No Consideration for Extenuating Circumstances

Pros: Beautiful property
Cons: Staff to guest ratio is too disparate. Long waits for service. Food was average at best. Customer service is deplorable.
Location: Stay at a nearby hotel that values its customers.
I had booked a four night stay, but unfortunately, 8-hours after my arrival, I received a call that my mother had passed away and was forced to return home. The car service and airline I booked through provided refunds, but the Riu hotel was unwilling to consider my situation or even speak with me. I provided all of the appropriate documentation to Travelocity and they attempted to get a refund/credit for weeks without success. Travelocity even provided me with a voucher after the ordeal because they understood my situation and were just as frustrated with the result. Numerous emails from me to Riu Support, requesting that I simply have an opportunity to speak to someone, were responded to with a canned response. My last email to the Riu, which requested an escalation, went unanswered. It's also important to note that I even purchased insurance for the trip, but I learned that insurance only applies until you depart. Once you've arrived, insurance does not cover any issues that may occur. Keep that in mind next time you consider insurance for your trip. Consider a third party insurer.

16 Year Anniversary

Pros: Loved the staff and food! The staff was always busy keeping the hotel clean, they truly love their guest I believe.
Cons: The rooms could use some updating
Location: The beach was amazing, clean and hotel was very close to outdoor eateries and shopping.
We traveled to Aruba for our 16th year anniversary and chose to stay at the Riu, as it was the top rated adult only hotel in Aruba by Travelocity. When we arrived at the Riu, we were welcomed immediately with a very cheerful and friendly young lady who checked us in quickly and flawlessly. Upon arriving to our floor, we noticed the hallway to our room smelled a little musty, but fortunately our room did not, as it was very clean and orderly and the size was great! We had an Oceanside suite in which we could see the ocean and the beautiful pools below but could also see the roof of the casino immediately below us, hence the view could've been better. Surprised to see 4X750ml of alcohol for our use in which we used... I will explain. The only al a carte restaurant we ate at was Rimini, the Italian restaurant and it was excellent, attentive staff and great food, we highly recommend. Poolside bars were fun but we found out frozen drinks were NA so that's where alcohol in our room came into play, we would take drinks to room to our "fix them up" lol. The lobby bar served great martinis, you must ask for brand name of alcohol otherwise you get house stuff. Jerry, one of the amazing bartenders, was excellent and became a friend fast! He recommended a local restaurant, Zeerovers, on the way to Baby Beach, and it was wonderful. The entire staff was very attentive, friendly and appeared to truly love their job! We will be back for sure, it was overall a great experience! Thanks!!

Great all-inclusive experience

Pros: Loved oceanfront room!
Cons: Downside of oceanfront room was proximity to parties. Music was very loud. Made sleeping difficult. We would like to have opened doors to patio. Noisy
Restaurants offered variety of foods. Some meats were dry. Staff was friendly, helpful when needed.

Perfect Location and Resort

Pros: All inclusive, even alcohol and refrigerator in room. Location is perfect for everything. Swim up pool bar. Adults only areas. Friendly people.
Cons: No drink service at the beach. Refrigerator was not refilled until we asked. Did not receive a schedule of events in the hotel (time /name of event)
Location: Located right on the beach with a nice little boardwalk going in either direction. Walk to shopping, restaurants and bars one block away.
You do have to put your towel on a beach/pool chair early if you want a spot that gives you sun/shade - if you are not picky, then you don't need to do it. We put ours down before going to breakfast and were able to get a cabana-type of chair on the beach. We rented a car for a day and toured the island at our own leisure - went to the lighthouse and sand dunes, etc; stopped at hotel for lunch on the way back then continued on to climb the hooiberg mountain and see all the sights. Driving was easy, just yield right of way when you are unsure. We went to DePalm Island which was easily worth the small cost - snorkeling, banana boat, waterpark, drinks, breakfast and lunch included (not as good as the hotel, but it did the trick), zip lining if you are a first timer it is a good place to try it out, basketball; then there are additional things you can do for an extra charge - we did the SeaTrek and it was worth 100 times more than we paid (50) - was really a cool experience for non-scuba people, easily done for elderly or younger kids too (not strenuous). We walked down the street each night and went to various shops and clubs. We went to Gusto and it was a young crowd (we are 45-50) but they played good music and there was a little dancing. Senior Frogs appeared closed :( Sopranos Piano Bar was Superb !! Most places have a happy hour where drinks are half price. Hard Rock Cafe charged us an extra 15% because we only ordered one drink a piece and didn't tell us :(

Hotel was ok. Very dated, bath tub paint peeling. Hotel smelled old and moldy in hall ways. Not much entertainment going on at the hotel either. It was ok, but I wouldn't recommend it nor would I stay there again.

Cons: consideration may be given to the food staff wearing disposable gloves during food preparation and serving.
we were well taken care of from the moment we walked thru the doors on arriving until we reluctantly walked out at the end of our stay. the hotel staff went above and beyond to fulfill any and all requests we made. when we first arrived, there was a couple of minor issues that were rectified promptly upon our request. our villa suite was comfortable and cozy. the only 2 drawbacks (and this is just me nitpicking) were no elevator service to the villas, and no ice machine on each floor of the villas (we were on the top floor so walking down and back up 2 flights to get ice was a bit much...i know, i know, it's only 2 flights...but...lol). the food was varied and plentiful, the service staff was simply OUTSTANDING!!! we did not encounter anyone during our stay that did not greet us with a smile and made sure to ask if there was anything we needed. my wife requested a special arrangement as a surprise for me since it was our anniversary, and the hotel management staff stepped up and followed through to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. the management staff was visible throughout our stay, be it in the restaurants, walking through the lobby, or just stopping by at the various pools to make sure all was well. all i can say is that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we were already recommending the RIU to others. thanks for a great stay!!!
