"Great midtown location; old hotel with a facelift"
Apparently this hotel has been a hotel for a long time. So the core of it is still old (old marble staircases, no central A/C, old elevators). Which gives it a nice sense of history; I kept wondering - who stayed in this room in the 50s? What is super nice is that the staff have lived on with the hotel - the gentleman who checked me in worked there for 20+ years. Which is to say - they are not pretentious, and were genuine and helpful. The room was very nice and comfortable. Being in the heart of midtown, it was loud at night. I would probably stay here again because I like a hotel with character and a story to tell. And I like the modern renovations - it had a cool modern flair built onto an old foundation. I also loved the company they used for soap/shampoo/conditioner - Apotheke, locally sourced from Brooklyn (per the bottle.)

"Great Midtown Location - Walk to Grand Central"
Upon arrival the lobby is pleasing and the staff very welcoming. Nice size rooms for NYC. Breakfast buffet was fair, but acceptable. Central enough to walk to so many locations, including Broadway, Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Grand Central Station. Bed and pillows were comfy. Decor was nice. Dislikes were the 2 elevators were slow. 17 floors and to go down in the morning, you had to wait several times to get on from a lower floor perspective as they filled quickly. Also, there was no fan in the bathroom to keep the steam down while taking a shower. In the summer heat this was a largely missed asset. The bathroom was hot and no ventilation. All in all I give it a 4 overall, with those small details we had to adjust for.

"Disappointment in the city"
The Hotel Pennsylvania at 401 7th Avenue in New York City was a bit disappointing. It is well located, which is excellent to access all tourist points, restaurants, and shopping. The building itself is old, which makes it interesting. I booked my room over a month prior to arriving, however when I arrived I was given a handicap room. Those rooms are great for people with handicap but very uncomfortable for everyone else. There was no bathtub. The shower booth was an open space. The lighting was minimal, impossible to put make-up on. The beds were uncomfortable and made a loud elephant sound, just by breathing too hard. The desk people were not interested in hearing what I had to say and dismissed me by asking me to return at another time. I have always stayed at the Roosevelt (Now the Pennsylvania) and never had a problem. It might be the new management. I give it a two star rating.

The location can't be beat if you are a tourist planning to see a show. You're only a half block from Times Square with all the touristy things you want and right in the middle of the Broadway theaters. The Hotel is nice but cramped compared to the large lobbied hotels in other cities. The staff was great and the view from the rooftop bar can't be beat.
