Small but pleasant. Quaint & beautiful!!

Pros: Extremely friendly staff, nice, smiling and responsive.
Cons: Food choices & quality must up its game!
Location: Extremely well centered & totally short walking distance to shopping & souvenirs! No need for a taxi.
My family & I just visited here in June 2017. We normally stay at the big resorts such as the Riu Palace, so when we walked in it was a little different feel right from the beginning. The check in process was easy(not sure why other reviews complained so much about it?) The Hotel concierge was a "salesperson" & shady! Not worth speaking to because she(Brenda) just wants to sell you something. IF you want to book an excursion go to the Excursions Office & go sit down & speak with Hector! He is nice & informative & a good listener and provides you all the correct details! Rooms are small & quaint, nothing special but clean and comfortable. Hotel staff are professional & nice and they keep the premises very clean! They have 2 pools......Pool bar was a little dirty day after day but the staff & drinks come fast & furious which is a big plus!!! Pool on the lower grounds(next to the buffet) is clean & excellent. Food here is mediocre but decent! If you go to the hot bar in the buffet & order ready to serve that's the way to go(trust me) !! IF your a foodie or picky than dont come to The Reef Playacar or to Mexico in general. All the staff in the buffet are excellent & friendly which makes up for the food quality!! NOW...... the Beach at this property, IS THE BEST THING EVER!! Plenty of seating w/ umbrellas & cabanas which are 1st come 1st serve w/o a cost or reservations! Make sure you take advantage of the free non motorized activities such as boogie boards, catamarans, bikes etc.

Dear Bob & Family, It is a pleasure to read such a wonderful and detailed review. We are proud to hear that you keep a beautiful memory of your recent vacation at our hotel, you can rest assured we will share your kind words with our entire team and management. Indeed, our wonderful position in Playacar allows us to provide unique and recreational vacations. It is a separated, safe and quite neighborhood, which is surrounded by nature and only a few minutes far away from the heart of Playa del Carmen, the 5th Avenue. Please rest assured that your feedback has been displayed in the hotel for all our staff to see, especially for Hector. They will be truly motivated by your kind words, as they continuously endeavor to go beyond our guest’s expectations of service. We are glad to know that you enjoyed our beautiful beach and the non-motorized water sports. We would be pleased to welcome you and your family back at The Reef Playacar. Kind regards,

Dear queen b, We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your review and for giving us the opportunity to welcoming you on the past days. It is a pleasure to know that you liked our location, beach and our hotel facilities. We are sorry to know that you did not enjoy our the food offered in our buffet and snack bar together with the drinks. We try very hard to please all our guest wishes by offering a variety of dishes at the buffet and two a la carte restaurants. Regarding the swimming pool please let us inform you that we have staff that is in charge of cleaning it every day to provide our guests a comfortable and nice surroundings to enjoy. We do hope to have the opportunity of hosting you in the future, so we can change your perspective and offer you the hospitality that distinguishes us. Kind regards,

Great value resort

Pros: Closeness to Playa and quality of beach front.
Cons: Better beds and an English cable channel other than CNN.
Location: Short walking trip to Playa to the north and outdoor shopping center to the south. On site travel planner, although the price is a little steep.
This was our second time staying at the Reef. We took the premium upgrade this time for the access to better quality liquor, and that by itself was well worth the daily price increase. The other benefits included the wifi connection and a moderately better room. The rooms themselves are suitable for a short stay, but the beds are the weak point for a more lengthy stay. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, and there are plenty of daily activities to keep busy, from lounging on the beach to hanging by the poolside bar, snorkeling and other watersports, spa, gym, and of course the short walk into downtown Playa.

The beach makes everything ok

The check in/out desk is slow, they could use more people working during peak times. The grounds are wonderful. The pool is lovely but the varying degrees of volume on the music which mostly repeats the same set day after day is annoying. The 2 ft kid's pool is perfect to keep a small kid and margarita drinking parent happy day after day. There were usually other small kids around for the kids to interact with. The hotel seems sure whether its focus is family friendly or party friendly. Our first night in our room was a disaster. Room 213 closest to the concert/ event hall and front desk started in with the house music at 10pm and even worse mariachi band (my personal worst nightmare) started up at midnight and did not stop till 1am. No joke, it sounded like the band was inside our room. We were able to change to room 1611 the next day and the rest of our stay was fine. No more being woken up at night by music, only other hotel guests slamming doors and being loud in the doorway corridors. One of their excursion agents quoted us $89 per person for a day drip and on the next day another man quoted us $115 for the same trip - shady!! When I called him on the price change he got squirmy. A few staff members were wonderfully nice but most just doing their jobs. Food was just ok, drinks just ok. Despite all of the "just ok-ness" of this space, the beach is amazing and makes the marginality and affordability of this hotel worth the stay.

Not as good as the first time we stayed there.

Pros: Ital. restaurant and beach.
Cons: Staff support. So many people working as staff and yet most were just visiting among themselves. No offer to help us with taking our luggage to room
Location: Shopping either direction from the hotel and, again, the beach is wonderful.
No evening shows. Restocking of food items along the lines was very poor. Had to ask for a plate. No bacon for breakfast. Self-serve coffee machine empty. In the time we were there one staff person asked us once if we wanted a drink by the pool or by the beach. On a previous visit to The Reef we did not have to pay a surcharge for the Mex. restaurant.....this time $6 per person. Will say the Ital. restaurant was wonderful.

Not an all inclusive

Paying extra for the upgrade is a ripoff. Took us 6 days to get drinks in our room. Air conditioner was a constant problem

Excellent stay at an amazing resort!!!!

Pros: The staff and the Food!!!!
Cons: Need a night club or dancing. Even staff entertainment each night!!!
Location: 5th avenue was fun....a short taxi ride to tons of shopping, restaurants, etc.
My husband and I stayed here June 4-11, 2016 for our honeymoon!!! We looked around everywhere and decided on this resort!! Boy were we happy with our decision!! The jungle like feel was very tranquil and refreshing, made you feel like you were in paradise. The staff was AMAZING!!! Tyler (Ricky Martin as everyone calls him) was exceptional at making guests feel welcome! Sol was also very sweet, made everyone feel special and showed extra attention to all guests. The food was VERY good. The $6 extra for the Mexican wasn't worth it, I would say the $6 extra should be on the Italian restaurant!! The Italian restaurant was exceptional!! Also, loved having the little pizzeria, came in handy after too many cerveza's (if you know what I mean). hahaha! The beach was phenomenal, enough chairs for hundreds of people. The only CON I can think of is the Club presentation that they said would only take 90 minutes and it took 3 hours and they were disappointed with us for not joining!! Thank you for an amazing honeymoon Playacar, WE'LL BE BACK!!!!

Nice Beach, Terrible Hotel

Stayed at The Reef Playacar for 7 days 4/20-4/27. It was a couples trip with my best friend, Age 27-30 First I will start with the pros: -The beach is beautiful. Its large and has crystal clear water! Lots of beach chairs, No issues finding chairs by the beach. -The food at the hotel was decent. Two restaurants with great food, Mexican & Italian. The Mexican restaurant has a $6 fee pp if you want to eat there and the fee is charged directly to your room. -The majority of the staff is very friendly. They are always willing to serve and we never felt obligated to tip for good service. PAULINO was a server in the buffet and his service was spectacular! -5th Ave shopping is a $6 cab ride, 10mins away. CONS: -Check-In was a disaster! We had to switch rooms three times within the first two days of our trip before were were given a room we were satisfied with. It was a complete waste of time. Our first room had a roadside view where there was construction right outside our window. 2nd room was two twin size beds for me and my boyfriend. And finally, our third room was a decent king bed room. We had to move our 4 pieces of luggage on our own! No elevators! -Rude time share concierge trying to force you to purchase packages. -The Hotel is jungle themed so if your room is lower numbers. (500-1100) Expect no sun outside ur window. -sewer smell through the "jungle" and sometimes from our toilet. -No entertainment, no activities, no music! Boring hotel! -RUDE male towel staff!
