"Best choice in Waikoloa"

4.0/5

Tue, May 21, 2013 Portland, Oregon

I find it funny that a reviewer "booked a mountain view" room in Hawaii and then had an issue with their flat screen TV. All that says to me is that they were going to Hawaii, cheaply, to watch TV. Yes this Marriott is in need of a facelift, but if you are going to Hawaii to play in the sand and ocean, you could not ask for a better location. In the Waikoloa area you have three choices; The Hilton with hundreds and hundreds of guests and very little connection to the beach and ocean, a very expensive condo rental (which if you can afford it, is well worth every penny), and the Marriott. This hotel has friendly staff, is steps from the beach, a pool that is not only well kept, but well staffed, and one of the most authentic Luau's we have been to. Do yourself a favor and book an ocean view (forget the TV), and marvel at the beauty that is Hawaii.

"Perfect stay, comfortable bed!"

5.0/5

Tue, May 21, 2013 Tucson, AZ

The most comfortable bed of our vacation, again! (We stayed here last fall, and as we pulled up the sheets to check what brand mattress this time, we remembered doing the same thing our last visit). This time they gave a lei greeting when we checked in, a nice touch, and we were upgraded to an ocean view room. We love the layout of the room, the bed facing the windows, the dressing area and bath kind of hidden behind a window that lets some natural light back there. Just a very relaxing set up, and a quiet room. No wifi in the room but there is in the lobby, where you can enjoy comfy seating and great views. Also found that if you set AC fan to low instead of Auto when showering or at night, it helps keep the air circulating and room cooler. King's Shops is across the street for shopping and dining (can recommend Island Fish and Chips, Merriman's and Roy's) and Queen's Marketplace just a block further has a well stocked market, more restaurants (the Thai place was good) and shops. The historic minded can take a hike around a nearby petroglyphs area, or the ancient fish ponds right in front of the resort. And walks along the beach are not to be missed, watch the canoe club head out for practice runs, maybe cheer on local swimmers in an ocean swim (250 of them early one morning). Relax! It is easy to do at this low key resort.

"A Bit Disappointed!"

3.0/5

Tue, May 21, 2013 Costa Mesa, California, United States

The atmosphere and view was beautiful. I had an ocean front view which was very nice. I was disappointed with the service and staff. Typically, hotels are welcoming, cheerful and friendly from the moment you arrive at the valet. There was not much of the "Aloha spirit at this hotel. Some of the staff seemed to be having a bad day. The most friendliest, cheerful, helpful and courteous were the gentlemen in the "Valet" and the "Bell men" which I tipped very handsomely. Room service menu was not great compared to the pool menu. We ordered dinner the first evening. Room service forgot the french fries for the kids and ketchup. We waited another 20 minutes to receive it and she apologized by bringing another plate of fries. Sweet potato cheesecake overpriced at $11.00 and not very tasty. I called for table pickup. I was told to roll it out in the hallway. I had to figure out how to drop the sides and then pile the plates up just to fit it out the door. It sat there until 12:00 noon the next day. Breakfast buffet quality was better than my last visit 2 years ago. Staff was a bit more friendly and courteous. The pool was nice but, service again was ok. Staff not friendly again. We spend alot of money to travel to this island several times a year. Guests should feel welcomed, when staff are happy with their jobs, that energy flows to the guests. Then guests feel a bit more welcomed. When I compare this hotel to Mauna Lani Bay Resort, Hapuna Prince and Four Seasons where I typically stay. I am very disappointed being that this is Hawaii. Paradise!. I want to also comment that I am a member and I have stayed at many Marriotts in California and Courtyards where staff are alot more friendly than this hotel.

"Disappointing Resort"

3.0/5

Mon, May 20, 2013

The hotel is tired and needs updating. We booked online for a "mountain view", flat screen TV on the confirmation. We got a musty room overlooking a sidewalk. An old TV from 15 years ago. It was sorely in need of updating. After complaining we were switched to another room which was a bit better. The buffet was expensive, tasteless and crowded. The beach was quite attractive. I don't recommend this hotel unless you can't find anything better.

"Relaxing"

4.0/5

Fri, May 17, 2013

Stayed here with my wife on honeymoon. We do not drive which obviously limited our trip, but we knew this in advance. The hotel grounds are clean and well kept, nice pool area, and just a few metres from the ocean. A short walk to where turtles can be found relaxing in the afternoon sun. Also a short walk to other parts of the resort(shops, restaurants, Hilton hotel) or $2 bus ride. Main downside (about all waikoloa not just this hotel) is that the food wasn't great, given the price, even the food sourced locally. Vegetarians are likely to find it challenging.
