Last year’s Comicpalooza was said to be the “best con ever.” In fact, it was so successful that Comicpalooza 2014 has expanded to four days, taking place over the Memorial Day weekend this year on May 23 -26. Programming and entertainment offerings have increased and will include more than 1,000 hours of panels, Q&As, workshops, games, concerts, sports matches, demonstrations, performances and lots more. This year is likely to even surpass the success of 2013 with an unforgettable lineup of guests and four days of endless fun.
The very first Comicpalooza was held in 2008, corresponding with the release of The Dark Knight, and included just a handful of tables with local comic book artists in the one-day event. Two years later it became a three-day convention that was not only focused on comics but was expanded to include science fiction, fantasy, horror, steam punk and other genres.
Fast-forward to 2013 — the event attracted 20,700 attendees, nearly double that of the previous year! Guests included the stars of the supernatural drama series Lost Girl, Kris Holden-Ried and Zoie Palmer, who were part of a Q&A panel and signed autographs in addition to taking pictures with fans. Of course, Doctor Who was also well represented, including an appearance by the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, and Ian McNeice.
Even if you’re not a fan of comics, there is plenty to see and do here, including exhibitions featuring everything from comedy shows to roller derby, belly dancing, and wrestling matches, which are held all weekend long. In addition to celeb panel discussions, you can learn about filmmaking on a budget, ballroom dancing or even voice acting.
Vendors of all types will be there too, hawking t-shirts galore, gaming supplies, vintage toys and just about anything related to pop culture that you can think of. If you’ve been dreaming of a Dalek tea cozy or even life-size Uruk-hai armor, this is the place to find it.
Although the full guest list for 2014 has not yet been revealed, there have been a number of announcements sparking plenty of excitement, with the word on the street that this event is definitely a must to attend. John Barrowman was the fourth Doctor Who guest to be announced. He was so popular on the series that he was given his own show, Torchwood, but these days he can be seen on the new CW show, Arrow, based on the DC Comic series. Paul McGann, who played the eighth Doctor on the BBC series, has also been revealed as a 2014 guest. He will join the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, as well as Colin Baker, who spent 1983 through 1986 playing the sixth time- and space-
Mike Mignola, creator of Hell Boy, will be at Comicpalooza 2014 along with James Marsters, best known for playing the role of Spike, the cult favorite punk-goth vampire on TV’s Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Attendees can also look forward to the first ever Cross-Time Dalek Races! If you know what the Daleks are, you know you’ve got to be there for that.
Of course there are many more announcements to come, including the full list of guests, gaming, performers, competitions and a complete schedule.
Houston is the place to be for pop culture fans this Memorial Day weekend!
