We had a great stay overall. We would definitely recommend Sandals and Antigua. We loved it here - great location, beautiful beach, tasty drinks at the swim up bar, and the staff were mostly pleasant. Also huge plus - not sure if it was the time of year thou - but we never had to worry about finding lounge chairs by the pool or on the beach! We always could find a pair somewhere and didnt have to think about rushing down to throw towels on them :) A few, very minor negatives - the internet connection is problematic, only really works well in the lobby. We also happened to be there during a reunion week - and they closed restaurants because of it - limiting the ones available to the other guests.

The worst vacation/honeymoon ever!

Pros: The food, overall hospitality, and the NO tipping policy!
Cons: Upgrades to EVERYTHING starting with the rooms to the pool.
This was the worst vacation/to be honeymoon ever! The entire resort is very outdated even though we stayed in the Mediterranean Village which is supposed to be the newer section. In terms of things being outdated, let’s first start with the room…mold throughout the bathroom, uncomfortable yet squeaky bed, and unclean furniture. Now on to the resort, the facilities/restaurants needs some renovations as well especially the pool. At the pool, the staff allow guests to “reserve” the floaters as well as seats around the pool so as long as you have a towel there or you keep a floater near your area it was yours but in my opinion that was unacceptable and the staff should better manage the pool area from seats to the floaters. The majority of the restaurants were very good. However, we were very disappointed in Eleanor’s as it were to be one of the best restaurants there…the food was horrible and there were too many cats roaming around not to mention the guests that were feeding them. All in all, we were glad to depart from this resort and do not recommend it to others. It was a very costly trip yet very disappointing...Sandals need to and must do better because a lot of people there were complaining about their stay and it seems to be an issue throughout this chain of resorts.

Beautiful garden

Pros: gardens
Cons: more huts, better maintenance
Location: not a lot, but nice tours of the island are available
Sandals is a lovely resort with good food (better than many all inclusives) and great drinks. (the wine is drinkable)Most impressive are the grounds with lovely trees, bushes and tropical flowers. WE stayed in a walk out on the Mediterranean village side. it was beautiful. However, our patio door was broken for most of the visit, so we could not use it effectively. There were some other maintenance/housekeeping issues, but the room was attractive and comfortable. The staff were exceptional and it was evident that they were programmed to make everyone have a good time. I like the tasteful, but fun entertainment. OUr favorite was place was the cafe that made fresh crepes each day and wonderful coffees and pastries. Not enough huts on the beach, they said that they are working on it.

Gorgeous island, mediocre resort

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants
Cons: No free Internet
The island of Antigua is undeniably gorgeous, but the entertainment that Sandals provided at night is lame and boring. Our bed was extremely uncomfortable, waking up each morning with a sore back and we're in our 20s. My husband became very ill toward the end of the trip. The doctor cost $220 for the visit and meds. The Sandals nurse did not seem to know anything. They said it could be from the air, water, or someone else. He said this happens quite often. Take your vitamins before the trip! All staff are nice, but the Red Lane Spa staff and photographers walking around the island are extremely pushy. The one spa experience we did do was very good though. The free snorkeling trip was not worth the effort. You could hardly see any fish and what you could see was cloudy and not colorful. Drinks at the bar were excellent. When walking in the ocean, it is not clear enough to see your feet. The restaurants have good food, but the menus are limited. You need to make dinner reservations days in advance if you want to go to one of the three restaurants that require a reservation. The internet is not free, but we learned that if you buy a half hours worth of computer time ($7 US), they will not charge you more if you go over. In all, I would not recommend Sandals.

We enjoyed this vacation.

Cons: No free Internet
We really enjoyed our vacation. The Sandals resort was beautiful. The staff was friendly. We stayed on the Caribbean side of the resort in the Flamboyant building. The room was nice and kept exceptionally clean. Our room did not smell bad as stated in some previous reviews we read. The food was good; however, nothing made me say "wow" and the desserts were only okay. I think the rule that men have to wear long pants to most of the restaurants is unneeded, since most of the restaurants are open air and nothing fancy. The large pool did not have enough rafts for everyone, but we were able to find one when we went later in the afternoons. The ocean is calm and clear. There are plenty of snorkeling trips. The snorkeling in Antigua is okay, nothing great. Internet service costs.

Loved the Caribbean side!

The Caribbean side is the older side and so beautiful! The rooms had that old Caribbean Plantation feel. The newer side, Mediterranean, looked like a Las Vegas hotel. Little or no gardens, mostly lawn, where the Caribbean side had lush established gardens...gorgeous! The service was the same on both sides with access to all the same amenities, however they were closer to the Caribbean side. We hope to return next year with another couple and will ask for the Caribbean side again.

What a Great Experience

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
First time on an all inclusive. I had reservations that the food would be poor and, as the drinks were free, people would be falling down drunk everywhere. Couldn't be further from the truth. There were several restaurants serving everything from Italian, to Japanese to local food and more, all of which were excellent. The staff were super friendly, the resort was spotlessly clean, the drinks were good and the other holidaymakers were relaxed and friendly. Great value for money. Can't wait to go back.

Resentful staff made for awkward dinners and poor service

Cons: No free Internet
We went to Sandals Antigua for a family vacation/wedding. Safe to say, most of the family would agree with our impression. The resort is well-manicured and clean. However, the service was horrendous to the point that it dampened our celebratory mood. Perhaps the Antiguans are just unfriendly people or Sandals Antigua is just a bad place to work. It was clear that >95% of the staff provided the barest service with healthy dose of bile. The sole exceptions were the cook at Kimonos, the welcoming committee, the wedding planner, housekeeping (which did a good job but was still unfriendly) and the manicurist (who was from Guyana). We're generally like to mingle with local folks to learn their culture and cuisine. We've had beyond great experiences on Grenada and on the Yucatan peninsula. So, if you want to hit the Carribbean, there definitely are more welcoming destinations where your stay will be much more pleasant. Here's our breakdown: Our room: On the Carribbean side. Exceeded expectations. Modern, clean, white linens. Large updated bathroom. Opened to gardens with a semi-private pool, just beyond which was the beach. Housekeeping did an excellent job! She did get a little bit disgruntled that we had accidentally taken our coffee mugs out of the room and left them by the bar. 5 hours later, she asked me to go get them! Really? Restaurants: Well, from the other reviews, you know the deal - you gotta get reservations for 3 of the restaurants, and they all aren't open every night. You MUST reserve early. Despite being an all-inclusive resort, there actually are three tiers of service. Basic, where you don't even get a minibar. Concierge, which basically means you get the minibar and maybe a nicer room. And Butler which is self-explanatory. It appears that the Butler service has reserved at least half the tables at each of the restaurants, taking up the prime hours between 7 and 8:30. The rest of us have to scurry to get the remaining reservations and have to eat either early at 6:30 or late after 9. Clearly not as inclusive as advertised. The concierge has the miserable job of dealing with a line of impatient guests and a ringing phone all morning and understandably unfriendly. Kimonos: Above-Average Americanized Japanese cuisine, freshly made and not overcooked. Well presented. Great for a group - a nice show. Sushi Bar: Cheap cuts of fish, presented a little sloppily. Eleanors: The appetizers sounded great but were incredibly unappetizing (the lamb roti was really a bland cold pate wrapped in a cold roti). The entrees were very good. The dessert was disappointing. I found the pineapple donut disgusting - it sounded great, but wow! The service was the worst here. We asked for hot sauce and our request was met with incredible resistance. First response: "In a second." He then tried to clear my plate which I hadn't eaten b/c I was waiting for the hot sauce! Then we got a nearly empty bottle which we immediately emptied. Needing more (b/c we were a table for 12) we were met with "no, you already have the bottle" Finally, after waitstaff conferred, we finally got enough for the table. Bayside: The breakfast stop - typical fare. For dinner, it's a steakhouse. They overcook the meat by two degrees (medium -> well done). You have been warned. Barefoot: The best. The jerk chicken and beef patties are a must (not that you would go to this resort after reading this review). The only place we wanted to go back to. The waitstaff here was actually nice and refilled our drinks without asking (the only restaurant to do so). Cricketeer: A pub. Stock nachos, wings, burgers, etc. We did not get to go to the OK Corral or Marios. Beach: Nice clean expanse. Clear blue water. Swimmable. Annoying that the butlers come out before dawn and reserve the nice beach chairs before the regular folks get a chance and that half of the reserved beach chairs never get used. But we were early risers and got our chairs at 8 am before breakfast so we were able to enjoy a few mornings on the beach. Overall, we felt luxury was not included in this resort unless you pay for the $1000+/night Butler service. There are too few bars for the number guests. Although it is a pretty resort with a nice beach, we cannot recommend this resort to anyone b/c the service was simply unacceptably rude. This is a much prettier place than Dreams Tulum - but the service there was 1000-fold better. Sad to say, we're not going back to Antigua and probably won't go to another Sandals resort either.

Great way to vacation, did not have to worry about anything.

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants
Cons: No free Internet
We stay at this Sandals resort for my hooneynoon. I had a great time, the hotel room was awsome, restaurants were great. The only inconveniance was they has some construction going on and our room was directly underneath and we could hear the noise from our room. Luckly they would start at about 11 am and finish at about 3 pm. we were not in our rooms very ofter during that time. But other than that we had a great experiance. Its a great resort to visit they had many activities we had a great time and the best part we did not have to worry about carrying our wallet during our stay at the resort. It was a worry free vacation.
