staff is nasty

The person in charge Javier acknowledged my daughter was not present and gave me the run around that they needed an email from Travelocity to refund me and then he denied my refund. For three hundred dollars. Really? I will never recommend Riu again to anyone again like I did for ten years

Not happy at all with hotel!

The hotel seems very old. The room had a strong smell of humidity. The towels smelled terrible. The beds were not comfortable at all. The sofa bed was ripped and very old. Possibly bed bugs as my 2 daughters had bites. My husband and I did not have any bites so they were not mosquitoes. Most of the staff was friendly, but there were a couple that were rude. The bartenders offered my husband a liquor bottle for purchase. They told him it was an aphrodisiac and if he needed a woman they would be able to get one for him. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I'm sure there are better ones for less money. Sorry Riu Bambu you are definitely not a 5 star hotel. I give you a 3.5.

Loved It

Pros: all inculsive
We arrived at the airport at 9:30PM, December 30 2012. To transfer to the hotel we used Dominican Airport Transfer They charged us $45.00 for the van. We had group of 5 people and. Took us straight to the hotel in no time. We had our personal guide Susan meeting us along with the driver, we didn't expect anything like that, so it was a pleasant surprise. She accompanied us to the resort and also helped us to book couple tours and came to say "good buy" when we were leaving, as we used the same transportation method to get back to the airport. Very reliable and on time. Check in was fast and without any problems. We lived in the rooms 3301 and 3305, it is quite place as it is further away from all the commotion. Rooms were nice and clean. There is a bar in the rooms and soft drinks in the ridge, that got restocked every other day. There is safe, that worked just perfect and nothing got stolen from us. My teenage kids had IPODs, laptops, IPADS, you name it, everything came home safely. Lock you money, passports, electronics in the safe, it is big enough to fit it all. We were leaving small tips for the people we got to know- bartenders and maids and it would pay off, although you do not have to do it About food. We've been to a few resorts in Dominican Republic and Jamaica in the past and I can tell that food was very good. There are 4 restaurants on site, which you need to book. Hibachi and Mexican and Italian, but they are buffet style, but Steak House is full service restaurant and food was amazing. Also you have your regular buffet, that opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner, You would never go hungry It was pretty windy and the ocean was busy and noisy. We spent a lot of time on the ocean, "riding waives", some people brought small surf boards for kids and it was a lot of fun, like sledding in the winter Pool was very clean and swim up bar was busy starting at 11 AM, Entertainment Team was the best. We've been to a lot of resorts, and I can tell you, that those guys do everything possible to keep you entertained and busy since morning till night, they are the best- A+. From crazy games at the pool to archery, aerobics in the water and on the beach, latin dance lessons and nightly shows and dance afterwards, it is amazing, how those guys keep going. If you are looking for the fun- this is the right resort to book. If you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them, We had a lot of fun, it was hard to leave and looking forward to come back sometimes again

overall good

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, clean comfortable
Cons: Noisy
Maids, wait staff and most front desk very helpful. Good selection of food and most well-prepared, but skip the reservation only Steak Night! Would have enjoyed our stay more if so much construction had not been going on and we were not advised of same when making reservation. But a good value for families, nice pools, beautiful beach. Don't run out of necessities...hotel gift shop charged me $14 US for deorderant!! Room had extra racks for drying stuff...a must at the beach. No hot water for two nights.

The WORST vacation ever!!!!

Pros: Close restaurants
Cons: Noisy, construction
We went to DR(at a different resort last year) and loved it so we went back this year. The RIU Bambu was the worst all inclusive ever. There is construction noise all day all around - by the beach, the kids pool and the buffet area. The construction really affected our experience - at anytime of the day from 7am to 9pm you can hear the bulldozers and see construction workers all around the resort. We tried to move hotels unsuccessfully, the reception staff were unresponsive - they always said we are waiting for an answer, call your travel agent. The beds are extremely uncomfortable, the rooms are in need of updates, and the rooms had ants. The food was okay, this resort and staff were not as friendly as our last DR experience. We went without hot water for two days. If you want to enjoy your vacation - select another resort.

VERY disappointed!

I have stayed at Riu Cabos in past and absolutely loved it! BEST vacation ever, so even though Dominican I found mixed reviews on, I considered since staying at the same chain resort, that should be good. WELL...NO! Staff was ok- I did not feel that overall friendliness. I felt as if any issue addressed- pushed off to someone else. Room- I noted I had tw0 other people with me, 18 and 21 yr old sons. We were given a room with two double beds PUSHED together! So someone slept on the 'crack' of the two beds and overall the three of us were in ONE bed. Every other day the refill the fridge/bar. NOBODY refilled one day and when they do they give you 4 small bottles of soda and two bottles of water; Cabos Riu FILLED the fridge. CONSTRUCTION! at 7am until 9- there was construction on the back of our villa! While lying on beach, bulldozers driving over the sand and literally PULLING the palm trees from around you to replant at the to BE third pool! Pools small crowded and by noon you are not going to feel refreshed in the human soup! GO to beach instead with breeze, cold shower and ocean. NO pool side service for drinks; you have to get your own, but assure you will be completely BOTHERED by vendors for massage, wind surfing, etc Gym- signs lead you to it BUT ITS NOT THERE! FOOD POISONING? day two my son started with this after eating hamburgers from the 24 hour cooler; my other last two days! FORTUNATELY the gift shop sells ampacillin. FYI if this happens and I wont get into the symptom detail, go get ampicillin give two pills then one every 6 hours until gone! In general Food is sub par! Summary...go somewhere ELSE! Dom is pretty and MAYBE another resort would be better, but I will not go back there again!

Bare bones all-inclusive

Uncomfortable bed and terrible food ruined my experience; but for me these are essentials for a relaxing vacation. Staff were nice and tried to be helpful. Pools were comfortable but lounge chairs filled up quickly. Drinks were watered down and low quality. Nice beaches with access to a few included activities (kayaking). Recommend staying on site, as two of our fellow travelers had wallets/purse stolen.

Wonderful family vacation!!

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, clean
Cons: entertainment, food
A very pleasant surprise! After reading the poor reviews of this resort, I was apprehensive about this resort. If you are going on a vacation for the food than I would not recommend this resort however there is plenty to eat and always found something I liked especially the desserts. The beach was fantastic with plenty of chairs for everyone and a very short walk from the rooms & pool area. The rooms are villas which I really liked instead of being in a large hotel style resort. The staff were pleasant and helpful & many spoke very good English although it is a good idea to know some Spanish. The rooms were very clean, although the beds were hard & pillows very flat. They did not have blankets or wash clothes but when asked they were brought to my room soon afterwards. The bathrooms were small but adequate & the showers had great water pressure which I appreciate. The entertainment was not all that good and there was not much to do after dark. However there is plenty to do during the day with windsurfing, catamarans, snorkeling, volleyball and more. If you are going for the beach & sun I would recommend this resort. We actually went for my daughters wedding and it was beautiful. The wedding planner did an excellent job putting it together and the photography was some of the best I've seen. I think this was through the the resort. The only complaint I had with this was we had a steak dinner later that evening and although it was okay for us I would not recommend it. Overall it was a nice, enjoyable place.

What's not to like?

Pros: best beach
Cons: wasn't there long enough
The Bambu has the best beach along the Bavaro strip. The food is typical D.R. The booze is also typical watered down stuff - LIKE ALL THE D.R. resorts. AAAA+++++
