"Nice hotel with dive shop."
Snorkelling and diving were not the best. Water was too rough to snorkel 7 out of 8 days and so visibility for diving was not good. Hotel was very nice. Food was average. Expect to walk a lot. Saw monkeys in the trees on resort grounds near a cenote. Awesome sighting. Great pools and lazy river. Very friendly staff.

"Very nice, clean, well-kept resort. "
Very nice experience. Rooms were very clean and well-maintained; we felt safe at this resort. Pool areas, grounds, and restaurants were very well managed and maintained also. Excellent food in all buffets; great drink service.

"HUGE Resort not our style."
We enjoyed our stay but it is a HUGE resort broken up into 4 campuses (Akumal, Coba, Tulum and Sia Kaan). Everything was clean, well manicured grounds and in great condition however it was too large for our taste. Everyone was adequately accommodating but it lacked the personal touch. We liked that we could go to a Adult Only area. The food was passable but not delicious like other resorts we've been to.

"All-inclusive resort, great for families"
The place is quite spread out so you only feel the crowds in the large dining areas, one of the pools, or by the beach. Lots to do including lying around the pools, drinking, watching the people, exploring. The spa is terrific, water activities include sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or paying for scuba trips. There are also organized activities every day at all the pools, some for kids, some for all including dancing, exercising, trivia contests, Spanish lessons, etc. You can take trips into Playa Del Carmen or visit some Mayan ruins, but we never went in the 8 days there, except for one afternoon in PdC. The restaurant choices are extensive, and some are better than others depending upon your taste. Food is plentiful, and the desserts will tighten your clothes if you are not careful. The staff is caring and helpful, the quality of the accommodations are top class, and the iguanas are pretty laid back. We met many people who had returned 3, 6, even 8 times. We could end up one of those...

"Grand Bahia Tulum"
We went with two families. We requested to stay close together, and sent that request many months in advance.. Upon arrival we found to be on opposite sides of the complex. Second issue we had was when requesting the Japanese restaurant you need to specify the Hibachi table which we were not informed of.. To our surprise with 11 people when we showed up we were Ala-carte. Other than the two issues, We had a great stay, complex is beautiful, beaches are wonderful , food was very good, and the kids loved it. We did two excursion, one with Ocean tours through the complex for $35 each we went to Akumul swam with the turtles, swam in the cenotes caverns, which also included on a separate day a tour of the Mathis Jewelry factory and Tequila shop and a 2 hour trip to Playa De Carmen. Well worth the money. The night life we had a good time, and there was always something to do. I would go back here again for a family vacation.

The Underwater World: Caves, Reefs, and More

Officially founded as a town for scuba divers, resorts near Akumal provide access to unbelievably clear waters and secluded palm-lined beaches. The word "Akumal" means "Land of the Turtles" in the Mayan language. Its exuberant natural landscapes—both above water and below—means that the surrounding environment and wildlife is Akumal's No. 1 attraction. The town's dive shops can help underwater enthusiasts of all levels witness Akumal's finest natural gems firsthand. There are quite a few dive shops from which to choose, too: some independent and some associated with hotels in Akumal.

Whether you choose to snorkel, dive, or even cave dive, you'll be looking in on a whole new world. Snorkelers can enjoy colorful reefs teeming with vibrant fish, while cave divers can explore hundreds of miles of cenotes (deep limestone pools) leading to a network of underground rivers with the area's foremost experts. Because Akumal was founded by deep water explorers, it's one of the friendliest places in the hemisphere for those new to the underwater world.
