Roaming Gnome meets girl. Girl meets Roaming Gnome. It’s summer love at first sight. But where to take such a well-traveled, beautiful blogger for a one-of-a-kind first date? Look no further than San Diego, one of the most “Roam”antic summer destinations ever, with dates to suit lovebirds of every shape and size. Follow blogger Kiersten Rich, a.k.a. The Blonde Abroad, as the Travelocity Roaming Gnome takes her on a whirlwind date-a-thon around “America’s Finest City,” San Diego, California.
Fun Dates: Laugh together, love together – What’s more romantic than the San Diego County Fair? Win your date a fluffy prize, share some cotton candy and cuddle up on the giant Ferris wheel! Or let the call of the wild be heard at SeaWorld, or the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. They’re all perfect places to have fun, explore and feel like a kid again.
Outdoor Dates: Ignite that romance with a little help from Mother Nature – Rent a beach bicycle and ride down the boardwalk in Mission Beach or rent a kayak from OEX Dive & Kayak in La Jolla for a date that embraces beautiful San Diego beach culture. Coronado Island is THE romantic getaway of the summer. Stay at the Hotel del Coronado for a luxurious beachfront getaway. Hiking spots like Torrey Pines and Mission Trails Regional Park are also gorgeous spots for a workout where you can enjoy quiet conversation. If you really want to test your adventurous spirit check out the Torrey Pines Gliderport and let your love soar over the cliffs of La Jolla. You can also get your sea legs together and spend the daylearning to sail! The options for fun in the sun are endless.
Foodie Dates: Wine, dine and dance the night away – Skip the old fashioned “dinner and a movie date” and do something uniquely San Diego! Restaurants like Brooklyn Girl Eatery in Mission Hills offer local fare and unique libations while gastropubs like Toronado San Diego in North Park offer a miraculous selection of specialty and locally crafted beers. The San Diego Gaslamp Quarter is packed with incredible restaurants, bars, lounges and dance clubs. Stop at Syrah for a wine bar like you’ve never seen or East Village Tavern for a big kid bowling experience. Not ready to end the night after dinner? Go out dancing together! Voyeur, Fluxx, Stingaree and Ivy are all top rated clubs in the Gaslamp Quarter.
“Like a Local” Dates: Do as the San Diegan’s do! – Whether you’re a local or not, getting familiar with the history of San Diego and getting involved in the community is romantic indeed. In fact, if you are a local you might consider exploring your own backyard a bit more! Balboa Park is one of my favorite places in San Diego with impressive gardens and tons of museums. Even if you’re not a local,Old Town San Diego is a fun and yummy place to checkout, with the BEST Mexican food in the city. Old Town’s “Taco Tuesday” is a weekly holiday for locals. Grab some cheap and fresh eats and sip on some margaritas! For a date you’ll never forget, help out a local organization like the San Diego Food Bank or the Red Cross and do something for those in need. Nothing makes my heart pound like a Gnome who gives back!
