Friendly staff and best view in Zihuatanejo

Pros: Everything
Cons: lower rates, lol
Location: best view on the beach
My wife and I had such a great experience at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo that we are already planning a return trip with our kids. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and kind. We upgraded our room to a beach suite with the help of Viri at the front desk, alway with a beautiful warm smile. The restaurant staff, Luis,Salvador, Alfredo and Felipe who has been at this location for 36 years, were so kind and helpful. Even the grounds keeper,Isreal, who we saw carting away fresh coconuts he had just plucked from the property, when we asked what his plans were for them offered my wife and I fresh coconut juice which we happly accept. We took the cooking class offered at the hotel and it was a great experience. Chef Paco and Juan were amazing. They really made this trip special. We were treated like VIPs in the cooking class. The big bonus was that this is turtle season. When I found out that turtles were coming on the beach to lay eggs I went nuts. We told the staff to please call us at any hour if they see a turtle. The security guard at night, who had a very unique name, did notify the front desk to call us and it was an experience that I will never forget. This hotel encourages the protection of the eggs by make suring the eggs are reburied on their property so they are guarded and ensuring the future well being of these turtles. I had never written a review after any of my trips before but this one I just couldn't wait.

Beautiful hotel in Zihua

We just returned home from our Honeymoon trip to Zihuatenejo. The hotel was awesome. Grounds were immaculate. The Lagoon Suite (LS8) was perfect in every way. The coffee service delivery each morning was such a treat and the coffee...mmmmm....absolutely wonderful. The staff was helpful and attentive. The food at the Viceroy was outstanding. The beach in front of the hotel was combed and cleaned each morning.

A gorgeous property but with some pitfalls

Pros: Quiet
Cons: Nothing close, No free Internet, Poor breakfast
The room was beautiful and the landscaping gorgeous. The Viceroy sits on a prime piece of beach real estate with a spectacular view of the bay. The food at the hotel restaurant however is average and the prices astronomically high. For example $62 for a surf and turf meal for one, without beverages. Upon departure from the hotel we were apprized of an additional 10% service charge per day for grounds keeping. I recommend eating elsewhere, you'll save a bundle and have a much better experience. Thursday night in Zihuatenejo is Pozole night throughout the village and I recommend visiting the Santa Prisca restaurant. Visit the Coconuts restaurant, El Mediterraneo, and save some money for an evening at Tentaciones. Use the buses and taxis to get around they're much cheaper than Renting a car and equally as accessible. Take a sunset cruise on the catamaran Picante. Book your excursions in advance yourself on the Internet You'll save money time and patience from dealing with undependable tour guides.

AUSOME!

Fantastic friendly service and beautiful beach. If I were rich Id go every year. The meal plan is the best way to go for a late breakfast and dinner.Well worth it because the food is great. We saved by going to the little store down the beach and buying beer there. At the tides they are $* each. Our room was wonderful and very cllean. The lagoon and all the lush plants make this resort so pretty.

Didn't meet my expectations for the category of hotel

There seem to be 3 eras of construction - 1950s motel looking 2-story, 80's 1-2 story Spanish adobe with bright yellow interiors, and new modern spacious rooms with light neutral tones. We got the more modern and really enjoyed it - large, nice bathroom, pretty tile and stone work, nice private pool in front of sliding doors that the bed faced and small very private patio. Beach front and beach furnitue were nice. Service was nice - helpful, but not pushy or in your way. But, overall upkeep was "okay" and staffing and amenities were slim. Couldn't ever find a towel on the beach or at the pool. Pools were small. Beach front wasn't raked regularly (and needed it). Products in the bath were of poor quality and had an offensive perfume smell. Felt nickle-d and dimed for water - a no name brand for $5. Food was of superior quality. But, food prices were outrageous! "Spa" only offers nail services and massages, no lockers or way to spend the day. Taxi into town was cheap, quick, and convenient. I was reminded every morning that we weren't on the breakfast included plan. Even though we spent $50+ for breakfast each morning, this statement made me feel second class, when heard repeatedly. This hotel is known by the locals as being "the best" or "the nicest", so I sometimes felt like it was assumed that we should pay more and, at times, were charged more. I didn't feel like the price differential was worth it, nor did it live up to the raves seen here and other travel guidebooks and ratings. Definitely not in the category of a Four Seasons or Ritz or other premiere hotel brand.

The Tides - Paradise!!

It was my fiance's 40th birthday so we wanted to travel somewhere nice and relaxing. I searched the internet and found The Tides...based on the pictures, this was the place. We actually weren't expecting it to look as good as the pictures we'd seen, but it turned out it was even more beautiful in person--it is amazing. You feel like you are in paradise. We had a Lagoon Suite with our own private infinity plunge pool that was less than a minute walk from the gorgeous beach...and since it was the off-season, it was almost like having the place to ourselves. The suite was fabulous, the main infinity pool was fabulous (and for adults only!) and the service was fabulous. There were a few teenagers and smaller children, but for the most part, the guests were all adults, which we also found very, very nice. The only downside was the cost of the food and drinks at the resort itself; however, there are many restaurants along the beach in either direction from the resort--you literally never need to leave Playa La Ropa. Plus, the cab ride to downtown Zihua is only a few dollars. The resort even offers free Wi-Fi which was very nice! I have never had so much fun and cannot wait to go back. We were planning to have our destination wedding next spring in the Caribbean, but now I think it's a distinct possibility that it will now be at The Tides.

Beautiful setting and incredible service

The staff and ground at this hotel are absolutely incredible. The beach was well kept and their dine anywhere policy was very nice. I agree with other posters about the prices (a bit high in comparison to other locations). We took advantage of the spa and enjoyed a massage on the beach - truly incredible. Pro: Service was prompt and friendly. Put plainly it was the best we have ever enjoyed at a hotel. Everyone spoke English and was eager to help me learn bits of Spanish. Grounds were beautiful with flowers everywhere. Mixed drinks were great and the selection was incredible (150 different types of tequila?!). Finally the beach... raked each day with the perfect mix of palms and lounge chairs. The staff would stealthily set up a dining table directly behind your lounge chair whenever you requested a menu. Cons: The bed was one of those NASA foam things (not very comfortable for a whimp like me used to sleeping on a pillow top). There were some frogs in the lagoon that kept us up with their singing (stay was during mid June). Initially locating the place was difficult (small sign and lack of decent map/directions). As with any hotel, the cost of meals and drink was high. Finally the morning coffee was terrible as it was instant. I'd recommend walking to the open air bar to order an espresso with some hot water. Recommendation: Enjoy a massage on the beach! Enjoy dinner on the beach (a great romantic setting with tiki torches. Finally - Rent a car and see the town. There were some incredible restaurants around the small fish market and the weekend festivals were great to see.
