We have stayed in this hotel a few times before, the bed is very uncomfortable, mattresses need to be changed, sheets and covers were dirty, the curtains doesn’t close properly, the food is mediocre at the best, the beach is nice. However, you can’t sit in a huge area, preserved for VIPs, you feel that you are treated as a second class citizen. Not worth the money, doubt we will stay again in it.

The property is beautiful. If it is your first time to Hawaii you could spend hours walking around taking pictures. The beach is amazing and watching the mantas after dark is a treat. The staff is very friendly, housekeeping comes twice a day. Parking is my only complaint, valet or self parking is expensive and if you self park you have a fairly long walk.

This is place is great, but nothing is perfect

My wife and I had dinner here a couple of times on previous trips to the Big Island and have since stayed for a week on three occasions.  We have enjoyed the Plumeria and Mt view rooms.  The rooms are large, comfortable and filled with all the amenities we need.  Service is transparent.   There are three principle restaurants with varied results.  Manta (B&D) is pretty good, but you never feel the staff cares.  Hua Tree (L) has a limited menu, but a great staff, and fantastic location.  Monettes (D) is fantastic but pricey.  All have million dollar views.  The resort location on basically a private lagoon is spectacular.  That you can get a four star meal over looking said lagoon is priceless.   There are more expensive resorts on the Big Island, but none have as good a location.   There are some irksome rules at Mauna Kea,ex: the pool area is closed at 6 (seriously?) even the Marriott doesn't do that.  There are several other nice resorts (fairmont, mauna lea and even the Four Seasons(we like to hit the Four Seasons for L&D on trips to and fro Kona and the harbor)) nearby with more great restaurants.  You can stay a week, eat at great restaurants and not dine twice at the same place.  Of course this takes more time and effort than staying at the Mauna Kea.   When school is out there are lots of kids, when school is in the average age is AARP.   If you want a beautiful room, in a beautiful place, with pretty good food this is a great choice.  There are other choices who say NO less, but it will cost you.

Awesome for people with disabilities

Pros: Quiet, more than ada compliant
Cons: No free Internet
While the Mauna Kea was as beautiful as expected, I was surprised at the amount of thought that was given to the details. When we arrived we were greeted with a fresh orchid lei and my husband and my son got kakooee nut leis. We were escorted to the front desk where there were comfortable seats and fresh ICE cold POG juice and a cold cloth to freshen up with. We had also had a guide to orient us to the hotel. I have never before stayed at a hotel that had everything that you might want in the room. I got up early and the rest of my family slept in. I could easily get ready to go to the gym without waking anyone with the high tech lighting system, the compartmentalized bathroom, and the walk in closet. I really had an appreciation for that closet after we arrived at our hotel in Kauai. We couldn't keep anything organized there. My husband is in a wheelchair and they really went out of there way to accomodate those with disabilities. They had a wheelchair available that could run on the sand, a lift into both the pool and the hot tub and easy access to the rest of the resort. Staff was extremely accommodating. They lent my son a set of golf clubs and a cart so my husband could watch him on the driving range - free of charge. The breakfast and the Manta restaurant view was great, however, I was not too impressed with the food in the evenings. All in all a great place to stay with an awesome beach.

Underwhelmed

Cons: Nothing close, No free Internet
I love the beach at the Mauna Kea, with that said the rest of the resort falls short. From the 45 minute wait to check in at 6 pm. To the worst mattress I've ever slept on- it's not worth the price tag. I was one of the youngest guests at the resort- I had issues at the beach bar- was carded repeatedly- which was cute the first couple of times- but I was there a week- the walk to my room got very old. Lots of rules- and extra add ons- my room barely fit a rollaway bed! I recommend visiting to enjoy the best beach, and classic architecture, but stay someplace more accommodating such as the four seasons.

Wedding Stay

Checked into the hotel after it had been completly remodeled. They upgraded my room and it was gorgeous. All new bathrooms and showers. Turn down service every evening. We ate half of our meals at the hotel and explored the Island in our rental car. This hotel has the best beach on the entire quotBig Islandquot Even though they have completly redone the hotel they kept the feel of old Hawaii. Golf at Mauna Kea or Hapuna gives you variety. Wind can be a problem if you play Hapuna so I would pick MK on those days. I like the location because it is a short drive to Kawaihae for diving or fishing and a few small restaurants. 10 min away is Waimea for anything you want and more good places to eat. Keeps you from having to go into Kailua-Kona and all the crowds.
