FIRST, We booked Hotel Plaza Caribe through Travelocity. We paid in advance for a two week stay. Upon arrival, the receptionist notified us that there would be an additional $27 (USD) charge per night for a “sanitation fee,” which was not mentioned anywhere on their website or Travelocity at the time of booking. We argued that we could not afford to pay almost double what we were quoted for two weeks. After looking up the “government enforced sanitation fee” later, we discovered that they should not charge $27 USD, which would be around 540 pesos, but that it should be 27 PESOS per night instead, if they charge a sanitation fee at all. So the hotel was obviously trying to take advantage of us as “tourists” and charge way more than we should be required to pay. We also checked with other hotels in the area and none were charging this “sanitation fee” other than Hotel Plaza Caribe. SECONDLY, The room had black mold growing down the walls, through the AC vents, and the halls wreaked of mold. We did not feel comfortable spending a night here.

I suppose if you wore blinders with limited view 1 may book here. I wasn't expecting a 4 star hotel. However this was comparable to a poorly kept motel off some back road. The staff had difficulty checking me in & out. My 1st room was on the ground level & part of the older section of the hotel. The smell of mold was so strong I instantly had a headache & requested another room. We were given another room that was on the 2nd floor & was just normal musty expected in an older hotel in a humid climate. However the walls had feet & shoe marks all over them by the side of the bed & the headboard. It added to the over all feeling of being in a pay hourly sort of place if you get my drift. The ac was cool but awfully musty & that is about the only positive I could say. In the booking description & pictures the rooms shown are in the newer section & I suspect when you book through a 3rd party discounted site that the hotel gives you a room in the old section which isn't close to what they show other then it has 2 beds... The phone in room mentioned in description doesn't tell you that you have to put up a deposit of a 1,0000 pesos to even be able to dial. The safe in the room, well they are broke so you have to pay for a safe up at the front desk. Our 1st day while we were there we had a maid on 2 occasions use their master key to enter despite us there, we left & bought another hotel. The grounds are in poor shape & the parrots are in decrepted old cages due to avery dilapitation

Cancun ADO location and good food too!

Pros: Staff excellent. Rooms clean and dining is good as well.
Cons: Facilities are older... could use a "makeover".
Location: Close to ADO station. Looks like there is lots of shopping in the neighborhood, but we get to the hotel and don't leave until time for our bus.
We have stayed at Hotel Plaza Caribe several times now when flying into Cancun airport... and returning home to Merida on the ADO. The hotel is across the street from the ADO station and the staff graciously assists us with our luggage. This trip two of us had four very large bags. We have eaten breakfast and dinner in the restaurant, enjoying local cuisine and tasty margaritas. Although facilities are older, the room was clean and the beds were comfy. Air conditioning has worked each time (very important) and the price is good. We will continue to use this hotel when we have a bus ride in our future!

BIG concert until 2 in the morning and: trouble

Pros: Pool, the staff, restaurant, peacocks, the room except for shower arrangement
Cons: Please see above - pretty obvious
Location: Not a great location unless you need the bus across the street which we did. Too far from the beaches and a kind of dicey area.
So the people in the hotel were great and so was the pool and the restaurant was fantastic including the service. The room on the 2nd night when I had a roommate was problematic because of how the shower was situated. No privacy. No door between the room and the shower. No way to enter the shower without taking off clothes in front of roommate. (We had just met and were starting a tour of two weeks together.) BIG problem was the LOUD concert with tape recorded music and tons of dancers and tons of audience members just outside of our rooms until 2 in the morning. 2nd BIG problem was that we slept for two hours and were awakened at 4 am by very loud, scary voices even closer to right outside our room. We don't know enough Spanish to be sure of what was happening. We think someone was being evicted from the hotel. Maybe someone who didn't have a room there but got past the alarm system and came into our wing. AT least six of us were hearing this and couldn't sleep too much the rest of the night. This was, for most of us, our first night in Mexico. Many of us had never been to MX before. I had been but it didn't make it any less yucky!
