You get what you pay for

Picture on the website are deceiving. Hotel is very rundown; vey dimly lit lobby; hallway leading to my room was missing a section of wallpaper; room had a very musty smell and shower backed up. The pro is the hotel is on market street and close to lots of public transportation and also very close to Zuni Cafe.

Beware outside.

The homeless are getting pushed out into the streets on Market Street South of the hotel people are doing drugs on the street and it's very dangerous if you do stay here I recommend you take a cab or Uber and not be walking on the streets especially at night

Traditional hotel very close to Bart

Very nice,. Needs more front desk staff. That was the only complaint. Otherwise everything was very nice.

Nice Bed, but...

Pros: -close to the theater -comfortable bed
Cons: -water pressure for shower -renewal of floor and/or carpet
Historic hotel near the Orpheum Theater. We met some foreign guests and they expressed concern over the homeless people loitering on Market St. The room had a comfortable king bed, but the floor creaked and made noises. We were near the elevators and people were out in the hallway talking and laughing (intermittently) until 3:30 a.m. The water pressure for the shower was sorely lacking (reminded me of England in the countryside; they really could have used a "power shower" device).

Disappointing Stay

My friends and I arrived for our stay early. We had to check out bags with the bell service since we had places to be prior to check-in time. The bell service was slow and unresponsive, we waited quite some time (He was friendly when he finally arrived). Then when we came to check in the staff was OK, not very friendly or inviting, but they got the job done and got us in our room. My biggest complaint was the the hallways of this hotel smell terrible and are muggy. Luckily the room did not have the same smell, it was however hot and muggy even with the AC at full blast. We also found that there were no towels in our room. Maybe this is an effort to go green and not put unnecessary towels in the rooms, but it was inconvenient to have to call down to the front desk (be on hold for 15 mins) then wait an hour for towels to be brought up to our room. All in all this hotel is much more run down than the pictures show. It is not a classy vintage hotel, it is a run down old hotel with some new bedding and pretty chandeliers. I would not go back.

Beautiful hotel in a great location near City Hall

Pros: Beautiful architecture and interesting history
Cons: The carpet in my room needed to be vacuumed... seemed like housekeeping missed it.
I stayed three nights at the Whitcomb and had an overall great experience.

Historic lovely hotel but check in troubles

Was here for the second time and this time there was a problem with our reservation. We had our confirmation and paid deposit but hotel didn't have us listed. We understand errors happen but the staff handled it poorly. Made us wait and made us feel very uneasy about whether we had a room or not. We did finally but no apology or no attempt to make us feel welcome.

Very nice, old fashioned hotel

Located in the market district close to tenderloin and Valencia you can walk to city hall from the hotel. They have security and a Starbucks on site. Parking was $38, but you can go in/out.
