I usually stay at Bed & Breakfast type places so this was a unique experience. I was not used to have Butler service or doormen. All in all it was nice to see how the other half spend their time in hotels. It was a bit pricier that I was used to.

A gem near Time's Square.

Pros: The calming ambiance and quietness of the rooms. Also, the courteous staff.
Cons: The bathrobes are too heavy and uncomfortable.
Location: Walking distance of all Broadway plays…hundreds of restaurants of all prices and tastes.
This hotel did not disappoint…very upscale but very friendly service staff. Our room was quiet and was serviced twice each day. The room amenities were too numerous to mention. I would definitely recommend this hotel for both business and pleasure trips. Unfortunately our three days were so booked that we did not have time to experience the bar or restaurants, but we plan on returning at another time.

Oustanding Boutique Hotel

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, friendly staff
The Chatwal exceeded my expectations in all respects. The hotel itself lives up to its rating as a 5 star. Every member of the hotel staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. The room was very clean, comfortable, and beautifully decorated with state of the art amenities. The location is outstanding for those interested in attending Broadway shows with Times Square just a few blocks away. No complaints at all.

Despite total power failure, the Chatwal delivers!

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, excellent location, friendly staff
The Chatwal is a beautiful hotel located in Times Square, but slightly off the beaten path so even though you are a few minutes walk from all of the hustle and bustle of the theatre district, you are far enough away to escape. The staff was superb. From the doorman, bellmen, reception, butler (yes, you have a butler!) bartenders, you name it, all of them catered to our every need. The rooms were fabulous and so comfortable. We were in a king suite that had every conceivable luxury you could think of. We especially loved the integrated mirror tv in the bathroom. The beds were supremely comfortable and the room was so dark and quiet that we ended up sleeping until well past 9 every morning! Our only one complaint about the room would be that since the tub/shower is a walk-in, the door did not fully seal and every time we took a shower water would literally flood out of the back onto the floor. We just placed a bunch of towels down and tried not to walk around in socks! The second story bar closed by midnight on the weekdays so get there early if you want to try it out. We went up 2 times and were turned away each night. We did however have the absolute BEST manhattan I've ever had at the lobby bar. We had the unfortunate luck of being there during one of the hottest days of the year (over 100 degrees) when the hotel lost power. We had been walking all day and were trying to get ready for dinner at Daniel so it was a huge bummer since the shower was cold but the room was steamy, we did have emergency lighting (at the time) but no electricity so I had to just take a cold shower, pull my hair back, throw on my dress and try to get out of the room ASAP. It was also raining like crazy! The staff was keeping their composure under ALOT of pressure. Kudos to the doorman who tried his darnedest to grab us a cab. Unfortunately we ended up having to settle for an $80 rickshaw ride. TIP: If you decide to take a rickshaw, make SURE you negotiate and agree on a price before getting in. We thought we had calculated the cost of the ride based on his posted rates, only to find out that in SUPER small print were the terms "rate is per person". Dinner at Daniel was fabulous but when we returned to the hotel, ALL of the power was out, including the emergency lighting. We hurried up and got changed and hit the bar right next to the hotel that seemed to have escaped the power outage somehow. After spending about 3 hours there, the power finally came back and we were back in business! The rest of our stay was perfect, and the hotel even offered us a free night for the next time we come back, and we will definitely be back!

Good -- just not great as hoped

Pros: Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet, great service, welcoming and friendly, excellent location for tourists and business peope
Cons: poor room technology, poorly designed showers, super-expensive mini bar, drafty and bizarre air/heat, quiet but ... thin walls
The Chatwal boasts really excellent, exemplary service from a well-trained, dedicated and enthusiastic staff. The rooms are ultra high-tech, but in this case, that means four calls to the engineer in three days, Japanese-style curtains that never worked, and general confusion on how to get things to operate. The climate-control system is very odd -- we were there on a few quite cold days, and when the heater would reach the right temperature, the air conditioning would come on, blowing cold air when it was 22 degrees outside. There was also a draft coming from the window. The location can't be beat, but that means the views aren't particularly special here (unless you dig looking into another building). All of these minor deficiencies would be fine and bearable if the hotel weren't rather significantly overpriced. We were lucky to get a decent rate through Travelocity, but we'd never be able to or WANT to afford rack rate at this particular hotel, given its flaws. Lastly, we could hear every word of the phone conversations from the woman next door ... though otherwise (oddly) the hotel was quiet. The concierge was terrific, helping us find what we needed and book reservations. The front-desk staff was truly impeccable, the doormen attentive, the "butler" prompt and courteous, housekeeping on top of everything. It's a VERY GOOD hotel, not quite excellent. If you can get a good rate and want a hotel close to all Times Square action and just a three-minute walk from the subway, it's recommended. Let's hope the management addresses the minor flaws, particularly with the not-ready-for-prime-time tech in the rooms (not to mention the showers that look terrific but spill water everywhere).
