from tamales and tacos to those scrumptious churros, but other international cuisines are also readily available.
Cabo is for Foodies
Many people are surprised that Cabo has so many outstanding restaurants. Everyone you speak to has a favorite you’ll want to try, and new restaurants are opening all the time. So how to choose? It’s not easy, but these restaurants were selected by Travelocity for the Gnational Gnomad annual summit meeting in 2018. Foodies, rejoice!
Gastro Bar
Located at the five-star Paradisus Los Cabos, the Gastro Bar is the only restaurant in this all-inclusive resort that is not included in your stay. The experience is over-the-top, led by ten Michelin star chef Martin Berasategui. This isn’t the place to stop in for a quick bite — not that you’d want to. How often are you able to eat at a restaurant with a Michelin starred chef? You’ll be immersed in a culinary adventure, with each dish being paired with a wine chosen by Chef Berasategui. Go ahead and become the envy of your friends by posting pics of these totally Instagrammable plates!
The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting, the perfect setting for a romantic evening if you’re in Cabo for a couples getaway. Slow down, sit back and enjoy your friends or family while the wait staff surprises you with each creative dish.
Hours are 6-11 p.m., and reservations are suggested as seating is limited. Gastro Bar does accept walk-in guests not staying at the resort. The dress code is elegant. Note: Gastro Bar is an adults-only restaurant.
La Palapa
Part of the exclusive VIP Royal Service at the Paradisus, La Palapa is an a la carte restaurant overlooking the sea of Cortez. Not open to the public, you must book the Royal Service package to have access to La Palapa. A truly elegant and upscale experience, with Royal Service, your butler will be ready to serve you at any time with a call to his private line. Your mini bar is stocked daily with your favorites replaced. Don’t forget to take a look at the pillow menu (yes, it’s a thing!) and let your butler know your preference upon arrival.
Though the view is spectacular, La Palapa isn’t one of those spots that give you that and not much else. The food at La Palapa is outstanding, with appetizers like fresh ceviche.
Everything is prepared with local ingredients. The seafood is outstanding.
Don’t forget dessert. Chocolate and pistachio pair so well.
La Palapa is open 7-11 a.m., 12-4 p.m., and 6-11 p.m. every day. Dress is casual. Stop by and let them know if you have a large party so they can be prepared upon your arrival.
Gabi Beach
Gabi Beach is on the other side of the Paradisus, also with stunning views of the sea. Try the fish or shrimp tacos. After all, there’s no better time to order fresh seafood than at a Cabo restaurant! The tuna tartare, marinated with tropical fruits and served Napoleon-style with perfectly ripe avocado, was scrumptious. Order with the guacamole and chips as an appetizer for the table.
Access to Gabi Beach is only for Paradisus, Royal Service, and Family Concierge guests. Dress is casual. Note: Upstairs is for adults only.
Avenue Bar
For exotic creative cocktails, the Avenue Bar is open and airy with a laid-back feel. Ask the bartender to create something just for you, or peruse the menu for specialties like the Blue Lagoon or Avenue Cosmo.
The Especial Mai Tai will immediately set you in a tropical mood. Watch the bartender muddle the pineapple and orange. You’ll see no canned juice in this cocktail as each juice is added straight from the fruit. The Especial Mai Tai pairs well with fish, too, in case you’d like to order it at dinner.
Also try the Mojito de Fresca, with Anejo rum and fresh strawberries. It’s the perfect beach day cocktail. Dress at the Avenue Bar is beachwear casual. Hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Coco’s Bar
Beach bars aren’t for me said no one ever, and Coco’s at Paradisus is the ultimate spot for a cocktail, set between the pool and one of the few totally safe-swimming beaches in Cabo.
Ask the bartender to create an organic cocktail or specialty drink. The Spicey Love cocktail is refreshing and so delicious, made with Absolute Raspberry vodka and fresh strawberry juice. Be patient. This decadent drink takes time to prepare but is so worth the wait.
Dress at Coco’s Bar is beachwear casual. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Note: You won’t find food on the menu at Coco’s Bar, but they will be happy to order from one of the restaurants and deliver it to you. The service at Paradisus is exceptional.
Paradisus In-Room Dining
Speaking of ordering food, room service is always an option at Paradisus resort. Why not stay in one morning and order the French toast? Dress is pajamas or the lovely and soft robe provided!
The lunch and dinner menu includes salads, burgers, steaks, pasta, and even fried chicken. Of course, the Mexican specialties are also available. With 13 restaurants to choose from at Paradisus Los Cabos, the toughest decision of the day will be where you should eat next!
Note: Paradisus Los Cabos offers the best of both worlds; an Adult-Only Royal Service with Personalized Butler Service and Family Concierge; a unique vacation experience that meets the needs of families with children.
Blanc Ocean
Le Blanc Spa Resort is a five-diamond luxury resort on the Baja Peninsula. An absolutely stunning property with an ultra-luxurious spa, put this resort on your bucket list.
Looking for a destination you won’t have to leave to experience incredible meals? Le Blanc has that covered, too. In the words of Executive Chef Florian Durre of Le Blanc Spa Resort, I believe the kitchen is the truest of melting pots: bringing together the passage of time and the blending of cultures. The kitchen represents a unique perspective of history.
At Blanc Ocean, Chef Jessica Diaz Hernandez uses cutting-edge techniques in preparing your meal with the freshest local ingredients. The tacos were heavenly. Can’t decide whether to go with steak, seafood, or pork? Just let your server know and you can create your own combination.
With nine different restaurants from Asian to Italian to a simple cafe with luscious desserts, there is no shortage of choices at Le Blanc Spa Resort. Dress is resort casual.
Note: Le Blanc is an adults-only resort.
Garza Blanca Resort & Spa
Our group had the privilege of being the first guests to dine at Garza Blanca Resort & Spa before the opening. The hotel staff lined up and welcomed us to their resort with hand over heart, a traditional greeting gesture in Mexico.
You’ll have several dining choices at Garza Blanca Resort & Spa. Blanca Blue is a gourmet fine dining experience featuring avant-garde flavors and local produce. This is the place to get dressed up and celebrate vacation mode! BocaDosSTK is a modern steakhouse promising the finest cuts of meat and featuring live music. Hiroshi is a contemporary Japanese and Asian fusion restaurant, offering sashimi, sushi, tempura, yakitori, and more, all with the freshest ingredients available.
Try a starter like the Mackeral Tostada or the beet salad paired with the Andromeda Chenin Blanc from Valle de Guadalupe. The Corn Pita with octopus paired with Casa Magoni Chardonnay-Vermentino was exquisite!
The Suckling Pig with peanuts, chilhuacle chile, peas, and baby carrots was also wonderful and was paired with Dos Buhos Cabernet. Who knew wines from this region were so delightful? Save room for dessert, like the guava and cocoa cheesecake with orange ice cream. Yes, you want to order that one! Pair it with the local Monte Xanic Late Harvest port. Dress will depend on which restaurant you choose, but most are resort casual.
Note: Garza Blanca Resort & Spa is a family resort and offers a free kids’ club and optional all-inclusive privileges.
Don Diego
The Sandos Finnesterra All Inclusive Resort has many offerings from Mexican to Italian to a Cupcake Cafe. Our group dined at Don Diego, the international buffet featuring a different theme every night of the week, from BBQ to Asian to Mexican and more. We were lucky enough to be visiting on Mexican night, which was fantastic.
This is not your ordinary buffet. Begin with salad and a few appetizers or soup. For main dishes, choose from tacos, fish, pork, shrimp, and others. The dessert bar is incredible, with cakes, candies, and local specialties. A menu is also available, but do take a look at all the buffet choices before you decide. Dine inside or out on the patio with gorgeous views of the city. Dress is resort casual.
Note: Sandos Finnesterra All Inclusive Resort is a family resort and offers a free kids’ club. They also host the famous White Party every Wednesday.
Cabo Adventures
Wait a minute — isn’t Cabo Adventures the company that takes you out on sunset sails and camel rides? Well, yes, but on many of the excursions, they also provide food, and we’re not talking sandwiches and chips.
On the sunset cruise, we were served Bento-style boxes with pasta salad, cheese, bread, and other snacks.
The day we spent riding camels, we had a Mexican fiesta and learned to make tortillas.
We even took part in a tequila tasting.
Cabo truly is the perfect destination for foodies, and it keeps getting better and better every year. Have you been to Cabo? Be sure to let us know your favorites in the comments so we can check them out the next time we go.
