My wife and I have been going to Riu hotels now for the past six years, five of which was in the Dominican Republic. This is the first time I have given less than a 5 in Trip Adviser. If it were just for the waiters, bar tenders and cleaning staff, I would give more than a 5 if it were possible. They are exceptional; They work long hours for 12 days at a time and only get 3 days off, for poor pay. I can not praise them enough. The problem is with management. We booked a standard room which is a junior suite at the Riu Palace Punta Cana, There is only one price for these rooms and so we asked to have the same room as last year or one nearby. When we got there we could not have been put further away, they put us at the back of the hotel facing the Bambu kitchen roof, and so without even going in the room we marched straight down to reception and asked why we had not been put where we requested. Their answer was that they were superior rooms and cost more money, as I said there is only one price for these rooms, they are junior suites and they are all exactly the same. We had asked to face the centre of the hotel which has the garden and fountain view, that is the only difference. Fortunately we had taken all of our paperwork with us and so could show them how much we paid for the room, in January this year Riu drastically reduced the price of their rooms in their hotels for May so that they could fill the hotels up as they are otherwise only half full at this time, we know this because we always go at this time for that reason. This meant that they had overbooked and so were putting guests where they could and some were having to go to another hotel because there was no room for them. This was confirmed by our Thomson rep. As we could show them what we paid for our holiday after a lot of unpleasant arguing they agreed to put us where we wanted the next day. There were four other Thomson holidaymakers with the same problem, and we later found out that some American guests had the same problem. I feel that this is very shady practice by Riu, to leave it until you get there and then drop the bombshell on you. I would strongly suggest that you take all paperwork with you as we did, at least you have proof of what you are saying. Incidentally, if you are with Thomsons, you can not get onto any of the Thomson or First choice web sites from there, for some reason they are all blocked, so print off your holiday details before you go. I found that I was slipping around on some of the floor surfaces, and yes this was before any alcohol, mainly around the dining room area. The floors are all tiled and it appears that they are only washed with water and no detergent and so get greasy, especially when they are damp. I noticed a lot of the other guests were also slipping on the same surfaces and I said to my wife that someone was going to have a nasty accident, and sure enough someone did, a poor lady slipped over onto her face and smashed her front teeth up very badly and landed up in hospital over night with a bill in the thousands of pounds, so be careful and try to wear shoes with plenty of grip. A word to the wise, our travel agents, Thomsons were telling people that they needed to change their money to Paso’s, This is not true, everywhere accepts American Dollars and in fact they will only accept dollars to get into and out of the country, some people were trying to pay with Paso’s at the airport and were being made to change their money into American Dollars. That is $10 to get into the country and $20 to get out at the end of the holiday, also have the exact amount as they will not give change. The Riu Palace Punta Cana is a lovely hotel and is well kept with wonderful friendly staff, except for some of the receptionists. Management need to get their act together as they are the only ones letting it down. They need to be more honest with their guests or they will lose them.

We stayed for a week 10-17th may. Hotel was amazing, service was pure class, can get noisy by the pool so if you prefer quiet then there are sunbeds further away from the immediate poolside. Food was ok, definitely recommend the steakhouse and Brazilian. Buffet was bearable for a week. Fresh smoothies for breakfast was lovely, Los to choose from. Entertainment team were great during the day, evening entertainment was not great but the holiday didn't revolve around that. Met lots of amazing people there so was kept entertained by them, beach was stunning. 2.5 miles walk to the shopping huts on the beach. Haggle! drinks at hotel were awesome, wine was nice, cocktails were lethal, if u want to get drunk, try mama juana! rooms do have that musty smell but you won't notice it after 20 mins, leave air con on when ur out. Esther at reception was lovely, as we're Samuel and victor at pool bar. Trip to seona island was out of this world. Book with scuba caribe and haggle. We paid $55 each. With Thomson it was $169 each! Exactly same trip. YOU DON'T NEED PESOS just dollars. Tipping is worth it. We tipped $5 to pool guy to save our sunbeds each day so no 6am wake up call but they are still pretty empty by 8am anyway. Gift shops are expensive wherever you go so be prepared. AND FINALLY ENJOY UR HOLIDAY AND STOP READING BAD REVIEWS!!!!!

We have been to Dom Rep many times and stayed in 5 star hotels , and to this resort 4 times The Riu Palace is by far the best we have stayed . The food is good the beach is lovely. the service is second to none. we had no problem booking the specialty s. the steake house was the best I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The only down side is that the rooms smell a bit musty even though they are clean This didn't spoil our holiday too much though.

Booked this resort (after staying at the Riu Palace Aruba a few years ago) 4 months in advance and got a great deal. Stayed 5/12-5/17. The hotel itself was visually appealing, didn't notice any mold as mentioned in other reviews. Arrived prior to room being ready and were given bracelets immediately. Room was ok, we did have the "2 beds pushed together", not a big deal to us. Everything worked, was clean, and overall satisfactory. Maid service everyday, as was the mini bar restocked. The beach is fantastic. No problems getting chairs and they were quite full. Same goes for the pool. Service was excellent. Waiters around the beach and pool all day everyday with trays of various drinks, or would bring you whatever you wanted. The alcohol besides lobby bar is bottom shelf, just ask for the Stoli (which they have everywhere). Breakfast and lunch at main buffet were good, dinner at buffet and specialty restaurants were hit or miss- if you're picky stick to the buffet. Waiters in restaurants were friendly and did a good job. All in all we had a good time and would recommend this hotel to others for the overall value, beautiful beach/ocean, friendly and attentive staff, and cleanliness.
