The motel room was pleasant, and nicely decorated. We've stayed here 2 or 3 times before. The microwave oven was dirty, and covered with fingerprints on the outside, and encrusted food on the inside. We left the plate out, for housekeeping to notice.
Check-in was unpleasant. The manager/owner(?)/clerk was polite on the surface, but treated us with irrational suspicion. He took my ID and credit card through a window from the outside, and disappeared to another area for around 10 minutes. I had the feeling that he was trying to verify our identities? I can't even imagine why; the room was pre-paid, and we were repeat guests. We had paid in advance with my husband's credit card (same surname and address), but he demanded to have my credit card, which he turned over several times, remarking even that the magnetic stripe was compromised and that "some people do that on purpose". (It was because of that scratched stripe that we paid with my husband's card.)
I've never been looked at so suspiciously by a motel clerk (or anyone in the service industry for that matter) for a prepaid service. I understand this happens to black and brown people more than for someone like me... but honestly, no one who is polite and responsive at a point of service should be made to feel so unwelcome. We will not stay there again. Monterey is known for being a tourist friendly place. I should know, because I'd grown up there, and return and visit frequently for family and other business.
