Loved the ocean view balcony

I loved that this hotel was walking distance to everything. The hotel staff was very kind and accommodating, allowing us to store our luggage before check in and after check out. Paying a little extra to have a room with an ocean view balcony was so worth it. Loved getting the extra fresh air at night too. My son and I visited for his birthday and had an amazing and fun mini vacation.

Beautiful Hotel!

What a beautiful hotel on an amazing island. We stayed for only one night, and enjoyed the hotel immensely.

Quality of stay depends on your room

Pros: The deck is nice for views. The bed is comfortable. Good Wifi. There is an elevator and heat/air conditioning wall units. Bathrooms have hair dryers
Cons: Lock the 6th floor deck before 9am/after 8pm. Shuttle service to/from ferry to comp the steep hill. Window Screens and windows that open all the way.
Location: zip line, self tour golf carts, diving, snorkle, boat rentals, kayaking, parasailing, casino tour, art museum, botanical garden, golf, arcade, spa
I was checked in on the 5th floor under the 6th floor deck, which was a disaster. They must not lock the door outside the posted hours of 9am to 8pm because people on the deck woke me up after 11pm and before 6:30 am. The sign for the hours is small and i don't know if they even close the door. Of course people only care about their own interests so if you don't lock it, people will help themselves. It was so bad that I called the front desk and said I needed another room for the rest of my stay.. It took three requests for them to agree to do so. At first they said they would tell them to "keep it down". People were just walking up there and moving chairs so that is not a solution. I also believe I called at 8am-ish so it was before the posted hours it was even open, so shows how much they do not enforce that. So avoid rooms 501 or 511 with the decks. Once they did put me in another room, my stay was very pleasant. The hotel is up a steep hill but walking never hurt anyone. You can walk it from the ferry if you have minimal rolling luggage. The only other downside was on the morning of check out the maid walked in on me...despite the do not disturb sign....while I was dressing. So bad communication it would seem among the staff. There is an elevator. They offer coffee 7-10, I think although I did not avail myself of that opportunity. Whirlpool tubs seems ridiculous on an island with a water shortage.

Sandra, Thanks for your input. The patio is to be closed at 9 pm and open at 8am. Will look into that. As far as moving we were fairly full so may have taken some doing but glad we found you a better spot.

Good hotel

Overall good hotel for the weekend. Not far from the strip and everything is within walking distance. The room was a bit small and the room they have to store luggage before check in and after you check out is real small as well.

Great Stay

Pros: We loved the location slightly up the hill with a view of the town. And the terrace, as others have mentioned is a fantastic hang out.
Cons: No breakfast offered and no frig in the room. It is always nice to store bottled water or whatever, to stay cool.
Location: Although it is a little up hill, it is close to the museum, grocery store, at the same time, out of the bustle of down town.
We were in Avalon to just relax for 2 nights. Our first time to Catalina Island and it was perfect. Avalon is small enough to walk anywhere you really need to go, especially if you are there to relax. We booked this place based on reading ratings and photos and price. We were not disappointed. The rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable.

Out of the way, but nice

The hotel staff is awesome. Although the hotel it's a bit older, it has been kept up nicely. Take a city bus right to the door so you don't have to climb up the hill. The 6th floor has a nice landing overlooking the bay.
