mixed thoughts

I would have given it 4 stars but on the second night the bathroom sink plugged up and would not drain. The service guy arrived and did all he could to unblock it but it just got worse so I was moved to a different room. Unfortunately, the room was not the same quality or size that I'd paid for and when I got there the room was cold. I turned up the heat and shut the curtains and it warmed up a bit. I awoke after 1am to being very cold. There was no heat on in the room. I found an extra blanket but with the temp. outside being in the mid-40s I couldn't get warm. I called the front desk and they told me the heat was on a timer and would not be back on until after 3am. They offered to send up a portable heater - which they did and it helped. When I checked out I explained what had happened and no offer of apology or compensation. I might also add that I had a meal in the hotel "bistro" the night before leaving and it left a lot to be desired. I might also add that there aren't many appealing places to eat in the area as it's on the edge of the tenderloin. I want to commend the service guy who was terrific and helped me move in spite of the fact that his job was to fix the sink. Had it not been for the lousy food and the room move, the stay would have been fine. I liked the feel of the place with a combo of the old and the new. It has some charm.

Nice hotel with some of the best staff ever

Pros: The staff, hands down, made this experience one of the best hotel experiences ever.
The hotel was walking distance to everything we needed to do for our stay. It was a perfect distance walk to the Nike Women's Half starting line in Union Square. The staff at Hotel Carlton are incredible - from before checking in to even after. They were warm, accommodating and funny!

Nice, friendly hotel

Pros: clean, friendly staff, comfortable rooms
Cons: The noise from the hallway is horrible. Need to put a threshold on the bottom of the door to the hallway to block the noise coming from hallway.
Nice, clean hotel, with wonderful staff. The rooms were clean and comfortable, but because it is an older hotel, you can hear hallway noise.

Such a friendly Hotel!

Pros: The rooms are not large, but well appointed. Ours had a large, walk-in closet, so the actual room never felt cramped with bags and luggage.
Cons: My only complaint is that the walls are thin so I heard all from the neighbors.
Location: Close enough to Union Sq. to grab the cable cars and enjoy the shopping. I loved the proximity to Polk street. Mr. Holmes Bakehouse around the corner!
The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The evening wine social attracted an great group of people. I loved the vibe of this hotel!

Great Location/Good Experience

Pros: The staff, the bed, décor, and charm.
Cons: Thin doors allowed for outside noise interruptions.
Location: Plenty of restaurants, pubs, cafes, and other big city pleasures all close by. Cable car and bus access was very easy.
Our room was nice, comfortable, and well sized. The staff was very friendly and more then willing to assist and answer questions. The Hotel was conveniently located in the middle of the city which made accessibility to attractions easy.

This hotel far exceeded my expectations! They were extremely helpful whenever I had a question and I loved the vibe and decorations!

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
Hotel Carlton is a great boutique hotel with a Middle Eastern flair. I had no idea what to expect since it was my first time ever going to San Francisco. The room was comfortable, clean, and had great style. The restaurant, Saha, was the best part! Eggs benedict with fava bean cakes and avocado was a unique dish I have yet to see anywhere else. I would definitely stay here again!

Great value, cool people

Pros: Close restaurants
Cons: No free Internet
Love the staff, the quirkiness of the place, the international feel, the fire in the lobby on a rainy SF morning. The rooms are old yet nicely renovated. Elevators are fun to read!

Quaint Hotel - EXCELLENT SERVICE

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, best staff i've experienced in any hotel
I was blown away by the friendly, helpful staff at Hotel Carlton. I loved the historic building and quaint, European feeling of the hotel. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom, while small, was very well lit (important for make-up application!), and there was a great walk-in closet that I wish I had at home! Also included was a safe for valuables. A mini fridge was delivered upon our request.
