"Great gaslamp location"
This place is close to everything...ball park, convention center, trolley and the gaslamp district. Fun. The decor is edgy, over function. A cool place to stay. But probably not for families. We were upsold to a suite at registration, sometimes a pain, but it was a great deal and we actually got a double upgrade for not a lot of cash. we were in a 'low' spot between the 4th and comicon, so they had some rooms to move us around to. I wouldn't expect this during conventions or when the padres play. Downside to being close to the trains and trolleys...they are noisy. Especially in the Front. They want a LOT for valet parking, but there is a self park lot around the corner for 1/3 the price. The pool is cool, but not a lot of sitting around space...unless you rent a lounge or cabana.

"Beautiful hotel in Little Italy near Gaslamp Dist."
I stayed at this hotel from February 02 - February 07 of 2016. This hotel is very close to many restaurants and shops. I walked most places and used Uber a few times (you don't need a rental car unless you want to venture out a little further). I recommend visting Crab Hut, which is a seafood restaurant located on 5th St in the Gaslamp District...try their crab legs (they are seasoned to perfection)!!! I would like to give a shout out to the Urban Boutique Hotel staff, Vince and Richard, they were the best! They were very helpful, attentive, patient, most of all cheerful...thank you gentleman for making my family and I feel comfortable and welcome! I am looking forward to my next visit!

"Classic downtown hotel! "
The Westgate is a classy, historic hotel that's in a great location in downtown. Across from Horton Plaza, it's very convenient to walk around downtown. The rooms are large, beds are comfortable and service is outstanding. I've stayed in downtown numerous times at many different hotels, at the Westgate is among the best! We had the best maid ever! When we got back to our room, she had emptied all of our travel bags (toiletries) and have them beautifully arranged on the bathroom counter and the room was immaculate! 2 rooms share a common hallway (behind a locked door) which was great because we stayed with another couple and we could have both our main room doors open if we wanted to and have a common area. Can't wait to go back and stay at The Westgate again.

"Boutique Hotel with Excellent Staff"
My overall rating is 3.5 stars. While the front desk staff's service was excellent, the place is a bit worn down and mattress seemed aged/old and has lost its firmness. In what seems to be a cabinet for a small refrigerator, it was vacant with no back panel which gave me the impression that they used to make refrigerators available in the past. When I stay at a hotel for more than couple nights, I like to have a refrigerator to keep my water bottles cold and miscellaneous food items fresh. I couldn't believe their fitness center - a tiny room with couple treadmills and hardly any equipments and not exactly conducive for more than 1 to 2 people to use at a time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who does not need the amenities mentioned in this review as it is conveniently located in gaslamp district and again, staff's excellent service makes up for other areas where they lack. Their restaurant was nice although it's with just one bartender serving the entire bar area plus the general dining area. As a foodie, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their food and this is another aspect that makes it worthwhile to stay with this hotel when visiting downtown San Diego.

This hotel is right on the harbor and walking distance from the Star of India and the Midway. It was less money than other downtown hotels. The restaurant is apparently being redone, so the only place to eat in the hotel was a cafe. They did have room service, which we did not use. We did get dessert at the cafe and enjoyed it. The room was clean and comfortable. Our keys turned off before we checked out, so when we got back after walking to a nearby restaurant for breakfast, we could not get into our room. There was a hotel staff member nearby who was very helpful. she did not want to just let us into the room (good for security) so she tried calling the front desk to get confirmation. It took a long time before we were let into the room. We we checked out a little while later, we let the front desk know. It was actually a pretty big inconvenience, if we had had a plane to catch, the amount of time it took to get back in the room could have been disastrous. It would have been nice if the front desk offered some compensation. I mentioned that, and he apologized again, but did not offer anything.

The front desk was helpful to when we needed more towels and a small fridge. I've never experienced going to the 12th floor just to get to the lobby and then another elevator to get to the rooms. It was really weird.
