"Fantastic location on Michigan Avenue"
The hotel has great character and old-world charm. The bathroom was clean and modern. The room was very small but I wasn't there much so I didn't mind. The carpet was old, the floor was lumpy and uneven, my pillow case was stained and the "white" towels were dingy. It was only a block from my meeting location so I didn't mind it but I wouldn't pick this hotel for a vacation. The desk was directly under the television so I couldn't have it on while I sat at the desk. I used my own private hotspot so I don't know how well the internet worked.

"Perfect hotel for my conference stay in Chicago..."
I stayed here during the Microsoft Ignite conference last week. While it wasn't an "official" conference hotel, it was close to the other hotel shuttles, and nothing was lost in the process. The rooms are a bit on the small side, but they have a nice layout. You can even store your luggage at the desk to maximize the room space. The desk is comfortable for working, and they have outlets in all the right places. The staff was EXTREMELY friendly and helpful, and I loved that the Elephant and Castle pub was attached to the hotel. The chilled purified water (and bottles) available on every floor was a welcome site after a full day, and THANK YOU for having thermostats that turned down VERY low (like below 55!) I like sleeping in colder rooms, and that was perfect.

"Good location."
Very nice staff but was disappointed that we only had one bath towel, one hand towel and one bar of soap for the two of us. My brother and his wife checked in the next day and same thing in their room. We were able to easily get more towels but they had to request them at least 3 times! Overall, it was a good stay.

"Very nice place to stay near downtown"
Within walking distance of Union Station and the Willis tower, beautiful new hotel with very efficient service. The breakfast buffet is probably the best one I've ever had from a hotel. I would definitely stay there again if I'm in the area.

Always a pleasure to stay here. Rooms are a bit small but the lobby is so beautiful. The location is so convenient to everything we wanted to do. It is an easy walk from Union Station and close to theatres. We will be back.

"Hard to find"
The only problem is that it was hard to find. It is 2 hotels in the same building and the outdoor sign was just a overhang with the "River Hotel" hard to find on the overhang. Otherwise great hotel in the middle of Chicago across the river from Michigan Ave. Would have stayed longer but just in town for the night for a concert at Wrigley Field. Great access to the train.

"Great Location & Nice Staff Members"
I was extremely pleased with the location, cleanliness, comfort, and staff customer service of this hotel. This was my first time to Chicago and, of course, you can only rely on reviews and photos of hotels, restaurants, etc. The woman who checked me in and the gentleman who checked me out were very nice and welcoming; I did not have any issues with the staff whatsoever. This hotel is close to a lot of Chicago's "to-do's". I did not rent a car, so I walked and took a Lyft everywhere. Everywhere I needed to go, besides breweries and Wrigley Field, were less than 2 miles away. One morning I walked from the hotel to breakfast at the Bongo room 2 blocks away then up State Street to the Trump Tower (just to give you some perspective). The Essex Inn is in S. Michigan Avenue and if you walk North on Michigan Avenue, in less than a mile you will get to Buckingham Fountain and Lake Michigan. If you walked another half mile, you will get to Millennium Park (Cloud Gate/"The Bean", Interactive Face Fountains, etc.). My only complaint (VERY MINOR) is the temperature of my room. You are unable to adjust the air conditioning, as there is no thermostat. So at night the room got really cold. I had no real issue with it because the weather outside was so hot that it felt nice walking into the room and I always run warm anyway. I had an exceptionally nice stay at this hotel. I would not mind staying here again.

"Incredible hotel and staff!!!"
I can't believe this hotel was part of a deal! They have the nicest and most accommodating staff I've ever been around. There wasn't a single person who didn't bend over backwards to be helpful or kind! The rooms were also amazing. Everything you could ask for. If you like flying Virgin, and who doesn't, you'll love the hotel!
