In the northern end of Napa Valley, where hot springs bubble and mineral-rich waters flow, California’s original wellness center is as invigorating as ever.
Calistoga is the spa town credited with putting Napa Valley on the world wine map back in 1976. Pay homage to the legend-launching chardonnay at local winery Chateau Montelena or catch the Napa Valley Wine Train to make your way around the vineyards. When you visit the celebrated wineries during your journey, raise a glass to savvy 19th-century Calistoga for seeing money in mud baths, and building the railway in the first place.
If you recall images of graceful hot air balloons soaring over Napa, the champagne-sipping couple on board were almost certainly gazing down on Calistoga. Follow their lead and float over town. You might spy Castello di Amorosa, another Calistoga winery with a legendary reputation. While it looks every inch the serene 13th-century Italian villa – from authentic bricks to basement torture chamber – the estate actually dates back to 2007. Take the grand tour to take it all in.
Earthy or ethereal is the way of wellness round these parts. Lace up your boots and head out of town to commune with California’s famous geyser, Old Faithful. Or turn spa-wards, snuggle into fluffy robes, and ask for “The Works.” In Calistoga parlance, that means mud facial, mineral bath, steam, wrap, and massage.
Feeding blissed-out diners is another local talent, and laid-back is the main rule. A side of Louisiana jazz with barbecue on a Saturday night is what passes for rowdy here. There’s no shortage of lingering views and farm fresh ingredients are a given.
Surrender to the heady combo of mountain air, hot springs, and free-flowing Napa wine. The sedating effects are well known and the town’s quaint inns and cool ranch wineries are masterful at putting sleepy guests to bed.
