Kailua-Kona might be a fairly small town by mainland standards, but it's the tourist hub of the Big Island of Hawaii's Western side. It's famous for hosting the Ironman World Championship, but your pursuits during a visit to this historic coastal locale needn't be strenuous. Flights to Kailua-Kona land you minutes from the heart of the town, where you can spend your days snorkeling and sunbathing, strolling around heritage sites, or simply lounging by the pool at your choice among many fine Kailua-Kona hotels.
Ali'i Drive, the main thoroughfare of Kailua-Kona, parallels the coast and is lined with the region's main attractions. At one end is Kailua Pier and a crescent-shaped beach where you can rent snorkel gear, surf boards, paddle boards, and kayaks. From here, you can see the Ahuena Heiau, a temple built by King Kamehameha the Great between 1812 and 1813 that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Minutes away on foot is Hulihee Palace, a summer vacation home used by Hawaiian royalty from 1838 until the early 20th century. Tour the palace and see its fine koa wood furnishings, artifacts from the era, and interesting exhibits in the on-site museum. Opposite the palace is the Mokuaikaua Church, the first Christian church in Hawaii. Some excellent beaches and snorkel spots are within easy reach of hotels near Kailua-Kona, including Kahalu'u Bay and Magic Sands, so called because tides make the beach periodically disappear. Kailua-Kona vacations give you the chance to snorkel or dive at night with massive, harmless manta rays in a handful of spots off the Kona coast, an excursion that's not possible anywhere else on earth. Take to the water, and these remarkable marine creatures will gracefully swim within inches of you. Another Kona-only pursuit is a tour of one of the region's renowned coffee farms.
