Sedona Biking

Ever wanted to feel like a daring explorer, riding out into the dramatic wilderness of a classic Western? It's time to go mountain biking in Sedona.

The thrill is twofold. First off, you'll get to experience, up close, some of Arizona's most spectacular scenery. We're talking pink and red rocks forming needles and plateaus, rivers winding through desert valleys and big skies full of eagles, condors and vultures.

The other reason that mountain bikers flock to the Sedona region is that the trails themselves are just completely awesome. Pedal along snaking paths that wind down to quiet creeks and glide along ridges with expansive panoramas of the valley below.

Whether you're renting a bike or bringing your own, make sure you pack enough water for the hot Arizona days. The variety of trails means that there are cycling opportunities for every ability, but anyone can be caught out by the sun.

Ready? Pick up your Red Rock Pass and head out on one of these trails for guaranteed thrills and spills.

Cycling Arizona's Aerie Trail

  • Get your first taste of Sedona biking at the Aerie Trail, a shorter loop that's ideal for a gentler introduction to mountain biking in the area.
  • You're in the shade for large sections of the trail and when you're out in the open you get a full view of Sedona's iconic scenery.
  • The Aerie Trail links to other excellent biking routes nearby, such as the Deadman's Pass trail (don't let the name put you off).

Llama Biking Trail

  • Soar like an eagle on the Llama Trail. Hold on to your handlebars and pedal hard as you approach the jumps.
  • Even if you're not here for the views, you'll be bowled over by the dramatic red rocks in every direction.
  • Keep your eyes on the trail, as certain sections are more demanding and will test your technical skills to the max.

Ridge Cycle Trail

  • No pain; no gain. The hard work of a steep climb toward the top of Ridge Trail pays off with unbeatable views of Thunder Mountain.
  • The single-track trail is better suited to more experienced riders.
  • Cross the ford at Oak Creek and even more trails open up to you. Best of all, you won't encounter many other people as you fly down the paths of Cathedral Rock.
