Perfect resort for a relaxing AFFORDABLE getaway

Cons: The bed was awful! So hard our arms fell asleep. But we were able to manage since it was a low-key restful vacation.
Location: We took the VIP Catamaran tour to Paradise Island. You MUST DO THIS!!! Best day of our trip. You take a 1.5 hour bus ride there, but SO WORTH IT!! :)
My boyfriend and I just returned from a 7 day stay at Riu Merengue. We were very fortunate to get a room in the garden (1621.) The grounds are BEAUTIFUL in that area and well maintained. All of the houses are brightly painted and the shrubs and trees are well groomed. I also took a run through the Village. Not as bad as reviews said. The room was very nice upon arrival. Yes, there was a little musty smell, but you get that at most resorts where the air is on all day and it's humid. The bathroom was clean and had a nice shower-head and great water pressure. The only downside of the room was the bed. It was hard as a rock. We both tossed and turned most nights, but luckily we were able to sleep on the beach or by the pool. The beach in front of the Merengue was the best of the 3 RIUs there. Lots of sand and pretty flat. The Bachata beach has gotten smaller since last year so I don't recommend going down that way. The food at the buffets was great! My boyfriend and I are super into fitness and, therefore, really healthy eaters. We were able to find meat and vegetables that weren't soaked in cheese and sauces every meal of every day. No salads the whole vacation! Woohoo! I highly recommend the chicken at the steakhouse. You literally get half a rotisserie chicken and it is melt off the bone good! Overall, if you're looking for a budget friendly vacation, this is the spot to go! The beach and facilities are great. Not 5 stars, but definitely a 3.5-4 star hotel.

Good Hotel.

Pros: It is relatively close to my home, my two kids were free.
Cons: Buffet variety, specially deserts :-)
Location: Puerto Plata is a nice city, beautiful beaches, good people.
The hotel is good but needs to improve in some ways like taking reservations in a-la-carte restaurants, the current system is making a huge line one hour before its opening, needs more a-la-carte restaurants and the buffet needs to have more variety (specially deserts). Also, the rooms need to have more pest controlled, we found some roaches. Overall, I will give a 7.5 out of 10.

Not very tourist friendly

Pros: Good bartenders and that was pretty much it.
Cons: It is poor that you can schedule things in your vacation only to have the tour guides cancel on you the day of the tour. It makes it hard to plan.
Location: Nothing. It was not safe to leave this resort because of its rural setting. Had to take a 20 dollar taxi ride just to reach Puerto Plata.
Resort is to far from everything elevating the price of everything you would want to to outside of the resort. Riu Merengue did not support tourist well as it was dedicated to providing for locals. If it was not for meeting up with a local tour guide named James most of our excursions planned on travelocity would have been canceled and we would have done nothing. We were also not picked up for the airport on a prepaid also.

Will go back!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for five days last month and we loved it. The only con is if your a non smoker you wont like this hotel and the food was great, especially the drinks. Beautiful beach and pool very friendly staff.the entertainment was very good as well which included karaoke. We definitely want to go back but we also are interested at the other two hotels that are connected with this hotel which you can enjoy as well their pool bar and restaurants.

Nice Resort in the Middle of Nowhere

Pros: Free breakfast, Quiet, friendly staff
Cons: Nothing close, rocky beach
The staff was very friendly especially the entertainment staff. The resort grounds are pretty and the accomodations are nice. The food is very good and there is a nice variety. Although I will say we did start to get a bit bored with it after three days. Puerto Plata itself is 20 minutess from the resort once you exit the resort the surrounding areas are like shanty towns. It's not really the kind of place where you would want to wander around outside of the resort on your own because there aren't sidewalks, it's all roads once you exit the resort. There is only one road that leads to this places. Usually when I travel I like to wander and meet locals and I feel like this place was kind of off in the middle of nowhere and made it hard to get in touch with local culture. The distance meant you had to pay taxis to get anywhere and consequently we ended up spending a lot of time in the resort which was kind of boring for us. We did end up getting a couples massage on a cabana on the beach which was very nice and not terribly overpriced. The beach that the resort is on is rocky once you get into the water which makes the swimming experience less than ideal. The water is also not crystal clear or even close to crystal clear. You are definitely getting what you pay for. There's a reason why resorts in Puerto Plata are cheaper than those in Punta Cana.

Never again!

This place is horrible; dirty and dated. Food sucks, I came back with bad food posion. Don't bother going on any horse ride at the beach. Just catch and saddle up one of those humungous cockroaches in the hotel room. Forget about pictures on a web site. AC was barely working.

Riu Merengue - so-so

This resort is the ONLY one I've seen in the Caribbean without a coffee pot in the room. Also, the variety of food is limited, the room air conditioning was not very good, and their internet service was down far more often than it was 'up'. There was really only one restaurant. Though you might assume from the ad that there were more, the second - and only additional - eating place was the pool bar, which was dedicated each evening to a 'reservations only' establishment. The beach was nice, but relatively small. Three resorts - all owned by the same company - surrounded this area of beach. Long walks were not possible because the beach front only encompassed these three hotels. The fitness facility was a good one, but it was shared by the other two resorts, so it was almost always crowded. Because we have been to the DR six times, we have other resorts with which to compare first hand, and based on previous experiences, we would not return to this one.

Our stay at the Riu Merengue

The second day of our vacation was accident filled. My wife slipped out of the shower and onto a more slippery floor. I was unable to pick her up from the floor and called for help. They were very prompt about sending 2 people to help her up off of the floor. We did not find out until we returned home that she has a cracked bone in her foot. I had to complain many times before the hotel supplied a wheel chair. But they would not recognize that she had any injury caused by the hotel. The following day they supplied our room with 3 floor mats. It was a big help.. They tried every way possible to make our stay more comfortable, but the damage was already done.
