Depressingly atmospheric.

Pros: Friendly, upbeat, helpful front desk, but not always on top of things. Good beds.
Cons: Clean the carpeting and paint the trim. Provide better quality paper goods. Get more reliable housekeeping staff. Update the heating and lighting.
Location: Very convenient to transportation. Short walk to Union Square. Nearby diners, a few restaurants.
The shabby chic wouldn't have been so bad if the lobby and room were not so dimly lit and always drafty and cold. The heat in the room took forever to come up (at least half an hour before you could feel a discernible difference). The morning free coffee and tea were whisked away promptly at 9:55AM, and the room service/bar/snacks were only available at certain limited hours. Compared to other SF hotels of this ilk in which I've stayed, where tea and/or sherry and cookies are served every afternoon, the feeling at Rex was one of stinginess. Had to request more toilet paper on our next-to-last day, when we were down to a half roll, and could find none in any closets or drawers. Also, when we needed an extension cord for our CPAP machines, they had to remove one from a Christmas decoration, and never came up with another (we were there for 10 days).

Perfect boutique hotel

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, great location, free drink each night, onsite restaurant
This is a lovely hotel with romance and charm matched with modern amenities. The literary theme is very appealing, and the onsite Library Bar is quaint and inviting. They offer a free glass of wine in the evening, and there was even live entertainment one night. What a delight! I checked in very late in the evening and although the valet was closed, the helpful gentleman at the front desk directed me to a garage just down the block which was even cheaper than the hotel parking. Every employee I interacted with was kind and helpful. My room was extremely clean, with full modern amenities - large flatscreen TV, hair dryer, coffee maker, free wi-fi, etc. My room was very quiet, even though it was near the elevator (never heard it). For those used to large hotel chains, you would consider the room a bit small (I live in a one-bedroom in NYC, so "small" is relative to me). But I found it perfect for my needs and extremely comfortable and charming. I even had enough room to work out. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, and a 24 hour Walgreens right on the corner. Super convenient location. If (hopefully when) I return to SF, I will definitely stay at this hotel again! Thanks Hotel Rex for a lovely stay!

A very good experience

Pros: Close restaurants, Quiet
We stayed at this hotel on 11/12-11/15. I was surprised how comfortable the bed was. The room is smallish, but not claustrophobic. The decor is eclectic, and a little worn, but interesting - cool art on the walls, hand-painted lamp shades, etc. Although our room faced the street, it was pretty quiet. There's also a hotel bar, with a one free drink per guest happy hour every day. And, if you didn't already know this, the hotel has a mascot, a sweet old pug named Max. He is very popular with the guests, even has his own Facebook page. San Francisco is not a cheap town. We felt Hotel Rex was a good value, especially considering the nice neighborhood (financial district). The hotel isn't cookie cutter - it has character, just like the city.

Excellent Stay

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, free wine, free coffee and tea, free bikes
My girlfriend and I stayed at The Hotel Rex for 4 nights. This boutique hotel is great! Although it is located in the heart of the city, you feel the stresses of city life melt away as soon as you walk through the doors. The lobby is dimly lit with a 1940's decor, bringing you back to simpler times. The pug sleeping in one of the lobby chairs is a testament to the lobby's soothing feel. The staff could not have been more pleasant either. They are all very helpful, knowledgeable, and excited to recommend great places in their city. They even have free bikes you can use to explore the city. The hotel is also much cheaper than the big name hotels in the surrounding area, making it even more appealing. I had never been to a boutique hotel before, but it appears to offer everything that any 4-star hotel would offer plus a little more personal attention. We had an excellent stay!

Perfect for couples at Union Square

My husband and I like this hotel for getaways in the City. It has a good location, valet parking, a quaint bar and excellent service. This is a "boutique" hotel, so don't expect a large ultra-modern chain hotel. If you want SF charm, you'll find it here. My only caveat is that it doesn't work super well for families. Rooms are not equipped with 2 beds. You'll need a suite with a sofa bed, which isn't the most comfy. They accomodated us when we arrived and had not realized our booking error, so the service is great. Make sure to take your picture with Maximo the Pug at the front desk.

Loved it...staff was so helpful. Location outstanding, atmosphere delightful.

Pros: Close restaurants
I was late in trying to book tours and the staff made all the arrangements for me when online told me everything was sold out. They found vegan restuarants as well that were delightful. Loved the live music in the bar on Friday night and it was a great place to have coffee and read early in the morning while my niece was still asleep. We loved our stay and there is not doubt this is where I will stay on my next visit to San Francisco. Rooms were small..but who spends time in the room?

Comfortable room, but small

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
This hotel is old and our room was small, but it was clean and comfortable. The location was fine, we could walk to the wharf. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.
