"Nice place to stay"

4.0/5

Thu, May 23, 2013 Vancouver

I wanted to make this a quick review as you get a good feeling of the pros & cons from everyone elses reviews. This was my 5th trip to PV and 2nd time at the Riu. Is this a true 5 star...probably not. I have had friends that stayed at those places and this does not compare to the service or perks they had. Is it a fun and great place to stay...I would say so. We are pretty easy going, looking for a clean place, decent food and a fun time. I would say out of the other places I've stayed (Samba & Friendly Hola) this one has the best food. It is true that there is no bar service, but I don't mind getting up to get a drink, where the smaller resorts I stayed before had more of that service. The busier the resort is, the more "extras" that happen throughout the day, but also the more crowded it feels. I think if you are not overly expecting you will have a great time. We went for 2 weeks and really enjoyed are time and we don't get hung up over the small stuff. If you are looking for a snobby 5 star environment, this place is not for you.

"Well worth what we paid!"

We really brainstormed to find things bad with this resort. -There is only 1 set of elevators. Kindof inconvenient after a long day on the beach to walk all the way to the lobby, to walk all the way back when you are on the 6th floor closest to the beach! (Harldy worth complaining about it though, the excercise was good for us!) -The food in the buffet got kindof tiring after eating it every day. They could use more of a selection! The food they did serve was good though. If you go to the 4 a la cartes, you would only have to eat it 3 days, so again, harldy worth complaining about! -The water pressure was decent in the showers, but the temp wasnt consistant. We played with it though and figured out how to make it work for us. Again, not worthy of complaining! -The hotel was bombarded with locals! (There was a kids soccer tournament going on in town) So many kids...and they were rude! Take the ice cream scoop right out of your hand kind of rude! I would never again travel there knowing that amount of kids would be there. But, totally not the resorts fault! The concierge service was great to us. (Calling us taxis, bringing our bags etc) The front desk was great. Helped with every question / request. Buffet staff was amazing! I have waitressed before, I know what serving a bunch of screaming, messy, demanding kids is like! They handled it brilliantly, and kept the smiles on their faces! Bar staff was awesome! kept the drinks filled, and offered suggestions for something different. 2 thumbs up for them! The grounds were beautiful. The beach was beautiful. It was a good distance to town and the airport. The entertainment was great. The rooms were clean. Nothing was stolen from us....but nothing was left out of the safe either. All in all, this was a great resort. We have stayed in better, and worse (much worse!) For the amount of money this trip cost us, it was awesome!

"Okay facility, not great food and theft issues."

The hotel and facilities were okay, food wasn't good and we had a couple things stolen from our room. To be generous, I will start with the good. The location is good, not too far from the airport and Puerto Vallarta. It has a nice stretch of beach and decent layout with pools and other amenities. I found the staff in the bars and restaurants very responsive and nice. The food was not very good. I have read some reviews that have said the food was good and don't know what their standards are. A lot of people are saying that's the type of food they expected for the star rating. I choose to judge it on the basis of if the food was good or not. For the most part, the food was not good. There was little selection. Most of the dishes were repeated in the buffet day after day. The dishes were either bland, soggy or over salted. The website advertises all night snacks and room service. The only food after 10:30 pm is a fridge with hot dogs and hamburgers or 7-11 style nachos. Also, the food in the reservation restaurants wasn't very good either. The only things that were dependable were fruit, vegetables and bread. Also, the drinks weren't great. The beer in the bars was all on tap and wasn't great. There was a lighter ale and an amber. The amber was much better. The beer in the room was four cans of Tecate, which is okay. The alcohol in rooms wasn't great. No name rum, vodka, gin and Jose Cuervo. Again, I would have liked better drinks. Most tropical drinks used the same slurpee type ice mix which was syrupy and sweet. On a good note the mojitos were pretty good. As for the theft. I was rushing to the bank one day to deposit US dollars and also had $200 Canadian dollars. It seemed like a good idea to leave the $200 in the room because I was already carrying $800 American to deposit. In a hurry, I just tucked the $200 in my suitcase under my clothes. When I came back, $100 Canadian was missing and $13 American from my the pocket of one of my pairs of pants. I didn't bother reporting anything because I didn't put it in the safe. Also, the day before we left my friend had his camera stolen from our room. We filled out a report and of course nothing was done. My friend requested a copy of the report to see if he could claim it on his insurance. They wouldn't even give us a copy because they said it was internal. If we wanted a report we would have to go to the police station and file our own police report and get a copy of that. I had mentioned that the servers and bartenders were great but the front desk and hotel concierges were not very helpful. Tour operators had their own concierges who seemed great. However, the actual hotel concierges were useless. They weren't rude or anything but just made any excuse not to help. Overall, I would not go back to the Riu Jalisco or any Riu property. I would most likely rent a condo or apartment independently or spend extra money on a nicer resort. If you are young and want to drink and party at a beach resort or a family with younger kids who just want a pool, beach and easy food options, this might be a good choice. Just put everything in the safe and don't expect anything extra.

Let me start by saying that you should be aware that this is not a 5 star hotel. As long as you go there knowing that, you should be ok. We are use to going to Dreams, Majestic, and Real resorts and this is NOT anything like them. (I am not sure sure if this is the same as all RIU hotels, but definetly not Jalisco) Some of the key differences that I found between the usual resorts that we go to and here: No beach or pool service, I had to get off my behind and fetch a drink. Some top shelf liqour is available if you ask. Food was OK. Buffet had a bit of everything, but only about a 3rd of the size as the other resorts. Get to the buffets early to avoid mega crowds and availabilty of food. Speciality restaurants were more of an assembly line that anything. What I mean by that is, everyone sat down, they would take your order for the main course and then 50X course 1 would come (salad) 50X course 2 would come(another appie), ect ect. If I could say one thing I would rate bad would be their coffee at the buffet. It was probably the worst I have had in my life. If you go the bar and ask for a cappucino, they are really good. take to the buffet with you. The grounds were nice, but I noticed that the tree trimming was starting to fall behind. (dead branches on trees ect ect) The rooms were dated and a bit warn but they were clean. Beds were firm and you should bring your own pillow. As for the musty smell others have mentioned. I consider this a "tropical smell" :) I have found a similar smell at all the other hotels. The humidity is through the roof people, get over it. Unless other rooms had a different smell, we didnt notice anything out of the ordinary. Staff were polite, maybe a little less trained or "polished" Locals bombard the hotel starting on Thursday and stay until Sunday. (when I say bombard, I would say 4:1 locals:non-locals) and they seem to take over the resort...if anything, this was my biggest pet peeve. I went planning on laying by the pool for a week, I achieved that at a reasonable price.

"Theft in Riu Jalisco. PV"

We had no complaints about this Hotel, it was great for the price and the food was excellent. However, seems like there was an inside job going on with breaking into the rooms safes. We happened to be one of the victims. We stayed there from April 14-28th 2013. We had left a considerable amount of cash in our room safe (over 600.00). A few days before our departure we found our safe open and all our cash gone. This was NOT a forced entry. We know it was not our regular maid for many reasons so we are not sure if that was the person. We also talked to someone else in the Hotel and they also lost 350.00 on the same day. These were both locked safes with no forced entry. Hotel offered nothing to try and compensate for our loss.
